That's great. What's your view on Reece Mckenzie? - I have a saints supporter going nuts over him, and now Knightmare has joined the bandwagon.

I really value your opinion and would like to know your assessment if him.

Shot up the ranking this year. I havent seen a lot of him but will certainly take a look at some of his highlights. I'd say his at best he is an early second round prospect with a selection later in the second or third round more likely.

Josh Mahoney has stated that we have narrowed our choices down to 4.

Petracca
Brayshaw
McCartin
Wright

Most likely going to end up Brayshaw and McCartin.

I did read that Melbourne had narrowed it down which makes it seem more likely it will be Brayshaw/ McCartin combo but i still believe Lever is a chance at # 3. Also threw his name up there to be a little bit different to the standard Petracca, Brayshaw, McCartin which we have seen a lot of in the mock drafts.

As talented as McCartin is and he plays his role of power forward SO well I'm afraid that his not versatile enough in his position. I don't think his going to be a midfielder and hasn't done much, if anything in defence. Seems to me like he is being pigeon holed as a power forward which will see him slide possibly even further than GWS's # 6. Could be the Peter Wright player that goes outside the top 10 if GWS decide on a tall defensive option over McCartin

I still don't understand why everybody expects Melbourne to go with McCartin ahead of Wright. Wright fits the team much better as McCartin is very similar to Hogan and not as good as him either.

This ^. That's why I see Lever over McCartin as being a genuine shot at selection 3 as well. Wright is obviously a similar player in size to players like Jack Fitzpatrick and Max Gawn for instance also.

Wright will be better than Fitzpatrick and Gawn will be the #1 ruck. I have:

1. Petracca
2. Brayshaw
3. Wright
4. Lever
5. McCartin
6. Laverde
7. Duggan
8. Weller
9. Moore
10. Goddard

Certainly agree that Wright will be a better player than Fitzpatrick and Gawn. Should have mentioned that in my post.As for your top 10 names wise we are pretty similar. Few changes in selection position etc.

Interested in your thoughts on Goddard at 10 and do you see that as a locked in call if available. I've gone with Paul Ahern as a positional replacement for Varcoe and Christensen but picking Goddard would also be advantageous for the Cats considering Lonergan, Taylor, Mackie and Rivers are all either over or nearing 30.

Yeah, that's basically why. After that I see West Coast taking Pickett, Richmond taking Ahern, Fremantle taking Durdin, Adelaide taking Marchbank, Gold Coast Langford (although I can see him going as high as 7), North and Essendon splitting De Goey and Cockatoo, Carlton somebody like Ellis and Essendon somebody like Keitel.

Will hopefully get an updated mock draft before the week is out. Depends what Carlton's needs are really. They've added a young inside mid in Whiley during the trade period along with two talls in Jaksch and Jones. Maybe looking at an outside player with clean ball use like Corey Ellis?
We might take Marchbank if he slides. :D

“It just depends whose there, it’s too hard to predict. We have a feeling the talls will be gone by then.” Andrew McKay.

Gut feel says Maynard could go to Carlton at 28. Favour bulls and hard players over the likes of Garlett. Sydney had a shocker in the GF and lacked a crumber, but they still have this list breakdown with mids-forwards such as Parker, Kennedy. etc.

Would be a waste of a pick IMO. I have no doubt that Marchback will be a good intercept 3rd tall defender, but you guys don't need that at the moment. Even though Tutt is coming in, outside class is still the #1 priority. Ellis would be the perfect pick at 19, McLean/Garlett/Cavka/Menadue at 28 and Jackson/Nielsen/McLaren/CBS at 61. ROUND 1

The first pick of the draft seemed a lock until 24 - 48 hours ago when McCartin has bolted up the mock draft boards again like a Matt Priddis Brownlow Medal.

I'm one of the phantom draft writers who has changed there pick. I see St. Kilda going for the Riewoldt succession plan in McCartin over the Hayes succession plan in Petracca. To be honest I've found it hard to split them for some time but felt that where St. Kilda was going would see them select Petracca.

How that opinion has changed!!!

Pick 1: ST KILDA - Patrick McCartin, 194 - 94, POWER FORWARD

For the first part of the year he was the name most heavily linked to the number one pick but the development of Petracca saw McCartin slide to what was a likely pick 3. I had him with a draft range of 1 - 13, with the club most likely to draft him being the Suns at selection 8.

Either McCartin or Petracca are capable of being the first pick in the draft and neither would be overawed with the potential pressure that comes there way.

