Lance Franklin will have to wait another week to kick his 100th goal in the season - West Coast fans may have to wait a lot longer than that to see their side challenging Hawthorn and the rest of the AFL's elite.

Needing six goals to become the first player in ten years to kick the ton in a home and away season, Franklin - as he always does - had his chances, kicking two goals in the first term, one each in the second and third and having his chances in the last before ending with 4.5.

But with his teammates doing pretty much what they like around him, Franklin did not seem that bothered to end the day two shy of his milestone - while Michael Braun ended his years of service at Subiaco on the end of another hiding in 2008, 19.19 (133) to 9.7 (61).

The result of the clash at Subiaco Oval was considered such a foregone conclusion that Franklin and his efforts were the prime reason for many of the spectators and media attendance.

And so credit Darren Glass for keeping Franklin quiet for long periods - although he will need a lot more help around him in 2009 if he is to lead his side to anywhere near respectability.

With the Eagles still in the game, just, at half time Hawthorn had other worries after Sam Mitchell and Mark Williams both were penalised on field for head high bumps with stray arms - and will both be looked at in more depth on Monday.

But after the Hawks began to play the opponent - rather than to Franklin - after the main break the goals their domination warranted came, as did the 71-point final margin.
In an afternoon all about a West Australian playing for a Victorian club, it was a Victorian with 228 games for the WA side who was eventually feted by the Subiaco fans.

The 2006 premiership player tossed the coin, saw highlights of his career on the big screen and prepared for one last battle.

And his teammates drew first blood, with Mark Seaby marking truly and kicking straight as both sides dropped loose men back.
Campbell Brown was causing havoc in the Eagles forward line, first Beau Wilkes then Quinten Lynch lost their heads inside their own 50m to hand goals to Brown and then Clinton Young.

The lack of Mark LeCras in the Eagles forward line - allowing Tony Notte his first game at Subiaco - was more noticeable as the first quarter wore on.
And so was Franklin, after Glass, and Eric Mackenzie with a forceful shepherd, had done a decent job keeping him quiet early.

A tick over 20 minutes in Franklin rucked his own ball, spun and converted in one movement, and five minutes later Brent Guerra's tackle on Spangher gave him the ball and the chance to find Franklin on the lead, majestic finish from outside 50m.
With the Franklin motor beginning to purr the third should have come in the first term, with a shot 35m out after the siren drifting slightly left.

But after Chance Bateman's crumb established a superiority in the game, Franklin's personal quest was helped by youngster Scott Selwood - whose toe poking the ball away after a free kick to the forward - taking him within three of three figures

While Buddy continued, so did the game, with Ben McKinley's double within three minutes dragging the Eagles closer, Brown replying and then Steven Armstrong continuing his recent good form with a late goal to make the half time deficit 21 points.
After Franklin missed another chance early in the third, McKinley equalised the superstar's scoring on the day with his triple - and continued to be one of the most accurate finisher's in the competition with his 40th of the season.

But Hawthorn only had to do the right things to break down the brittle Eagles, and with the spotlight on Franklin, Mark Williams, Jarryd Roughead and Cameron Stokes all got their first.
As the West Coast resistance ebbed away - Glass excepted - so the Hawks goal column ticked up.

Brad Sewell's great finish was mirrored by Grant Birchall, with seven different goalkickers - none of them called Franklin - finding their range.
Although Quinten Lynch put up his own entry for goal of the day, there was no doubting the man of the moment going into the last.
A bobbling attempt bounced wide in the shadows of the three quarter time - and with the game over, the season over for the

Eagles, and the top four a certainly for the Hawks all external interest now lay with the forward.
As in the rest of Franklin's captivating season, you never know what you were going to get.
Wanting to find their man, but not wanting it to look obvious, the Hawks midfielders almost seemed stuck between two stools - with Franklin's two chances in the quarter both dribbling wide to take his tally to 4.5.

Brown continued to be the other thorn in West Coast's with his fourth, and while Franklin was still willing, Williams' spectacular late mark left his teammate needing a double against Carlton next week to complete three figures.
Braun has no such worries, after being given a guard of honour as he left an AFL ground for the last time.

