The campaign was successful and those outcomes could have been maintained in perpetuality with just a skeleton presence. Obama pulled the troops out too soon.

I'd argue that USA middle East policy on how to deal with Northern Iraq and Syria had a far bigger influence on the creation of ISIS than Assad. The lack of direction the USA has on how to deal with them means that they are getting into bed with Iran over how to deal with them, the fact this has lead to the easing of a number of UN sanctions against Iran that has gone unreported is interesting.

Can you clarify this a bit? What do you mean by US Middle East policy to 'deal' with Northern Iraq and Syria?

They tried for that and the Iraqi Government refused to sign a new Status of Forces Agreement. Bit hard to say you invaded a place to install democracy and then disobey the parliaments wishes. That's called occupation.

Doubt it would have been beneficial anyway.

They don't really have one. They will bomb them back into the dark ages, but they have no plan of what to do beyond that.

Ah I see. Sort of where I thought you were going with it. You've got your timeline wrong though. Assad helped create ISIS in response to the US invasion of Iraq. He wanted to unstabilise northern Iraq to deter US aggression and regime change in Syria. As the Sunni insurgency in northern Iraq was winding down along with the worst of the war he moved to eliminate his tools. Fairly similar to how the Pakistani military have used the Pakistani-Taliban and extremist groups in the borderlands. Strategic depth and proxy fighters.

For those that understands trumps absolute disdain for what the establishment has done to this world, his sarcastic comments to the cia in a meeting with 400 officials are funny as phuq.

Telling them if they get another chance of invading Iraq to steal the oil, they'll do it better this time. If you're in the know, its hilarious but also very insightful to things to come. It looks like he really hates these feckers and they hate him.

but it ceases being funny when you realize what they did to the world (not just iraq) to steal oil.

The biggest mistake was going in in the first place, the second mistake which was nearly as big, was to not follow up the invasion with enough occupying forces. The destruction the Bath party & the armed forces was the 3rd stupid mistake.
Even at the end of WW2, the allies, under McArthur, left the public service, police & armed forces in Japan to help keep civil order & help change the Constitutional arrangements for the new Japanese democracy. Thats how you do it!
Bush, Rumsfeld & those idiots were like cowboys rolling into town. Blow it up & leave a civil power vacuum.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.

up there with Alexander Downers things that batter. He was not talking Gray Nicolls, unless he became Wayne Carey.

And Downer was less nefarious, unless he sought to invade the entire female nation of mesopotamia

You can laugh it off, but it goes to character, goes to evidence, he indicts himself. just leave the hot mike on him at all times. the cia can do that no?

Why wouldn't the CIA back a sane and sensible Hilary rather than an narcissistic sociopath who is a pathological liar with sadistic tendencies, zero impulse control and an ego bigger than known universe? .

I'd say disbanding the Iraqi army was the second big mistake - you instantly have hundreds of thousands of armed, unemployed, angry, trained militants searching for a new source of income in a shattered country with a huge power vacuum.

It would be hard to intentionally make a worse decision.

"Mission Accomplished" indeed.

Killary is sensible? In what way?
She doesn't whinge like a little bitch on Twitter anytime someone disagrees with her for a start.
Is Trump the thinnest skinned world leader in recent history?

She's sensible because she isn't Trump. I don't think that's evidence of her being sensible.

Has anyone read Debriefing the President? I've just started it, it's pretty good.

Hussein was a murderous piece of s**t, so him being deposed in itself in isolation wasn't a bad thing.

However, the almost complete disenfranchisement of the Sunnis that was allowed to proceed almost unimpeded post-2003 is why Iraq is still in a mess now.

And the reasons used for going into Iraq in the first place were undoubtedly bogus.
