Is the mooted 20m rule a response to Hawthorn?

The AFL Laws committee are considering an increase from 15m to 20m as the minimum kick distance for a mark to be paid - see http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-04-24/plus-five-for-a-mark .

On first thoughts it would seem that this is a knee jerk response to the "chippy chippy" keepings off style of game employed by Hawthorn.

As Chris Scott stated in his post match press conference, many of the Hawk's kicks travel in the 10m - 12m vicinity but are nonetheless paid as marks by the officials.

Do we need to extend the minimum distance from 15m to 20m or is it a case of the umpires being more diligent in administering the current 15m rule?

Discuss.

Hawthorn play a good brand of footy, changing the way they play won't be good for the game. More long kicks to contests will happen which means the rolling maul will only get worse.

Could the AFL go 5 years without making laws to prevent hawthorns gameplan style? Maybe hold shitty umpires into account rather then making more rules? just freaking cut a bunch of 15 by 15m Squares into the MCG so the umpire can at least judge distance without "Winging it"

It seems like a direct response to milking the clock in general, which probably happens in half the games played every week to some extent. It would be designed to say that you can still do it, but it's going to be a bit more difficult. Which, if anything, gives highly-skilled sides like Hawthorn an advantage.

Good god they still think and whinge the rushed behind rule was because of them.

Can't wait to see how long we hear about this for.

Extending the distance to 20m is a great idea in theory. Teams in possession get an unfair advantage by chipping 10-15m, taking a mark and reorganizing. And the short pass-mark-short pass-mark game is ugly.

The problem of course is that umpires cannot judge the present 15m minimum distance; they will have no hope of judging a 20m distance.

So you can no longer rush behinds under pressure like Hawthorn did in the 2008 Grand Final?

Joel Bowden is the reason we have this rule.
We rushed them without pressure to quickly set up play out of defence.

That is what you are no longer allowed to do.

Brent Guerra said on open mike the other week it wasn't a planned tactic going into the 08 gf.

15m is fine, the umpires are the problem. its funny how a player can run halfway through the 50 or the middle of the ground without bouncing the ball, yet you can just about kick it the length of the goal square and be paid a mark.

Actually the coaches are to blame as they have devised the tactic of flooding all over the ground, players not staying in their positions and brainwashing players not to kick to contests. Due to this it is hard to find room anywhere to kick, unless they bomb it forward, so they kick it backwards, chip it around or switch sides looking for room to open the game.

Hopefully the AFL will completely disregard any comments from the coaches and do whatever it takes to fix the mess the coaches have made of our once great game.

Just leave it alone AFL, the only thing broken with this game is the continuous changes by the AFL and lack of education to its Umpiring....and the pathetic stuff like MRP and Goal Review.

If umpires would umpire properly..........if the AFL could teach the umpires to umpire properly.........if the AFL didn't over complicate the game with its changes so it makes it harder to umpire properly..........

But that's okay as according to the AFL it seems that its all the clubs faults, the coaches fault, the players fault, the members fault, the supporters fault..........for everything wrong with the AFL.

Pretty sure this whole not kick to contests started when the AFL brought in stuff like "Hands in the Back" (Rather than push in the back) and chop of the arms etc. The AFLs rules removed contests.......why would the coaches still kick to contests?