There is no other power forward like McCartin in the draft which is why the Saints are considering him more and more as part of it's post Nick Riewoldt succession plan. He plays the role of "go to forward" very well and IMO would be developed as a Full Forward. My main area of concern in his game is his fitness levels and the lack of flexibility in his game. I can't see him being a midfielder and hasn't been tested as a tall defender.

Who else is in the mix: Christian Petracca.

Pick 2: MELBOURNE - Christian Petracca, 186 - 92, MID / FWD

The most likely number one pick in my opinion for a while until the last 24 - 48 hours.

Paul Roos has spent a lot of time investing into the Melbourne midfield and with Petracca and Brayshaw both potentially available they would be cheering all the way out of the Convention Centre if they nab those two players.

Endurance was the biggest question mark over Petracca earlier this year but he has pushed through it and can now work for extended periods through the middle. Beast of a player in the contest with his powerful body and a damaging player when resting inside 50. There’s some definite similarities to Dustin Martin in him.

Like Angus Brayshaw he’d slot in nicely into the building Demons midfield.

Who else is in the mix: Patrick McCartin, Angus Brayshaw.

Pick 3: MELBOURNE - Angus Brayshaw, 187 - 86, INSIDE MID

With 2 live picks in the top 3 at least one or both of them needs to be used on a midfielder IMO.

Brayshaw like Petracca is a strong and competitive midfielder on the inside who will gave more depth in the midfield for Melbourne. Can switch to an outside midfielder role as well but like Oliver Wines who he shares similar playing traits with is a contested specialist and will add to an area that Melbourne have invested heavily into since the Paul Roos era began by trading and drafting players in.

Can't see Melbourne passing on Brayshaw by. The only other option here for me would be Jake Lever as a tall defensive option.

Who else is in the mix: Jake Lever.

Pick 4: GWS - Jarrod Pickett, 177 - 74, MID UTILITY

GWS are into Pickett big time. There's some areas to address in the midfield for GWS and they went part way to addressing it with adding an experienced midfielder in Ryan Griffen during the trade period. Griffen gives the midfield extra size and strength and most importantly experience.

Another need they have is for pace out of the contest which a player likes Pickett brings in spades. His pace out of the contest is the x factor he brings to his chosen team and you can tell that he wants to play attacking at any opportunity like his player comparison Lewis Jetta. Has that speed outside the contest and uses the ball well but is just as capable of bursting through congestion.

Think the Giants may need to pull the trigger at 4 because Collingwood would seriously consider Pickett with there pick 5 than take a chance that the taller players they want with selection 6 and 7 are available which is highly likely.

Who else is in the mix:
Jayden Laverde, Paul Ahern, Liam Duggan, Jordan De Goey.

Pick 5: COLLINGWOOD - Jayden Laverde, 189 - 82, MID UTILITY

In the knowledge that Darcy Moore is already going to Collingwood I can see them going for a midfielder here. The temptation would be to select Patrick McCartin and build a formidable CHF/ FF combination with Darcy Moore post Travis Cloke but I think as a needs based pick the midfield in Laverde (or another mid) are a better selection.

If Brisbane still held pick 5 there would be no doubt at all in Patrick McCartin going at 5 IMO but the Magpies traded early into the draft after losing Dayne Beams to Brisbane. In Jack Crisp and Levi Greenwood they have traded in solid bodied midfielders who (in particular Greenwood) like Beams can impact in the midfield but a player like Jayden Laverde should be too good to pass on. Has the attributes that recruiters want in midfielders these days akin to Marcus Bontempelli from the 2013 draft and Laverde’s new possible captain Scott Pendlebury. The greater consistency in his game will come

Another player who has been talked up at pick 5 more recently is Kyle Langford. Would be a definite bolter if he goes here but I can see why the Magpies would be interested.

Who else is in the mix: Kyle Langford, Jarrod Pickett.

Pick 6: GWS -

Peter Wright, 203 - 102, KPF/ RUCK

2 metre Peter as he has become known is one of a number of players from this draft crop who have been mentioned as a number one pick over the years.

With 3 live picks inside the first 7, a team having lost 2 giants in Tom Boyd and Jon Giles via trade and in the knowledge that Jon Patton is recovering from a knee reco, they need to go tall early. Whether it is indeed Wright or Patrick McCartin we will see in the next 48 - 72 hours.

What I like about Wright's game is the flexibility in his role. I see him best used as a KPF like Kurt Tippett but is more than capable of playing as a second/ relief ruckman and his skills at ground level for a big man stand out.