Franklin, Hodge fire as Hawks down Eagles

Hawthorn's Lance Franklin and West Coast's Eric Mackenzie

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson tried to put the attention on to his team but it was all about that man – Lance Franklin – after his star spearhead made an emphatic return to senior football on Friday.

Playing his first game of the pre-season at Visy Park, Franklin gathered 26 disposals and booted 4.4 to help his side power away from the West Coast Eagles.

The two teams were level for most of the day before ‘Buddy’ helped the Hawks boot 5.5 to 1.0 in the final term as his team ran away to win by 38 points.

Despite some poor kicking from both teams, Hawthorn won what was at times a scrappy affair, 13.21 (99) to 8.13 (61).

“We were pretty pleased with what [Franklin] was able to put out today,” Clarkson said after the match.

“He’s done a lot of training; he hasn’t done a lot of contact work over the summer but he’s been able to do a lot of the running work and in the last three or four weeks he’s built up his body contact.

“So he’s ready to go; he’s fit and hungry and he’s had a good pre-season but he just had less body contact and marking contests in pre-season than what he would have in the last three years, but that’s not such a bad thing.”

While Franklin played almost the full four quarters, Hawks star Luke Hodge also made a successful return.

He gathered 19 possessions in his now-customary role across half back. The Norm Smith medallist, with his right shoulder heavily strapped, did not return after three-quarter time and had ice on his left thigh, but Clarkson said Hodge had only copped a minor knock and his team had got through the clash relatively unscathed.

While Hodge went about his work in usual, mopping-up fashion, Franklin was more conspicuous.

Whenever he got the ball, the small crowd could be heard lifting their voices in anticipation – particularly later in the match as the No.23 began to exert a greater influence.

He showed on several occasions the shoulder and thumb injuries that had hampered his summer were behind him as he took several strong marks and moved with his usual zip.

He also showed little regard for Eagle opponents Mitch Brown and, for the most part, Eric Mackenzie, often playing on and taking on his less experienced rivals.

Franklin finished the day with four goals but also had a hand in at least three others.

Jarryd Roughead also provided a strong target, while at ground level there were no sign of the second-year blues for Cyril Rioli, who pounced on anything loose and looked lively throughout the match.

Brad Sewell was on and off the ground throughout the game but was his usual bullocking self when on the ball. He, along with skipper Sam Mitchell, each had 29 disposals.

Clarkson was also pleased with the performances of youngsters Ryan Schoenmakers, Beau Dowler, Garry Moss, Brendan Whitecross and rookie Riley Milne.

With the Hawks not having any injury concerns from the match, the club will now focus on which players they have to choose from for their round one clash with Geelong.

Clarkson said Trent Croad and Rick Ladson were certain to miss but the door was ajar for an influx of others to push for a recall against the Cats.

“Jordan Lewis will be an outside chance … we’ll need to make an assessment on [Stephen] Gilham,” he said.

“No matter what happens we’ll have a good competitive side that runs out there for round one.”

Dream Team watch – Hawthorn’s Lance Franklin is rated a $428,000 forward in Toyota AFL Dream Team 2009.

FORM

West Coast: LWLW

SUMMARY
Going on last year’s form this one would be a no-brainer. But after watching the first few weeks of the season, it's not as cut and dried as all that. The Hawks, for all their injury troubles, have been disappointing and have managed just the one win. West Coast has chalked up two impressive wins at home but it has been a different story on the road – particularly the thrashing from St Kilda two weeks ago.

A couple of key Hawks have returned from injury but they are still decimated, while West Coast effectively has a full list from which to choose. The Eagles looked like a quality side against the Bulldogs, with Adam Selwood and Daniel Kerr starring in the midfield. David Wirrpanda was excellent down back and Adam Hunter showed his worth up forward.

Hawthorn had very few positives to come from last week’s loss to Port Adelaide apart from Lance Franklin’s most impressive individual performance of the season. Jarryd Roughead was completely ineffective down back while Luke Hodge was another who was outclassed by his opponent.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Brad Sewell (Hawthorn)

He was one of his side’s best players last week, gathering 28 touches and will be required to do more of the same against West Coast’s classy midfield. Will he be chasing his own ball or tagging star Eagle Daniel Kerr?

