Opinion GOOD FRIDAY FOOTBALL AT ADELAIDE OVAL?

Remove this Banner Ad

With the Roo's looking to grab a unique game on Good Friday and hold centre stage in the AFL world on this particular day, should our Club look at pursuing this option aggressively even if at all?

I think it would be a massive injection of life into the city if it were to be held in the evening around 7ish.

As a club there is just no marquee games available for us and given our "City of Churches" image, holding the game in this state probably would be looked more favorably in the AFL world than in any other city.

I am also not opposed to having a Showdown on this day either.

Thoughts.

It would be awesome, as there is never anything to do on Good Friday. The only problem is that there would literally be nothing open around the ground, as no one is allowed to open that day at all, No Cafe's, Restaurants, Pubs etc, you could only have the game and nothing else.

Would make it a Great Friday!

In biblical times the day ended when the sun had set, so in keeping the day respectful for Christians I think a game in the early evening would be just perfect and allow everyone to spend time with family during the day.

I am not too au fait with the laws and legislation regarding entertainment facilities being open but you would think the government would make an exemption.

I think AO would really dominate the marketplace, this would allow them to grab a slice of the dollars that the surrounding areas in Adelaide would get after every game during the AFL year.

In the space of 3 or 4 posts it's gone from a stand alone game to a night game with pressure to open up trading in the city.

Talk about thin end of the wedge - that's the kind of thinking that gets people right off side IMO.

With that said , I'm not against it but let's keep some perspective

I could be wrong, but I dont think there is any service after 6pm.

Midnight Mass is just Christmas.

I think they have a 5 pm service for Commemoration of the Passion. I used Google it, so I'm not 100% sure what that is.

The NRL schedule two matches every Good Friday to large crowds (for them) 51000 at one match last year. But the AFL say this would interfere with the channel 7 easter appeal? So can't see it happening.

Actually the Greeks have midnight mass during Easter!

We have no game like that, it's a great opportunity..

This is exactly the point I am making, we have no standalone games like this.

I think the Showdown would be the best game suited for our state. It would also mean around 85% (if not more) SA AFL supporters would be happy.

The problem is that selling the game to the government to support is more likely to go ahead if the Power feature in it IMO.

And then get the added benefits of hosting it as another leg up to them.

We should team up with a big Victorian club and have one year fir us, one year for them - back and fourth and then market the hell out of it.

Im not opposed to your idea. If it works, then we shaft the Power- your right fcuk them, fcuk all of them.

You would want one of the giant Vic clubs involved like a Collingwood or Carlton which are both well supported here.

We have to get on the front foot and be the aggressor before they or other clubs do.

The day would be enough to get the excitement levels high. The team wouldn't really matter.

I think its important to get a team that is big.

ex Adelaide V GWS/GCS/Saints/Dogs/Melbourne - boring games and low crowd support. Probably could add a few more clubs to that list too.

We would want a Victorian side for sure but even a Saints, Dogs, Dees would attract a big crowd.

With it being Good Friday, it would allow families to cone over on the Friday to watch the game. People could drive, fly, bus or train it over on the Thursday night and supporters still travel - regardless of form or ladder position.

We should team up with North Melbourne.

Why is that? A game featuring a big Victorian club is more likely to bring people from interstate over to Adelaide.

Its perfect with Vlad resigning and taking his intransigence on Good Friday footy with him, but I doubt we have the personnel or drive up top to make it happen

Actually the Greeks have midnight mass during Easter!

This is both correct and incorrect. On Good Friday, there is mass at 6-9pm. Our midnight mass is on Easter Saturday night/ Sunday morning.

This however, is often completely irrelevant as Greek and Catholic Easters rarely are at the same time.