Who else is in the mix: Jake Lever, Jayden Laverde, Jarrod Pickett.

Pick 7: GWS - Hugh Goddard, 196 - 94, KPP (better used down back IMO)

GWS lost Kristin Jaksch during the trade period who was being groomed as a potential tall defender but gained Joel Patfull from BL to use a mid/ tall defender. Sam Durdin and possibly Jake Lever definitely in the mix here as well but Goddard offers a bit more for me than Durdin does and is already physically ready to play AFL where it can be argued that Durdin needs to bulk up.

It’s hard to predict where Goddard will land. His best football is hard to beat and is another one of the draft pool to have been thrown around as a number one draft pick even though it was years back. Didn’t have the best Championships which is when draftees are often most harshly rated and the spotlight is on the most. Because of this his draft range has compromised and is now being considered more as a 11 – 20 option than a 1 – 10.

For a bigger bodied player he is agile, athletic and quick off the mark, further proof of his ability to play well at either end of the ground. As a defender which I feel is his most effective position he holds front position against his opponent well, competes hard at ground level and possesses a long left foot kick which he uses effectively off HB, likened to Harry Taylor who he models his defensive game on.

Who else is in the mix:
Jake Lever, Sam Durdin, Jarrod Pickett, Liam Duggan, Paul Ahern.

Pick 8: GOLD COAST - LIAM DUGGAN, 183 - 75, DEF / MID

They would love a midfielder with pace here like a Jarrod Pickett. It wouldn't be hard to settle with a midfielder like Liam Duggan or local product Lachlan Weller but.

Duggan is the type of player that the Suns could use very effectively in a HB/ Wing role like Carlton have used Kade Simpson. If Duggan is unavailable which needs to be considered because GWS are into him at pick 7 than Jarrod Pickett seems the stand out plan B option.

Duggan’s talents off field as well as on field were noticed significantly by AIS managers who have a massive rap for him. Endurance runner which leads to think that a role on an outside wing or HB would be ideal but Duggan has worked strongly on his inside game as well.

Kyle Langford and Paul Ahern are both viable midfield/ forward players an area where extra depth would be handy.

Who else is in the mix: Jarrod Pickett, Lachlan Weller, Paul Ahern, Kyle Langford.

Pick 9: COLLINGWOOD (F/S) - Darcy Moore, 199 - 93, KPP

As a father son pick the Magpies would have watched and kept tabs on Darcy Moore growing up. Their hand was forced during the father - son bidding period after the Western Bulldogs put a bid of their first selection for Moore which Collingwood had to match which I think they always knew they’d have to do.

At pick 9, like Henney to Sydney @ 18, Moore is a steal for the Pies and will become a key part of the Magpies spine in the future. Whether that's as a forward or defender time will tell but he has shown definite talent at both ends of the ground.

Moore has already spent time at Collingwood and played matches for them during the 2014 VFL season as a 23rd man, an initiative put in place by the VFL to assist the development of TAC Cup players who are in the mix to be drafted. Massive upside with him and with his similar size and versatility can be likened to Essendon’s Jake Carlisle.

Who else is in the mix: PICK 9 – FATHER / SON SELECTION.

Pick 10: GEELONG – Sam Durdin, 197 - 87, KPP (MORE SUITED TO DEFENCE)

I’ve rated Durdin’s work higher than others and think he could realistically go as early as the pick 4 – 7 bracket for GWS. More of a defender that can go forward than a forward who can go back in my opinion but the way he plays as a forward is natural. Takes a strong mark, contested and uncontested, and always looks to mark the ball at its highest point making it harder for his opponent to spoil. As a KPP swingman he is most likened to Collingwood’s Ben Reid.

Before the trade period I was fairly sure Geelong would go with a tall defender like Hugh Goddard, Sam Durdin or Jake Lever and develop them as KPD's. The reason being that Harry Taylor, Tom Lonergan, Jared Rivers and Andrew Mackie (can add Corey Enright but he is more a small/ mid sized back) are all 29 or older during season 2015. 4 experienced players with premiership medals (all except Lonergan are dual premiership) and the experienced Rivers. After Enright and Kelly they are a bit light on in term of small to medium defenders also.

However the Cats lost experienced midfield/ fwd players in Allen Christensen and Travis Varcoe to trades which made me re think my thoughts on where there needs are. Pace that breaks lines open and ability to find the goals or continue down the tall defensive path.

At the end I've gone for Durdin to shore up the KPD stocks and look for a smaller midfielder/ forward later in the draft.

Who else is in the mix: Jake Lever, Paul Ahern, Lachlan Weller, Jordan De Goey.

