What I can't understand is now most TV stations have on-line viewing to catch up on programs and freeview where you can watch their show.

Not on the ABC which is what I mostly watch. Further, There are ways of editing out advertising so do not see any difference.

The television networks aren't selling a product anymore, the viewer is the product being sold to the advertisers. The content is what they attract the viewers with.

That's the secret. If you remember that you are the product being sold, it all makes sense.
