It was sad to me tonight over dinner with a relative (who has been approached to stand for public office previously) that there is one way that Abbott could save his backside, the only problem is that it would require him to make a decision that he is ideologically opposed to. If Abbott were to restrict the review of penalty rates into maybe just retail and maybe hospitality, then he would win back some public support and would show that he is a changed man and listening to what people say. This would definitely make Turnbull and his backers stop and say lets see what he does for a while longer.
It is one thing to stand at a press conference and say you've made some bad calls and you will look to the future and listen to more people when making key decisions, but completely another to throw out one of your own ideological beliefs because you know it just won't be tolerated by the electorate.
Abbott needs to realise that he is ruling for the people who voted for the Liberal Party at the last election, not the people who fund the Liberal Party. Howard at least realised this and that is why he stayed in power for so long, he knew how to tap into what they were thinking and what they wanted to hear, Abbott just doesn't care what the electorate thinks, and even now he doesn't still despite the fact it is clear there is no chance of him winning another election.