Dean Cox (West Coast)
Cox is the most imposing match-up for any ruckman with his ability to give his midfield first use and also to run around the ground and gather it himself. Hawthorn has had problems in its ruck department this year, but with Simon Taylor and Robbie Campbell both on board, might be able to nullify Cox.

QUESTION MARKS
Is this a must-win game for Hawthorn? Absolutely. They have only won the one game and will be venturing down to their home away from home in York Park. If they don’t win this week, the injury excuse is not going to fly.

Can West Coast get it together on the road? The Eagles have struggled when they’re outside WA but they are still a team full of talented individuals that can match it with some quality opposition. They need some early goals and then they will be right in the hunt.

WHO WILL WIN AND WHY?
Hawthorn still has the credits in the bank from winning last year’s premiership, but it is perilously close to being in crisis mode if it loses this one. The Eagles have the star power but the Hawks have more accomplished players who can get the job done. This is not an easy one but taking into account the home ground advantage, it’s the Hawks for mine.

PREDICTION:
Hawthorn by 14 points __________________

Hawks fly south, win -Match Report

Jesse Hogan Launceston | April 26, 2009

ADAM Hunter's high mark and long goal at the start of the last quarter should have been a team-lifter for West Coast, as it somehow lifted it above Hawthorn. Instead, that loss of lead was all it took to shake the Hawks out of their mid-game malaise and claim a deserved three-goal win at Aurora Stadium.

Fifth-gamer Garry Moss and key forward Jarryd Roughead claimed their four goals during the Hawks' fierce finish to the match, in which they showed more fluency than in their subdued start to the season.
Most of the forwards' chances came courtesy of rugged midfield duo Jordan Lewis and Brad Sewell, combined with captain Sam Mitchell making the most of his lack of attention in the Hawks' back line to snare 40 possessions.

Chance Bateman's unfamiliar defensive role on Daniel Kerr was also crucial, as the normally damaging Eagles midfielder managed only 10 touches for the match.
West Coast won the toss and kicked with what looked to be a three-goal breeze, but the decision proved to be irrelevant as the wind had disappeared completely by the end of the first quarter. The greasiness was probably exacerbated by the match being played under lights, for the first time for premiership points in the Launceston ground's nine seasons as an AFL venue.

Hawks key forward Roughead had a handful of early opportunities to atone for his dirty day last weekend yet seemed to be enduring the same form, spilling three difficult marking chances in the opening 10 minutes. Evidently, it did not last.
The combination of rain and diligent pressure from both teams produced a very scrappy opening quarter, with Hawks forward Cyril Rioli the only exception with his comparatively assured handling. His skill was not duly rewarded, hitting the post twice from long shots on goal.

Hawthorn's opening goal came from a Lance Franklin set shot, after the spearhead had marked on the lead after a precise pass from an unlikely source: ruckman Brent Renouf.
The Eagles were under intense pressure in the opening quarter until Andrew Embley's hurried shot at goal after 21 minutes levelled the scores. From that point the Hawks' defenders were beset by handling errors — none of which were punished.

Hawthorn's forwards were not so forgiving in the second quarter, in which the Hawks outscored the Eagles three goals to one — with all three due to mistakes on West Coast's last line.
Two of those goals came from Moss after he intelligently lurked in the goal square, capitalising first on a clever handball from teammate Campbell Brown and, second, on an errant handball from West Coast defender Mitch Brown. The other goal was perhaps the most heartening for the Hawks because it came from a crunching chase-and-tackle from Roughead.

Youngster Moss was also making a big influence as part of the trio — Cameron Stokes and, primarily, Bateman were the others.
The fierce attention given by Bateman to Kerr contrasted greatly with the status of Mitchell, who roamed Hawthorn's back line with little attention, evident in him being able to get 21 uncontested possessions in the first half. Mitchell's influence negated the impact of young Eagle Will Schofield's excellent defensive forward job on Luke Hodge, usually the Hawks' premier creator from their back line.

With Kerr quiet and Matthew Priddis not prominent for the Eagles, Hawthorn dominated the centres clearance through rugged midfield duo Lewis and Sewell.
After leading by eight points at half-time and kicking two of the first three goals in the third quarter, Hawthorn's biggest impediment to it kicking away was the biggest — and best — player on the ground: Eagles ruckman Dean
Cox. Despite the Hawks boasting two competing ruckmen — Simon Taylor and Renouf — and a third (Robert Campbell) in defence they were soundly beaten in hit-outs and thrashed in around-the-ground play.

