Rumour Jed Adcock to leave Brisbane

You're right, we should have kept him on next year, on the list space, in the salary cap, and see how pissed off he'd get when he played 2 games for the year. Good call.

You're trying to repair your bad reputation in regards to how some of your players have been treated and now this. Certainly won't help that reputation for further recruiting. And each year you have kids wanting out. Adcock seems like the type of bloke if been told you won't see much senior footy, he would take that as a challenge.

He deserved better.

My understanding is that Adcock was simply told he couldn't be guaranteed games next year and that there would be a lot of competition for his spot. As a consequence, any contract would have to be based on that. He chose to part ways with the club as a result of the conversation, as is his right. In other words, normal list management and a player then making decisions on the best way to maximise his earnings by finding one last contract somewhere else.

Are you seriously suggesting that the club should have not told him the truth? Or that the club should have signed him on a big contract that doesn't reflect his changed role in the team? Would you want your club to do that to a player? Reputations or not, the club has to manage its list. Does the club hold on to a 30-year-old who may struggle to get games...or...spend some of that money to sign some of the younger guys and keep them here and developing? Sounds like a bit of a smart move by the club. Not pleasant, but smart. Adcock deserved better but so does virtually every player from every club who has to face the end - it is a pretty cruel and unforgiving business and most players don't get to choose the timing or manner their career ends. At least Adcock gets a chance at one more contract somewhere if he wishes.

The Lions may have many problems but signing older players to contracts when their performance may no longer warrant it sounds like a great way to stay at the bottom for a lot longer. There has hardly been a rush of clubs with interest in Jed - he is a solid, loyal player, but he is what he is - a 30-year-old who is going to be overtaken quite quickly by other younger players fairly soon.

I hope he gets a contract somewhere. He will have my respect for what he has done for the club.

But it may just be his time.

Yeah, we badly treated those 5 kids who wanted to leave and TO WHOMS CLUBS THEY REQUESTED WE GOT THEM TO, very good call there.

We've had this situation before. We had to tell Power, a well respected player, that we couldnt 100% give him a place in the side the next season as we had kids coming through. He accepted that and went to GWS for a few seasons. Bradshaw, we offered up for trade. That disgruntled him, fine, he left to Sydney. Signed a 3 year deal, saw only 9 games in his first year then retired. What a s**t club we were for not giving him the 3 year 500k he wanted.

Who else do you want to bring up? Mitch Clark, who we accepted his request for a trade?

From the public's perspective Brisbane handles this poorly. Not necessarily for not giving him another contract. Or for telling him his spot is not secure. But rather for not giving him the respect a former captain and 200 game player deserves- allowing him to announce his retirement or ask for a trade. Its not like Adcock's manager couldn't quietly enquire with other clubs. For the CEO to announce that he's not getting another contract three games before the end of the season is poor. and isn't list management the list managers job, not the CEO's?
From a wider football community it doesn't help your reputation.

None of us really know the 100% truth of what happened behind the closed doors though. Adcock likely would have asked Leppa about next season, particuarly after an article earlier in the year quoted Swann as saying players who were 29-30 years old would be getting single year contracts only, due to our need to build from our youth. Unfortunately for Adcock, his role in the club is one highly fillable. Hes not a midfielder, ruck or key position. Hes a half back flanker playing in the forward line. He requested our position and we told him.

The fact that it got reported that we SACKED HIM (Somehow, someone obviously leaked it) and the club was then forced to release a statement saying we hadnt SACKED him, we were just not renewing his contract at the end of the year. In the AFL, the Media is half the time the cause of all this, what you call, "disrespect of former captain/200 game players".

But everyones quick to kick a boot into the club and say "How dare you not give him another contract/let him deicide if hes going to retire or request a trade".

You're all suddenly experts when it comes to hanging s**t on clubs that are not your own and its a pretty disgusting attribute to have.

I dunno, but I haven't seen this at West Coast. Former Captain and Premiership coach John Worsfold resigned for more time with the family. Although many suspect he was encouraged to resign, he doesn't have the 'sacked coach' tag, and the club's relationship with a champion of the club is great.

Dean Cox chose to retire. Given Lycett wouldn't have signed if Cox had signed for another season, and that was West Coast's priority we would be less than surprised if the Eagles hadn't nicely hinted it to him/suggested for him to retire. And Cox's relationship with the club is such that he is still ruck coach.

The insult bolded is pretty disgusting, and I don't believe I'm "hanging s**t" when all i said is it could be better handled, backing it up with a better suggestion based on my own clubs experience.

It could be better handled by shooting anyone in a 100m radius of the conversation HELD PRIVATELY between Adcock and Leppa about his future. Instead someone blabbed, which is more insulting to Adcock than anything because now he doesnt get a chance to announce his own intentions.

Probably should point out Adcock is also an UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT at the end of the year. So either he can find a club as a free agent or, we could delist him and he can find a way through that, but thats up to him and the club to decide. I dont think he'd attract much of a compensation pick, as hes unlikely to be getting many 500k+ offers of 3+ years. Nothing against the man himself, but hes not worth much.

Whats annoying most of us Brisbane supporters is everyone saying we are a s**t club for doing something every club does every year in delisting players, only difference here is we TOLD the guy in advance. Because he ASKED. And we gave him the HONEST ANSWER. And it was leaked to the Media and we were forced to correct the "Brisbane Sacks Adcock" headlines to "Brisbane and Adcock Part Ways" which means at the end of the season he'll be free to continue his career elsewhere.

Its not like we called his wife and told her to tell him to * off and not come back to the club.

Lions players crying in an honesty session fwaaaaaaaaaaark. Turing into Fitzroy with every passing season.
Men crying because another man tells you you don't pass a football enough, or you're a stinge, or you try to root everyone's girlfriend, is pathetic enough in itself.

You can't blame Jed for wanting out, he provided stable captaincy while he was at the Lions only to be overthrown by someone he would have known was a poor captain choice. I don't think he is in any other teams best 22 but would definitely be in Brisbanes, for his leadership/experience at least.
