Opinion Have we Forgotten how to Win?

Well since our Loss to the Dogs it seems that we have Forgot how to Win.

We should beaten the Dogs, We where in Postion to beat the Suns but did not get it done and same thing Happened on Sunday vs Crows we had the Lead then they Kicked about 6 in a Row to beat us by 5.

Just seems we forgot how to win?

We're not good enough to finish off matches. The only year i can think of where we consistently finished off matches was 2011.

If you think about it, besides the Essendon and Fremantle smashings, we were in a position to win every game we lost:

Geelong R3: Down by 5 points, minute to go and inside our 50
Adelaide R9: Had our chances game missed easy shots
Bulldogs R13: Down by a point, Kick to Cloke I50 missed the target.
Hawks R14: Crappy umpiring and we had many opportunities (I think white kicked 0.3)
Suns R16: Self explanatory.
Crows R18: Had the lead in the last quarter. Not good enough to finish it off.

So as you can see, If we had the composure to finish off the wins we would be in a much better position. It's not that we have not forgot how to win, i's just the lack of confidence generated for those losses listed above that have destroyed our confidence.

It's a big part of why we're not in the 8,no doubt.

In comparison to 2012:
Beat Essendon by 1 point with a goal with a minute to go
Beat Geelong by 12, level with a minute to go
Beat Adelaide in Adelaide, behind at 3QT
Beat WC by 3, behind late in the game
Beat St Kilda by 6, behind at 3QT
Beat Sydney in Sydney by 8

Those tight wins pretty much got us into the 4 with a 16-6 record. If we dropped a few we may well have finished 13-9 or similar, which is what we're looking at this year.

The polish just isn't there ATM.

We need another player that can stand up when the pressure is on.

This about sums up our position this year. Expecting to win the close ones all the time every year is asking a bit much. The inexperience and the lower quality of the last 7 or 8 players picked is probably all the explanation we need. We have to look to next year, when hopefully the new crop of midfielders will be able to support the established 3 a bit better. This year, they are just not up to it, and Pendlebury can be controlled because there is not enough dangerous backup. Shows how Swan's injuries have been so damaging to the team.

Then why at start of the Season we where 1 of the Top Sides?

Then After RD 12 we have been a bottom 4 Side

We must have remembered against Carlton then immediately forgot again the following week. Unless carlton also forgot how to win too and that game was just random chance!

My head hurts.

Our depth is just too young and inexperienced, that's the problem at the moment.

You look at the top 3 contenders for the flag, and their depth consists of players 23 years and older, they've had their 4-5 years in the system (not always at the current club either) and now they are as good as they are ever going to get.

Compare that to our depth, if you ignore our best 22-25 players who do we have after that? KIDS. Once you get beyond the 27th or 28th ranked player on our list (you are always going to have 2-3 injuries at least) you run into youth, and youth simply can't cover for experience under extreme pressure.

We've had a below average run with injuries this year which has exposed that young depth and that's the reason we have lost so many close games, the effort is there (bar the Freo and recent Bombers debacle) but the group isn't mature enough yet.

We are the second youngest list of the top 10 teams, that says it all.

Well Hawks have Traded players in with there Top Picks so that is No Surprise with them

Dave makes a valid point. Winning tight games, or not losing winnable games, is what the best teams do. Its a combination of on-field leadership, experience, confidence in your team mates, and having enough players who can will themselves to drag us over the line. Its also about the opposition, who drop their heads when a top side surges to the front. Luke Ball made a comment along these lines in early 2012, when we were losing games, after being dominant for much of 2011. I cant recall his exact words, but his meaning I haven't forgotten - it was something like 'we should not get into the habit of losing games'.

It is definitely part of our current problem, but I believe we will get it back, that we have the structures in place to get it back, if unlikely this year then next.

Oh so that's our problem. Can't Buckley just teach them that the aim of the game is to remember how to win?

Their heads are down, even if they won't admit it.

As Lynch said on the weekend when commentating the Suns vs Lions game, the Suns are the perfect example of how much of this game is played between the ears.

We are a top 8 side but we aren't paying like one. I don't know that we've forgotten how to win but for now our confidence is shot. When your team disposal is average you just can't afford that.