Pick 11: WEST COAST– Lachlan Weller, 181 - 74, MIDFIELDER

What I’d like to see the club do is address a need in the midfield. Outside speed and quality ball use is something that has lacked in our midfield and it’s encouraging that the club sees this as a deficiency that needs action also.

The ideal selection for pick 11 would be local boy Jarrod Pickett but the chances that he won’t be available are increasing daily with GWS and Gold Coast both interested. If Pickett isn’t available I see players like Weller, Paul Ahern and Jordan De Goey as practical options also. Jarrod Garlett and Nakia Cockatoo are practical options as bolters.

Weller like Pickett if available just ticks every box for me. He just attracts the ball inside and outside the contest, and uses it cleanly when he gets it while his transition running especially on the wider home ground will work in our favour as well. Terrifiic balance in his game between getting back to help out the defenders, working hard in the midfield and adding real quality finishing touch in front of goal.

Who else is in the mix: Paul Ahern, Jarrod Garlett, Nakia Cockatoo.

Pick 12: RICHMOND– Paul Ahern, 181 - 77, MID/ FWD

Criticised over the trade period for their lack of player movement (one addition, Taylor Hunt) apart from the de listings and retirements of Jake King and Daniel Jackson I think it was always Richmond’s intention to set themselves up with a good first round draft pick to nab a talented midfielder.

What you get from Ahern in quality. A lot like a young Daisy Thomas in the way he plays he can flash in and out of games but has exceptional running endurance and balance in his game and when he gets the ball he uses it especially well. As a small forward can make the difficult look easy, and is dangerous around goal highlighted by his game against WA at the National Carnival. Good mix of inside and outside work in his game but at least initially at his chosen his skill set would be suited to an outside midfielder/ small forward role.

Pick 13: FREMANTLE – Jake Lever, 193 - 84, TALL DEFENDER

Lever is the main player of the my past top 10's that suffered most from McCartin switching from pick 8 to pick 1.

Like Richmond the Dockers were fairly inactive during the trade period. They have looked to build strength in numbers in key position stocks in most recent drafts with players like Michael Apeness, Matt Taberner, Jack Hannath, Tanner Smith, Alex Pearce etc. and i can see the Dockers going that way again early in the draft with either of Lever, Sam Durdin or Caleb Marchbank. Otherwise Hugh Goddard if available is in the mix you’d suspect.

If they weren’t to go for a tall option they may look to add some depth to there small/ medium sized defender numbers with a Liam Duggan or Corey Ellis but I can’t see them not going tall.

Who else is in the mix: Hugh Goddard, Sam Durdin, Caleb Marchbank, Tom Lamb, Jarrod Garlett.

Pick 14: ADELAIDE –Jordan De Goey, 187 - 82, MIDFIELD UTILITY

De Goey is a player that is a bit unique in the draft mix who plays with a mix of the versatility of Nathan Fyfe and the inside aggression of Jack Ziebell

The ideal situation for Adelaide is that Sam Durdin is available for them to add depth to their KPD stocks which have been shortened since Rutten’s retirement, Otten’s ACL injury and the uncertainty over Sam Shaw.

If Durdin isn’t available which needs to be taken into account there will be the possibility of Jake Lever or Hugh Goddard otherwise Caleb Marchbank is likely to be available. The question will remain do they pull the trigger on Marchbank or go with one of the definite first round talent still available and wait till the second or third round to draft a KPD like Keenan Ramsey.

My opinion is they hold off on Marchbank and go for Jordan De Goey. JDG has a real presence to his game likened to Jazk Ziebell in the way he plays in a contested situation. Matches the prototype midfielder that recruiters often chase these days and has a real presence with his height and aggressive play. Is clean with his hands and by foot and you can tell he is a player that wants to influence the game and take it on.

That presence for a midfield that should be looking to phase out Scott Thompson and the uncertainty over Patrick Dangerfield’s future means that De Goey becomes a real required player.

Who else is in the mix: Sam Durdin, Caleb Marchbank, Jake Lever, Paul Ahern, Tom Lamb.

Pick 15: GOLD COAST – Kyle Langford, 190 - 73, FWD/ MID

After nabbing a midfielder with speed and quality ball use early I don’t think they’d be upset with the versatile Kyle Langford at 15 to add to their medium sized forward/ midfielder stocks. Something that they do lack on the list is a taller midfielder so Langford could be that man for Rodney Eade’s men.

The ideal situation for the Suns is that local product Lachlan Weller is available for them at pick 15 but if they want Weller they may need to use selection 8.

