yep looking way too much into the article. That was clearly the best quarter they have played and that should be the standard just like our first half against the cats.

We all remember that shocker of a game last season but was it really an indication of where both lists are at? I sure hope not.

But reading this article there is a hint that they do.

Hope we put them right back into their place at Metricon on July 4th. I have this game pencilled in for a number of reasons. The fact I'm planning to attend it is one of them.

Cant be bothered reading it but the summaries sound the opposite of the thread title - they are only talking about it as significant because they do rate us. I doubt they would bring up a game where they got on top of the Giants, the Demons, the Saints or the Dogs, because it wouldn't mean anything.

They had hyped that game against us as a final (to them) and they for the most part played really aggressively and they probably feel that is their capability when focused.

Problem is footy history is littered with the carcasses of mid season finalists, it doesn't mean a whole lot, they hadn't had a scalp on the road of note and they wanted to get one. Scalps are a thing of teams that are overachieving, to be a good team you have to play well consistently, home and away. When you do that then you will beat good teams, trying to raise the emotional level to win a mid season game is futile, you can't sustain that through an entire season.

I was disappointed with our start, but our bad starts weren't uncommon, I was really disappointed with how the game ended though after we got back into the game. We have too many players who are pretty comfortable that they will get a game the following week irrespective how bad they play and do not show any desperation even when they are not playing well. That has to end.

Yep, we gave them an 8 goal start by choosing not to play contested football. Then we ran them down and would have got over the top except for 3 very poor decisions in Ablett's favour, not to mention the absolute shocker right on 3/4 time where Spud was penalised for shepherding in the marking contest which resulted in a momentum sapping goal.

They played mind games with us before their Metricon win; didn't seem to do them any harm.

My take on it is that Brad would agree with the comments and any reaction wouldn't be in relation to these comments in the press; it'd be about planning to beat a team that is set to make a big impression in coming years. In the early days it seemed to me that we 'benchmarked' ourselves against the likes of Melbourne and Richmond, and seemed to be determined to ensure we established a mental and on-field superiority over them. I'd love for us to include GC in that now too, rather than have them do it to us.

Fair point. I just don't think that clubs and players get intimidated or upset by words, the old 'actions speak louder than words' applying. Australians just don't do trash talk like Yanks, partly because we are crap at it and partly because it fires up rather than intimidates opponents. The old "look at the scoreboard you &#$%&#%% *^&^%" is still the most effective sledge in AFL.

I doubt their mind games had any impact on the Metricon win, as I just see it as part of the pattern of our schizophrenic, Jekyll & Hyde form line with our 'benchmarking' done, and done successfully, with the top 4 sides and our lower intensity against others that led to capitulations against the Suns (and Pies and * and Crows and all those other mid-table teams) and escapes and rubbish wins against the weak sides. I just hope this little comments, which are at the low end of the scale, are used as ammunition next year when we play this smart-ass franchise.

I can't imagine any of our staff talking about any of our wins with that amount of arrogance. "they couldn't touch us".
If that means they rate us, it's a funny way of showing it. I see that as a disrespectful comment, albeit mostly true about first and last quarter of that game.

General Manager of Football Operations Marcus Ashcroft says Prestia was the first casualty.

“Dion has injured his hamstring, he will have a scan later in the week where we will be able to determine the extent of the injury.”
