Seems to be some resistance to this idea, but mainly from AFL figures and business.

For a start the AFL are thinking of shifting the GF parade to another location, fearing that the city will be a ghost town and the league will lose millions of $$$. How the AFL lose millions I'm not sure.

Business is concerned about the economic impact, and the cost of penalty rates.

And then Craig Kelly pipes up, primarily it appears because it affects his business, who happen to stage the AFL grand final parade.

So what do you think?

Surely a nation-wide public holiday would be more useful for the actual Grand Final day?

It's our national sport, and this is our national league, why not make sure as many people can watch it as possible, and adequately compensate those forced to work on the day?

I feel the same about 'The Race That Stops the Nation", too, and I'm not even particularly into horse racing. If these events have such national significance today (and I believe they do), then they should be treated appropriately.

Absolutely moronic idea, adds nothing and simply smashes the economy.

It was just something demanded of Andrews by the unions.

I'd swap it for that ******* horse race.

The most stupid idea. As the Opposition have said, what if it's a Swans v Freo grand final? What would Melburnians be celebrating? In fact, apart from the midday parade, GF eve is just another day.

This is a case of a politician coming up with a half baked idea to get himself elected and refusing to admit he didn't think it through. When you're happy to fork out $600M not to build a road, and $400M to compensate a corporate giant dudded out of pokies, what's an estimated loss to businesses of $500M for a public holiday?

If the public holiday was on the day of the event, like the Cup, I'd be all for it. It's culturally significant.

But the day before? Why? It's just senseless.

Andrews was crapping on this morning like it's every kid's dream to go to the grand final parade. Seriously...

And how great it is how they'll be able to go, because mum and dad aren't working. Newsflash Dan, shitloads of industries and businesses still open on public holidays. People will still have to work.

I seriously reckon Dan Andrews does not even know the shape of an Australian football

It's ridiculous. Working on Collins St we'd all pop out at lunch time to see a bit of the parade. A lot of people in the crowd are normally in corporate attire which leads me to believe that most viewers are just opportunistic office workers. If no one in the offices need to be at work then as if they're all going to trek into the city for it.

For all those bitching and moaning about too many public holidays.

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Which-country-has-the-most-public-holidays-30251954.html

Australia really does not have that many public holidays, especially compared to our nearest Asian neighbours.
Economic powerhouses such as China, Hong Hong and South Korea all have more.

Would love to see it become a national holiday just to see the reaction of league and soccer supporters.:D
Yeah but those countries actually do some work on their work days.
