I'm going to throw it out here. I am of the opinion that Watson isn't really injured, he is either:
a) Taking a voluntary suspension in case CAS finds the players guilty.
b) Protesting Hird's position as coach and is clearly sick of him.
c) Mentally fried, cannot take it any more.
Now, let me explain why I don't think he's actually injured. See this video here. Essendon is claiming this to be the cause. Doesn't seem much in such a bump at all, he doesn't even clutch his shoulder in pain, it doesn't seem to be dislocated or anything, he plays on like nothing's happened. What adds to the intrigue is the circumstances surrounding this - his form, his obvious mental anguish, the fact he has publicly stated he really isn't enjoying his football, etc.
I don't think a) is too far fetched if he has spilled his guts to Richard Young hoping for the players to get a lighter penalty, or he knows something about the case that we don't. People might think b) is an impossibility, but the players have pretty much stopped playing for Hird and we must remember that Essendon actually tried to sack him earlier but didn't go through with it for legal reasons. The powers that be would be supporting a protest/player revolt for sure because Hird seems to have them over a barrel and they'd need a legitimate excuse to sack him. And finally, c) is self explanatory and I think the most likely option.
What do you guys think?
