Great to see GW have such a big win over such a big rival. They'd been struggling so much over the last couple of years, since joining the Horsham DFL, and this result was not before time!

Per the Stawell-Times News, who are increasingly impressing as a paper who are throwing out the old insularity in favour of a level approach :

Great Western celebrate huge upset over Swifts

The Lions had not beaten the Baggies since joining the league in 1999, but with an 11 goal third quarter, burst open the game to run away 62 point victors.

The Baggies started the game better, booting four goals to nil in the first term, but the Lions clawed their way back in the second term, to trail by nine points at the main change.

Great Western coach, Alistair Giles, pulled off the match winning move when he swung opportunist, Ross Panther, into the goal mouth.

The young goal sneak, who had moved from a forward flank, kicked six goals for the Lions in an astonishing display in the third quarter.

Many could not believe their eyes when Great Western led the Baggies by 52 points leading into the final term and many waited for the Swifts to start a revival.

That revival never came. In fact, the Lions went on to outscore the Swifts in the final term, kicking five goals as the embarrassed Baggies could only manage three.

Bryce Pianta won praise from coach Giles after he kept Swifts superstar, Simon Dunn under wraps, while Shannon Notting also did a good job on Swifts coach, Adam O'Sullivan.

Mark St Clair was razor sharp for the Lions at centre half forward, while Shaun Hurley and Andrew Healey were also influential in the win.

On a day that was hard to find winners for the Baggies, Nick Pickering, Adam O'Sullivan and Ricky Redford tried for four quarters to stop the onslaught.

The Baggies, who were early favourites to win the flag after a good pre-season, now look in deep trouble and will have to work hard to be in the top five come finals time.
