Delisted Jed Adcock (2003-2015)

NEW coach Justin Leppitsch says the playing group drove the move to relieve Jonathan Brown of the captaincy at the Brisbane Lions.
Triple premiership forward Brown will act as an official mentor for Jed Adcock, the player with whom he shared the captaincy last season.
Under a new leadership structure, Tom Rockliff will be the sole vice captain, with Daniel Merrett, Daniel Rich and Joel Patful the new deputies.

The reins may have been officially handed to Jed Adcock but Brisbane Lions coach Justin Leppitsch says former captain Jonathan Brown will still be as influential as ever at the AFL club in 2014.

Adcock, 28, was on Thursday unveiled as the sole Lions skipper after sharing the role with Brown last season.

Midfielder Tom Rockliff, 23, will be Adcock’s deputy while Daniel Rich, Joel Patfull and Daniel Merrett have been appointed deputy vice-captains.

IT HAS been a long road to the top, literally, for Jed Adcock.

And no one knows that more than his dad Paul.

The new Brisbane Lions captain told me I would find his father a few kilometres outside the small Victorian goldfields town of Maryborough, in all likelihood propped up in front of the TV watching the cricket.

And I did, dragging Paul Adcock away from watching Friday's one-dayer in Perth to talk about Jed's rise to the Brisbane Lions' captaincy.

The Poms were, in a rarity this summer, hitting the Aussie bowlers all over the WACA but Paul only wanted to talk about another cricket star.

"You know Jed was a very good cricketer, too,'' Paul says.

"He played A grade for Maryborough when he was just 15. He opened the bowling with his medium pace and sent down 15 overs straight in one match for figures of 1-14.

Newly named Lions captain Jed Adcock said he was excited to see such a great response from Springfield and Ipswich.

"It's been great spending the last couple of days in Ipswich and Springfield," he said.

"People have been really excited to see us and it's great to see Aussie Rules making an impact in places like Springfield.

"It's great to see how excited people are about the Lions setting up here."

BRISBANE Lions captain Jed Adcock has tipped most of his side's big names will be fit for the pre-season match against the Sydney Swans at Burpengary next month.

The Lions trained at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex on Thursday, a test for the new $13 million facility and the Brisbane group under the guidance of new coach Justin Leppitsch.

Adcock said a question mark still hung over former captain Jonathon Brown.

"Usually come the last game (of pre-season) you'll be playing your strongest team so everyone will be fighting for that last game," he said.

"(Fullback Daniel Merrett) will be ready to go round one; he'll play NAB Cup. Browny's really your main one.

"(New recruit) Jackson Paine will probably play. He's moving back into full training now."

It was the group's first full-match simulation of the season, following shorter game-like hitouts earlier in the week.

Jed Adcock has some pretty big shoes to fill after he was named as only the third sole Captain in the Brisbane Lions’ merged history over the off-season – following in the esteemed footsteps of Michael Voss and Jonathan Brown.

And while Adcock probably doesn’t boast the same profile as Voss or Brown, he has all the necessary attributes to be equally effective as an on-field leader.

In fact Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch, who played alongside some great Captains in Voss and Roger Merrett, says Adcock’s on-field leadership is among the “best he’s seen”.

“Obviously he’s going to be a different Captain than Browny,” Leppitsch tol SEN radio in Melbourne on Tuesday.

“Jed’s obviously a very good player, but he’s also a very smart thinker of the game and a very good organiser on the field.

“Why he got the nod as Captain was because of his on-field leadership and ability to organise others. He’s one of the best I’ve seen at that.

“They’re the things the public probably don’t get to see, but it’s something that we really appreciate and value.”

Adcock represented the Club for the first time as sole skipper at 2014 AFL Season Launch in Adelaide on Tuesday.

Brisbane Lions captain Jed Adcock says his AFL team can beat top teams this year, despite a high turnover in staff and players.

With a new captain, up to 10 new players and a new coach in Justin Leppitsch, he says 2014 won’t be used as a testing period.

“This is not a transitional period,” Adcock said.

“If we’re fit and injury free, we have the ability to challenge any team in the comp.”

Good to see Tairy was willing to ask the tough questions from which most journos shy away.

Jed Adcock heads up new era for Brisbane Lions

Adcock’s captaincy begins a genuine new era at the Lions. He has waited a long time for the old guard from the premiership years to either move on (former captain and coach Michael Voss), retire (Simon Black) or step aside (Brown) before he got his chance to run the ship himself.

Now 28, with two young children, he is just four years younger than Brown. But without criticising his predecessor, he speaks of a ''generation gap'', and says he has a different relationship with the players coming through. Perhaps his empathy comes more from experience: Adcock never knew the success of his older teammates.

More importantly, it's good to see a journalist at least acknowledging reality:

Through all of last year’s travails, it gets forgotten that the Lions actually played some pretty good football. Notwithstanding Essendon’s travails, they missed the finals by a kick, failing to upset Geelong on their home patch by a single point in the last round, allowing Carlton through.

Yet the club is a popular pick for the bottom four this year. Adcock’s not having it, but he is circumspect, too. ''You’ve got to think you can make it,'' he says. ''Without talking finals though, you look at last year … The stats were if you win the NAB Cup, you finish top four. We sure blew that one out of the water.''

I think he actually holds a bit of hope that he’s going to play this year, but we all know he’s not.

Captain Jed Adcock’s on-field leadership role at the Brisbane Lions has become even more important following a spate of injuries to the Club’s more senior players.

With Jonathan Brown and Ash McGrath sidelined, Adcock was the most experience Lions player on the field during last week’s match against Sydney, and was one of just six players in the team with 100 or more AFL games to his name.

Sydney, meanwhile, had twice the amount of 100-gamers with 12.

Adcock told SEN Radio in Melbourne on Thursday that extra responsibilities come with leading one of the youngest sides in the AFL competition.

“The most important thing as a leader is that you lead from the front on the field,” Adcock told SEN’s Morning Glory.

“(The role) changes a bit when you’ve got a younger group. You probably need to control the group a little bit more and help out when you need to.

“When you’ve got a more experienced and senior core, you pretty much just go out there and play footy because the rest of the team know what they’re doing.

“It’s important to keep interactive, get around the young guys as much as possible, and let them learn from your experience when you can.”

Adcock also revealed that teammate Daniel Rich was in a positive state of mind since returning to Brisbane after undergoing a knee reconstruction.

“For a bloke that had an ACL done four weeks ago…I’ve never seen a bloke move so well. The crutches are gone, he’s got fair extension in his knee, and is moving quite well,” Adcock said.

“I think he actually holds a bit of hope that he’s going to play this year, but we all know he’s not.

“The ability for him to get where he is now has been quite impressive.”

Adcock gives 100% whenever he is out there - watching games live you will see one player over and over again busting his gut running to put pressure on when it looks like the Lions defences will be broken through.

Not everyone here shares this opinion, but for me it is clear as day why he is our captain (as it is also clear to me Rocky is our future captain).

Yep, he's leading exceptionally well. Blossoming into the captaincy.

If I had a dollar for every time a Brisbane "supporter" at the Gabba unfairly panned him for "not playing on his man" when he is in the process of mopping up the mess from a teammate's structural lapse, well, I'd have enough to buy a hot dog at every game.

Also a big middle finger to the bloke in my section who seems to take umbrance at Adcock pointing teammates to where they should be standing. How dare the captain issue instructions on the field!
