Analysis Good Bad and Ugly V GWS

I hope you all recognised the lesson you were just given in the difference between young stars, and young battlers.

Shiel and Treloar killed it while Kerridge, Lyons and CEY went missing, and Crouch contributed little in the way of impact or effectiveness despite his possessions.

Greene utterly shredded Brown. A boxing trainer would have thrown in the towel halfway through.

Our injuries, that is all.

Earlier games this year I could excuse the injuries as not really being a factor as they were mostly restricted to fringe or outside 22 players, but in recent weeks they have spread, and spread and spread we weren't really a shot of winning this game unless GWS were off theirs, and they weren't so we didn't. It isn't a matter of gameplan or effort today, it is matter of simply not having enough quality on the ground, and then losing more of it as the game went on.

But we have a top 6 list and the only thing holding us back was Sando?!?!!?!?

GWS went in favourites, had a full squad, were playing at home, and we then copped 2 injuries within the game as well.

If you were to say before the game we'd get done by 4 goals, that'd probably be around the mark.

We clearly have issues, but don't think it's the disaster that it's been made out to be. Biggest shame about the day was we won the match from the 8 minute mark of 1st quarter. Slow start killed us.

Good:
Danger
Mackay
Grigg
Fighting the game out with bugger all rotations
GWS mids running, just outstanding

Bad:
Effing injuries in game
Spanked hard in the middle
Usual players not standing up, can't keep them when we get players back
Forward line structures getting messed about after half time
Jenkins forward line work, possibly better to play him as the roving ruckman...possibly
Cheney, still not sold on him

Ugly:
Outworked by a team on the rise, though most of our speed was in the stands and not on the ground

It's not a disaster, it's a confirmation that none of our young midfielders playing today are good enough to build a midfield around. Not enough talent by some stretch.

Good:
Walker real captains game.
Dangerfield did all he could today. He's a gun. We need to sign him badly.
Crouch plenty of tackles and clearances, in amongst getting the ball.
Jacobs was serviceable around the ground and was pretty good in the ruck against the absolutely monster that is Mumford.
Laird having another great game until he got injured...
Lever still taking the game on, he's a jet.
Eddie!

Bad:
Thompson, may as well not have been out there. Absolutely useless
Kerridge looked lost
Lyons so slow and only got touches once no one could run anymore
Wright. Not sure what he offers?

Ugly:
Injuries
Just how good GWS's list is.

Good -
Dangerfield, Walker. Our young back line holding their own.

Bad -
Most of our Senior players who are supposed to be setting the standard for our young guys to follow. Our first/second year players have nearly past them on recent performances.

Ugly -
Injuries. More bloody injuries.

Good:
Danger
Grigg
Tex, although did go quiet in the third
Dmack
Battled on when players down and undermanned
Betts another 3
Laird

Bad:
Our start
The AFL for gifting the Giants a ridiculous future
Jenkins you soft marshmallow
Low tackle count

Ugly
More injuries

Hate losing but not overly disappointed. Thought we would get towelled up and their start was scary. They are a bloody good team who will be unbelievable.
Our injuries to our running players meant we were even more exposed. We really do need to improve our midfield over the summer with a KPD and KPF a must

Good
Dangerfield really stood up, and while his disposal remains iffy his strength overhead was really on display
Lyons showing something for the first time this year. Really hope he can keep it up
Talia beat Cameron fairly comprehensively
Lever in the first half
Mackay with TWO solid games in a row. Who would have thought?
Eddie and Walker presented well and battled hard.
Very happy Grigg has grabbed his opportunity like this. Almost cemented himself in the team at this point.

Bad
We lost this game in 15 minutes. The start of the 1st and the end of the 3rd. At least we remained competitive.
Van Berlo, Wright, Brown, Kelly, Cameron, Kerridge, Cheney, CEY, and Thommo all struggled.

Ugly

This run with injuries is getting ridiculous
I've always had a soft spot for VB, but it's really getting hard to justify him being in the team

Good:
Tex
Danger
Sauce
Crouch
Grigg
Lever
Laird until injury

Bad: Everyone in defence besides Lever and Laird.
Lyons
Kerridge
NVB
Why is Wright still an AFL player
Thommo wasn't great today

Ugly
Our inability to stop their run
Couldn't hold momentum all game
Tackling. It was one of our worst displays EVER.

This bad...
I missed the first 12 minutes and so did the Crows by the looks of the scoreboard at that time.
After this we slightly out scored them but with the loss of 2 players in the third qtr it was always a tough ask.

What is it with us and our preperation.

Why is it taking so long to get into games?

Our injuries are now taking their toll on our ability to come back from a deficit.
Too many out of form players involved at crucial times. VB and Wright are struggling to contribute but unfortunately we have little choice but to keep selecting them.
Will be interesting to see Walsh's final team for Freo but I fear they will both be in.

The good...

Tex played very well in the first half as did Eddie. Lever was solid in the first half. Talia kept Cameron quiet.
I thought Sauce was good against Mumford although he lost the taps. Should be good practice for next week.

The ugly...

VB trying to chase down Griffen.......

Good:
Danger's marking
Walker for 3 qrts
Lever looked composed
Laird pre-injury
Mackay looked good across half-back
Scoreless last qrt for gws
Eddie still dangerous
Took the game on a little more

Bad:
Our starts
VB - it's a sad sad thing
Our speed in the midfield
Our kick outs

Ugly:

When laird went down (near on best on ground at that point) they kicked 4 quick. We'd already subbed Kerridge. Unfortunately though our slow starts (bad coaching?) came back to bite us and has to be the number one issue out of the game.
