Is this the end of the Greens?

Analysis of election results by The Australian using 2011 census data compiled by the NSW parliamentary library reveals the secret of the Greens’ success appears to be the party’s appeal to atheists and the well-off.

ABC election analyst Antony Green studied the demographics of the Greens vote in the 2010 federal election, concluding Labor and the Greens are not engaged in a battle over Labor heartland but that the Greens were concentrated in the inner cities and among the “knowledge elite.”

He remarked that “high Green support basically disappears at the end of the tram lines” in Melbourne.

Idiot.

I love how the well off supposedly support The Greens. Message to those with money "The Greens hate you and want to tax you into the ground to support their imaginary utopia!"

This is quite correct. Young professionals are the real and growing supporter base that are voting Green atm. That would have to be a worrying trend on the part of the big two parties.

Saying that the Greens supporter base is a large percentage "simply dole bludging scum" is akin to saying the Liberals are only supported by "rich plutocrats and religious nutjobs".
They may be growing but not core support basically the greens have captured the left leaning Chardonnay socialists off the alp this has centralised support in inner city seats of central sydney and Melb but overall support has not risen that much they are bleeding votes in tas sa etc. core support is still with welfare recipients students etc. and I suppose hard core athiests

Why won't anyone think of the children? Vote 1 Greens for me.

Actually, I think it's part of the appeal.

You're all evil sinners, and the only way you can atone is to support us and let us flagellate the sin out of you!

They're more a religion than any of the official religions, complete with dogma that mustn't be questioned whatever new evidence comes up (climate change) and original sin (the harm done to the indigenous before you were born).

I'm shocked. Here I was, certain that you were a rusted on Lib.
You are not serious?
Last time I voted Liberal was for John Gorton, and in between those times, Don Chipp or Labor.
Hardly rusted on anything but currently am really partial to DiNatale and Ludlum.

It was a joke, I assure you. I have trouble seeing you as being to the right of anything.

Could say the same of you except it would be centre and left.:p

Fair call mostly, although I like to think I pick my position on each issue as it comes up, and on some, I'd give you a run for your money to the left :) I will concede I tend toward the right of center though.

I'm always right :)

Idiot.

I'm from "dole bludging central" and I can tell you that the large majority of the working class/bludgers there overwhelmingly vote ALP or the Libs and would rather vote for PUP as a third option. The greens are loathed. Seen as inner city middle to upper class w***ers who are out of touch etc.

They'd compromise. People used to say the same things about the German Greens, but they maintained a governing coalition from 1998 to 2005. Germany didn't fall apart.

Different in NSW and Vic

Imagine how the nation would be run if they continue that no compromise stance with other nations, unions, industry and even government departments.

That's the problem with dogma

Hell, imagine if all parties did the same...

unfortunately politics does seem to over-ride the national interest

all we can hope for is incompetent government otherwise we get a dangerous one

I think most would believe they're acting in the national interest. They just have (significantly?) different views of what that is, and how to achieve it.
