Excels at the basics and also quite a smart footballer. But not one of the blokes who live in the special football dimension and who can do abnormal things on the field like Ablett(s), Hird, Stevie J at times.

I would say that the way has launches at the pill in contests is something abnormal in itself, it's just not pretty.

The thing that makes leaders is there ability to not accept losing. This forces them to do whatever it takes both individually and to their team to force winning.

Joel has this attribute as strong as the greats like Brereton, Voss, Hird, Carey et al.

And he is only 24???

best I correct you before Podgey has meltdown - he's 26 in 9 days time

It's just a hypothetical… I'm not downplaying Selwood's achievements in any way. It's more of an observation about the way the people rank the best players from 1 to 10. People seem to rate the guns from the top teams more highly than the guns from the struggling teams.

Look it at the other way, the fact Joel Selwood established his position in what became the Cats 2007 premiership side virtually straight away, should tell you what kind of talent he has. This wasn't a case of Selwood being gifted a spot in a top team, he earned it and kept it. From what I have observed of him over the years, if PA had of taken him he would have been the same kind of player no matter what. He didn't win the rising star in 2007 for no reason, and what his team mates say about him from the first day they met him is just how professional he is in how he trains and acts around the club, and plays. He came to the club like that, so if PA had of drafted him instead of Boak then he would've won a number of B&F's there I suspect.

He is no doubt a great player. Definite A grader. But I think the question here is whether he deserves to be right at the top of that A grader pile. My answer, he's pretty close. But not quite as close as the hype makes him out to be.

No one I know has ever said that he "ducks" for frees

It's always dropping the knees he gets accused of. Because he does. How else can he draw double the high tackles unless physics is playing a part?

His actions draw a free because the opponent cannot possible anticipate he would be so cheap to drop further down at the very last milliseconds from contact.

Bloke is skilled, but counting cards is too, and isn't that looked upon oh so favourably by Casinos? In this context, the greater football community looks upon these tactics in the same way.

So the meme should read "If you drop your knees, you draw a free kick". And I severely hope he doesn't teach a generation to do so.

He tends to shrug tackles more than most I've seen. Most of the time he lifts his arms up which moves opponents arms around his neck. Sometimes he tries to go under the tackle and that could be seen as ducking I guess. I don't think he's playing for it though. He just tries to bulldoze his way through.

But to answer the op, I'm very happy he's our captain. An extremely good leader and a very skilled footballer. You'd think most teams would be pleased to have him on their list.

How are people not getting this. It's really simple.
Elbow comes up. Tackler's arm slides up.

Any team would be mad not to want him, I'd kill to have him a WCE.
Elite gets thrown around too much but he is truly elite.

Love to watch him play...Just a pleasure for any true fan of AFL.

A Fremantle supporter taking the moral high ground... Ah, the irony.

True.

Anyone thinking otherwise should try and 'drop the knees' when running, not to mention at full tilt. It's not possible.

He drops his shoulder / lifts elbow towards the oncoming tackler, which has always been his natural instinct in avoiding a tackle, then as you've said, unless the tackle is in the hip region, it may be high. Often he breaks free anyway, either that or gets clothes lined. The solution has always been to get lower and go at his core. Players dumb enough or not coached well enough, give away a free kick.

EDIT- There are currently 20 players averaging more free kicks per game than Selwood in 2014, most of whom are midfielders.

Hard to say this, but he is an elite player. Spewing that he could've been a Hawk. Not the most skilled mid but he always stands up when it counts. I would rate him in the top 10 players in the AFL and the second best captain behind Hodge (I'm biased).

He is probably 2nd best in the league currently. I think the theory that he always stands up in big games is overblown though. Yes he normally dominates us but apart from the 2011 GF(I had him as BOG), I'm struggling to think of another really great final he has played.

He was pretty damn good throughout that whole series, and played well in the 2012 and 2013 finals without ripping teams to shreds, but you're right in that he hasn't been BOG in a final before apart from 2011.

His big game reputation has definitely come from murdering Hawthorn. Four players in the hoops always seem/seemed to lift when playing Hawthorn - him, Ottens, Chapman and Taylor. Well, you're two down...

Surprised you say that - the 2008 Grand Final. Was probably our second best player behind Ablett.

Was good that day, but I would have had him 5th BOG at best.

For example, his last 4 finals I would rank them as good, average, good, average. No real standout games among them. I agree with the previous poster who said that his reputation as a big game largely comes from his games against us