If Weller isn’t available which needs to be taken into account there is the probability that one if not all of Langford, Jarrod Garlett, Nakia Cockatoo and Corey Ellis will be available.

Like De Goey, Langford is another prototype midfielder (a lot like Bontempelli from 2013) who has been strongly linked to Collingwood at pick 5. At his best he plays off a HFF, using his tank to lead high up the ground and trying to model his athletic forward game on Hawks forward Jack Gunston.

Who else is in the mix: Jarrod Garlett, Nakia Cockatoo, Corey Ellis, Tom Lamb.

Pick 16: NORTH MELBOURNE – Jarrod Garlett, 177 - 73, MID / DEF

North will have a decision to make here. Have been linked to both Jordan De Goey and Nakia Cockatoo at selection 16. The tables have turned a bit however and De Goey may not be available. Which leaves North Melbourne with a decision to make of Garlett or Cockatoo. Either way they go there is a possibility they end up getting the player they pass on at pick 25 but that can’t be relied upon.

Cockatoo is a player that trained with North Melbourne during his AIS placement in January, seemed to enjoy his time and from all reports North Melbourne enjoyed having him there and are seriously considering drafting him on Thursday. Whether at pick 16 or if the stars align and he is available at selection 25. Unfortunately Cockatoo didn’t play a lot of footy over 2014 because of injury but he chose to play his best game when it counted most of all. The curtain raiser to the Grand Final with clubs, fans and recruiters watching him no doubt.

Garlett like fellow West Aussie Bradley Hill who has come on quickly at Hawthorn has electric with his speed, clean hands, good lateral movement and clean use of the ball especially at full speed which is a game breaking quality. Doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty in a contest but his best use at least initially will be playing to his strengths as an attacking small forward and outside wingman as he needs to bulk up

Who else is in the mix: Nakia Cockatoo, Corey Ellis, Connor Menadue.

Pick 17: ESSENDON – Nakia Cockatoo, 185 - 86, EXPLOSIVE MID

Essendon’s decision may be based on the picks leading up to 17. I’m assuming they would gladly draft any of the players gone between 14 and 16 but they wouldn’t be upset in securing Nakia Cockatoo either.

Has been injured for the majority of 2014 but put his name back into calculations in the All Stars game which was the curtain raiser to the Grand Final. For a midfielder he is already a solid size, has pace to burn, offers a great deal of flexibility in his playing role, is composed when he gets the ball, has a strong inside ball winning and tackling game mixed with an outside game of speed and quality ball use. With his speed and outside game has been likened to fellow indigenous midfielder Daniel Wells at North.

Who else is in the mix: Jarrod Garlett, Corey Ellis, Tom Lamb, Connor Menadue.

Pick 18: SYDNEY – Issac Heeney, 186 - 82, MIDFIELDER

In an uncompromised draft Heeney wouldn’t have slid any lower than selection 3 or 4 IMO. Like the Magpies with Darcy Moore the Swans first round selection was needed to secure Heeney after Melbourne/ Paul Roos bid on him but I’m sure Sydney expected that a first round selection would be required.

Heeney has been in the Swans system through the Academy for some years now and has been developed nicely for the day when he makes his AFL debut, a lot like David Swallow was developed at the Suns through a year in the VFL. The similarities in early game styles and career paths between Swallow and Heeney are there.

As a midfielder he ticks all the boxes, offensively and defensively and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get an early debut at the Swans but who do you drop out would be the question. Might get a early chance to play that attacking HB role which Malceski owned for the last few years.

In summary the Swans have got an absolute gem here and a draft steal even more so than Moore at pick 9.

Who else is in the mix: PICK 18 – SWANS ACADEMY.

Pick 19: CARLTON – Corey Ellis, 185 - 76, MIDFIELDER

I can see Corey Ellis as a player Carlton would be super keen to get at pick 19. Ellis could go as high as Richmond’s pick 12 if Duggan isn’t available so to get him at 19 could be considered a steal.

Has been on the radar since having a ripping year as a bottom age player and is the type of midfielder who makes things happen. Does the hard things than can go unnoticed because it’s not flashy, just workmanlike. Isn’t a bigger bodied player but slips through congested traffic, and neatly disposes of the ball. When defending he tackles strongly also.

Plays with a good balance of contested and uncontested ball where he sets up the play on his preferred left foot a lot like Andrew Gaff who his game has been compared to.

Who else is in the mix: Tom Lamb, Connor Menadue, Blaine Boekhorst.
