Hine pulled the trigger on Young because he rated him in his first draft when he was soley a recruiter.

I love what Hine has done drafting wise, but he is a terrible list manager.

Pretty big statement there. Care to elaborate why he is a "terrible list manager?"

Saying he's a bad list manager is poor. What he is is bad at identifying established talent, however this 'evidence' has been offset with the receuitment of Varcoe and Crisp both of which have blossomed here (although I guess Crisp wasn't so established and is still young). Hine is top class at the trade table, and that's indisputable.

don't think he was in charge of the lists, walsh was . stand to corrected though if wrong

We have played money-ball with a number of players we have brought in over the last few years, you can see the logic, one trick ponies possessing the one trick we need but not being able to do enough.

When Anvil retired and Daw was moved on we got Lynch, reasonable to expect he would give us good service for a couple of seasons, but his long accurate kicking had deserted him, he ended up being serviceable as a second ruckman and useless as a chop out for Clokey. White much the same, kicks soft goals, goes missing when the heat it on.

When we were genuinely crap at kicking we got Young for his outside run and long accurate kick, unfortunately the hammies and the rest of his game were just not quite up to it.

Varcoe had a good year, few would doubt he was a good pick up, Crisp has been a revelation.

I think there will always be a money ball trade or pick and it doesn't hurt to roll the dice sometimes.

Howe is a decent player but it would astound me if the pies made a play for him considering elliot is a similar kind of player (can take a good grab for a small player). Especially on 500-600k.

This rumour starting to gather some steam with talk being a swap for Kennedy (unclear whether pick exchange would also be involved). If it was a straight swap I don't mind this.. Reckon Kennedy has real potential but has struggled at AFL level. Howe's salary my biggest concern.

Interested in what others think.

I think it's a great idea.
I presume his salary will be performance based and would've been fleshed out in the (rumoured) 3 meetings he had with Dekka.

I've got no problems with it. Is he the difference between where we are now and say top 4 or a flag? Nope. But who knows he might be a good role player for us.

I think he's a good list fit and a better performed player than Kennedy (in a different position of course).

Kennedy is about 5th/6th in line for an insider midfield role at the Pies and will struggle to crack a game all year. He has next to no goal sense despite what others claim in here so as a forward he is not very good.

Howe can play forward, is dangerous and a good kick. I don't think he can be left alone or zoned off too much by his defender.

He's a bit of a flaky player so I don't expect too much from him but I do think he can be useful (more so than Kennedy).

So for the right price ($ wise) it's a yes from me.

Also, it's a team of people who do the list management and drafting. Not just Hine.

So footy players get on the piss together in Bali and that is confirmation of a trade. If that was the case Martin from the tigers would have been with us years ago.

Sending him to the midfield is ridiculous. Using him as a specialist small forward who can play tall seems more sensible. If anyone is any good down back or in attack they get stuck in the mid-field. Why? Elliott is nowhere near as effective paying midfield as forward.

I think the reality of the modern game is that he'll get an occasional midfield/wing rotation but agree that he should be used predominantly as a forward. He still gets opportunities to work up the ground in that forward role and he's shown he can be very creative in a link up role and moving the ball into F50. Front and centre F50 crumbing is not his natural game though so I'm confused why some want to see him groomed in that role, I think Fas has greater scope in that regard.

I wouldnt mind getting Howe cheaply if the draft is as weak as so many people think. However, i have to be honest and say i do not rate him.

Tend to agree.

Don't discard it to quickly. Varcoe met up with Bucks last year which got him coming to us. Seems like Bucks is holding the interviews from his Bali office which is less in the public eye than the Holden Center.
And Martin decided to prolong his holiday by staying at Richmond.

I would be very keen on getting Howe to be honest. Send Dees the pick 24 we get from them for mine. Moore, Cloke, Howe, Elliott and a couple of mids floating through it would be handy. Really just lacks a small fella with genuine speed and goal sense.

Broomy and Abbott handy small-medium forward prospects.

White can be justified but Lynch and Young were awful decisions. You don't get free shots with list management, there is always harm with recruiting multiple screw ups.

Young was always injured at Hawthorn. He wasn't a bad luck story - exactly what happened is what many of us said would happen.

Lynch was clearly finished and was a complete waste of time. These weren't poor decisions in hindsight, large segments of our supporter base could see these were bad decisions from the outset.

White is an argument for another time but in the context of interest in Howe, it suggests that our club believes that it can turn around mentally weak players. This is potentially arrogant and reckless list management. We don't need to be taking risks at this point.

As much as anything these guys were recruited to take the pressure off the kids while they developed so it was a sound strategy. I can't understand why some supporters think these types of players will land at Collingwood and automatically start to produce more than they've shown at their previous club. Sets up unrealistic expectations and angst.

And I don't think the club arrogantly assumes anything, I think they know exactly what they'll get and have identified some aspect in an individual player that could potentially improve our overall performances (ie: Lynch/White - 2nd ruck 3rd tall forward; Young - penetrating disposal to help overcome zoning).

Bucks did that with Varcoe last year;)

How about our skipper? On his wedding/honeymoon and he's still going that extra yard to improve the club. What a champ.

Think I'd prefer to be stay with Alex TBH.
