Disappointing not to win when you go in front twice but in reality very lucky to knick a point.

Gee Novillo is good.

Miller was absolutely taken to bits. Felt for the lad just wasn't up for it.

Koren hopefully gets a few games under his belt.

Zullo good as well

Seems like the Williams/Malik swap is off. Good for both parties.

Geelong heavyweights call for city to become permanent soccer home

GEELONG heavyweights have declared it’s time to throw the A-League expansion strategy out the window and consider the regional behemoth as a permanent soccer home.

Football Federation Australia chief executive David Gallop has said that ‘big cities with populations in the millions not just hundreds of thousands’ are preferred.

Simonds Stadium looks set to break the 20,000-crowd barrier for a second straight year on Friday night when Melbourne Victory hosts Central Coast Mariners.

Local soccer legends Josip Skoko, Steve Horvat and Adrian Leijer have joined Geelong mayor Darren Lyons in declaring that the region ticked most boxes with regards to housing a club.

“It’s the biggest growing sport in the country and we’ve got a part to play, we should have our own A-League team,’’ Lyons said.

“The blinkers have got to come off and if you’re looking at one million plus populations, you’re going about it the wrong way about it.”

Former Socceroo Skoko, who lives in Geelong and trains his sons at his junior club North Geelong, said all that was needed was an individual or group of visionaries to make it happen.

“It has to be a new team and the enthusiasm’s there,’’ Skoko said.

“The infrastructure’s not the issue, it’s about getting the right persons to run it, that’s the missing ingredient.

“It needs a consortium or someone driving it prepared to inject funds but it wouldn’t be hard to attract top players, players would love the lifestyle.’’

Former Victory captain Leijer, who grew up in Jan Juc before playing for the Olyroos and Fulham, said the Cats’ following proved locals would back it.

“What the Geelong Football Club has done proves that the community is right behind the sport and there’s no reason why you couldn’t attract decent crowds,’’ Leijer said.

“The perfect model is Melbourne Victory, it had the right people, good backing, structure and a long term plan.

“If the right people got involved it would be a success.’’

Horvat, who was involved with a Melbourne United bid ahead of the inaugural A League season when Victory won the sole Victorian licence, said a strategy should be developed to ensure expansion was done correctly.

“It definitely should be put on the agenda, but it needs to be given time,’’ Horvat said.

“If it was a natural progression with a 5-10 year plan set in place it would be viable, maybe you could grow a club from an NPL base.

“It needs infrastructure in place, I don’t think Simonds Stadium is an ideal venue, maybe in the short term.’’

Have to agree, Geelong will be a great destination for an A-league side.

O' Donovan is a dirty bastard it's about time he got his right wack! never forgot the tackle he layed on Broxham in which could have broken his leg and he got away with it! Well he didn't get get away with it this time!

8 weeks for a headbutt is about right, it's up there in the disgusting category like spitting or kinghitting, hopefully he'll piss off out of the league come end off season too.

Yeah, I don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other - I'd have been happy with 6 weeks, I would've been just as happy with 12 weeks.

The issue is the intent - headbutts have no place in football, and whether you hit with severe force or not should really only make a difference of 1-2 weeks. If you headbutt and you connect, you deserve every bit of 6 weeks+.

While I don't rate Phil Moss' commentary, he made a really good point on FS News today when the presenter tried to compare it to the Muscat tackle. The clear difference is that tackling is a football action, whereas headbutting isn't. Yeah, they go badly, and yeah, you even get some with clear bad intent - but the fact remains that the action of tackling is inherent in football.

good comeback from Victory. Last goal was questionable for offside

From the vision of the second angle if you slow it down or freeze frame at 0:24sec it shows he is level and onside if he is off it's marginal and benifit of the doubt must go to the attacking team anyway, good call and good goal.

It should go to the attacker but rarely does.

Did I hear Craig Kiddycuddler say on SBS the other day that the A-league had lost about $300m since its inception??

The fact that you're trying to lampoon a man for being affectionate with his daughter says a hell of a lot more about you than it says about him.
