Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge named AFL’s toughest player and best leader

LEADERSHIP and toughness go hand-in-hand in the AFL.

That’s according to footy fans who believe Hawthorn skipper Luke Hodge is not only the best leader in the competition, but is also its toughest player.

More than 30 per cent of fans who voted in the AFL Footy Fans Survey declare Hodge, who is roundly lauded for his hard-nut approach, the best leader of the 18 clubs, with Geelong’s Joel Selwood in second with over 12 per cent.

St Kilda veteran Nick Riewoldt was deemed the competition’s third-best leader, with 10.54 per cent of the vote with Docker Matthew Pavlich and Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury following soon after.

Hodge — who claimed last season’s AFLPA award as best captain — and Selwood went a close one-two in the toughest stakes, with the Hawks captain backing up last year’s survey title with another win.

In contrast, it was the skippers whose teams have found themselves in times of crisis this year that failed to win fans over with their leadership.

Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett, who has missed an extended period due to a shoulder injury, won just 1.47 per cent of the vote in the survey, with the Suns battling cultural challenges and, more recently, illicit drugs dramas.

But it’s Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy who earned the lowest number of votes after leading the Blues’ dismal start to the season that culminated in Mick Malthouse’s sacking as coach in May.

He has held the post since 2013, but just 0.53 per cent of fans believe he’s the best leader in the AFL.

Essendon, which has endured another season with a performance-enhancing drug cloud over it with WADA’s appeal ongoing, has been led throughout the lengthy process by Jobe Watson, who has struggled to win over fans this season.

Just 5.53 per cent believe Watson — who played his 200th game for the Bombers yesterday — is the best leader in the competition.

Meanwhile, Hodge’s coach Alastair Clarkson was overwhelmingly elected as the competition’s best, winning 44.48 per cent of votes.

Imagine how much further in front he'd be if people were more objective and didn't just vote for their teams nominee. Murphy pls.

I never knew that watching a replay of a team that wasn't Hawthorn smashing another team in a completely one-sided no-contest could be so enjoyable.

Even more-so, when they periodically cut to an image of the coach of the losing team sitting with his arms crossed in the box.

I don't know why I'm enjoying this so much. Anyone have any idea?

afl's top 10 moments of the round has clokes goal at 6....when he put the dont argue that was HIGH on duryea yet was still a top 10 and no mention of sucklings massive goal in the fourth
That goal robbed us of all our momentum. We'd kicked the last 3 and Collingwood were starting to drop their heads. Then Cloke kicked that and their intensity immediately returned.

At least Cameron Bruce features in highlight #5 (listen carefully ;))

Ceglar missed a very gettable one just prior to that also, we were all over them at that stage and if Ceglar has kicked that I felt we may have been able to break the game open, we got to that point a few time during the night where we just needed one more goal and it could have been flood gates but they always managed to stay within 2-3 goals of us.

Shitty according to you. Just echoing the realities of the corporate world we live in. Have the right to defend my statements.

An example of a perspective is, f uck that a-hole who destroyed a family and turned the world on its head. We will keep going and grieve by moving on. No "perspective" is right or wrong.

KOLOKOTRONIS

No but some are extremely callous.

Don't really rate him that high but he does provide Sydney with a lot of run and carry which is one of their biggest weaknesses. Shut down Jetta and there's not much left in that area for them.

Who's Hodge going to look to for goal-assists now?

In all seriousness, I thought he played really well against us earlier this year, and will be a big loss for them. We just need to poleaxe Hannerbury like the GF at any opportunity.

Yep and add Parker to that list. Those two are their keys.