Hawthorn's dominance for much of the third quarter counted for nothing when West Coast snagged two goals in the last five minutes of the term, the second after Lewis' renowned aggression became a liability when he conceded a 50-metre penalty to Priddis.
Hunter's mark-and-goal gave the Eagles a two-point lead before the Hawks kicked five of the last six goals.

Hawthorn's Campbell Brown and West Coast's David Wirrpanda get to know each other on Saturday night

By Nathan Schmook 10:25 PM Sat 27 June, 2009
HAWTHORN'S premiership defence appears in tatters after West Coast turned out a dramatic 20-point win and banished the visitors to the bottom eight at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

Nic Naitanui had a quiet three quarters, but his second game will be remembered for three thrilling fourth-term goals that sealed the game for West Coast and turned the draftee into a hero.

With Hawthorn gripping desperately to a four-point lead in the middle stages of the term, Naitanui smothered Jordan Lewis' clearing effort, baulked around the Hawk and gave West Coast the lead.

He swept on a loose ball in the goal-square minutes later and when he stole another from Tom Murphy in time-on and raced his way into range, the Eagles were 26 points clear and home for their fourth win of the season, 16.11 (107) to 13.9 (87).

The vicious conditions that engulfed the game prompted severe weather warnings, but they weren't enough to alter Hawthorn's short-kicking game plan as it fell on its sword.

Sam Mitchell (40 possessions, 13 clearances and 10 inside 50s) was the standout player on the ground, but when the Hawks needed to use the breeze and build an unassailable lead in the third, they were too precise and pretty, getting themselves just three points clear at the last change.

While Naitanui earned the headlines, the Eagles were well served by an army of their other youngsters.
Second-year players Brad Ebert (24 possessions) and Chris Masten (27) put in polished performances, while Scott and Adam Selwood provided the muscle.

Quinten Lynch stepped in for Dean Cox and led the ruck with 23 hit-outs and 26 touches, while Matt Priddis held the midfield together with 35 possessions.
Brad Sewell (32 possessions) aided Mitchell in the clinches for Hawthorn, while Jarryd Roughead (five goals) made the most of his opportunities.
Lance Franklin booted four goals, but three of those were from the goal square and Eagles defenders Darren Glass and Eric Mackenzie did plenty to hold the star Hawk.

A merciless wind was ripping across Subiaco Oval and favouring the Hawks in the first, but they were unable to take full toll of the advantage in a tight and physical opening.
Roughead got the first goal after Shannon Hurn chose not to rush a behind under pressure, and it was another relatively new rule that gifted the Hawks their second.

First-year Eagle Tom Swift jumped through the interchange gate with Andrew Embley coming off, and Mitchell was awarded the free kick and 50m penalty.
Mark LeCras, who finished with four goals, kicked his first after some brilliant ruck work from Naitanui, and his second levelled the scores.
Glass and Mackenzie were sharing duties on Franklin, and his two easy late goals from the square would have angered both as the Hawks took a 12-point lead into the first break.

Roughead again booted the opener in the second, but, with a stiff breeze at their backs and an inclination to kick long, the Eagles went on to boot six of the next seven goals.
Embley and LeCras pegged back the Hawks' margin and when Mitch Brown booted a spectacular goal from just outside the centre square, scores were level.

To emphasise the value of the breeze, Ebert effortlessly kicked a major from 55m out off a few steps, Tyson Stenglein converted and LeCras sent West Coast into half time 14 points clear.
It didn't last long, however, with the Hawks booting the next four goals as conditions worsened.

Campbell Brown, Michael Osborne and Franklin converted, and the run took place without the influence of Mitchell, who was being held by Daniel Kerr.
Roughead and Franklin had four each late in the term, but a defensive bungle from young Hawk Murphy allowed Kerr to run into an open goal square, leaving the Eagles three points down and sensing a kill.

David Wirrpanda set up a dramatic finale with a quick goal to open the fourth, before Naitanui arrived and gave the Subiaco crowd a night to remember.
