BRISBANE Lions champion Jonathan Brown has given new coach Justin Leppitsch a kick-start by announcing he will play on in 2014.
Brown, who turns 32 this month, has decided to extend his AFL career into a 15th season after signing a one-year deal.

His 2013 season was cut short after he sustained a serious foot injury in August. The lengthy rehabilitation, his age and battle with injury over his career, cast doubt on whether he would continue on next season.

But after a meeting with new coach and former teammate Leppitsch, the co-captain agreed to a new deal.
"I've still got the passion to play, but I was also mindful of the fact that the new coach might have other plans," Brown told the Lions' website.

JONATHAN Brown has decided to extend his AFL career after signing a new deal with the Brisbane Lions.
Brown, who turns 32 later this month, delayed a decision on his future until meeting with new coach Justin Leppitsch.
The triple premiership player had his 2013 season cut short by a plantar fascia injury in round 19, but said he was itching to play a 15th season.
"I’ve still got the passion to play, but I was also mindful of the fact that the new coach might have other plans," Brown said.
“But I had a good chat with Leppa and he basically laid out his plans and said he saw me as being part of them.
"I feel as though I still have some pretty good footy left in me, particularly after finishing last season earlier than I would have liked.
“Plus, with such a young group, hopefully I can play a role in helping to continue bring that next generation of Lions forwards through."

Brisbane Lions co-captain Jonathan Brown to play full forward more often
November 28, 2013
Paul Malone

JONATHAN Brown will spend most of next season as a full forward in new Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch's mix to establish a winning game plan.

After 245 games which established him as one of modern Australian football's best and most fearless centre half-forwards, Brown will no longer be required to undertake the bone-jarring endurance running which has been another of his career trademarks.

"The intention is for him to play deeper. Whether that prolongs him or not, it's secondary to the fact it's his role,'' Leppitsch said.

"We will manage him through the year.

"It's where his best position is. If we have more strapping guys who can get up and down the ground in that half forward role, we will use that strength.''

From the above article:

Brown, the Lions' second longest-serving captain, is expected to step away from the role next season after sharing the skipper's duties with Jed Adcock this year.

Leppitsch has confirmed Brown is keen to help the young Lions in an unofficial capacity next year.

Adcock could replace Brown outright as skipper, while this year's vice-captains Tom Rockliff and Daniel Rich would also be in the leadership mix.

Interesting to see what they do.

Brown isn't quick and can't jump, so he has limitations as a full forward. His best footy has always when he roams up the ground and runs his opponent into the ground. We will need quick ball movement, alternate marking targets, an organised forward line and skillful forward 50 entries, otherwise defenders will have a field day jumping all over Brown.

The article even alludes to Brown's strengths as a player by mentioning Brian Lake will be taking a sigh of relief. We'll see what happens. Best laid plans can quickly go out the window if things aren't working.

Was thinking much the same. If he's not going to be running downfield as much, he may be better served by getting a bit more weight back on so he can out-wrestle the fullback a la Lynch. Brown has fined down a fair bit in the past couple of years.

That's assuming his knees/hips can take the strain.

Browny has told me that he really struggles to keep weight on during the season, so they usually have him continue with heavy weights in an effort to preserve some size/strength.

Less running in games and less in training playing at FF as opposed to his usual roaming forward position (plus more strength/mass work as opposed to aerobic activities in training) will probably make his weight stay on over the season.

If still in any trouble, Browny should just give Tony Lockett a call for some advice.

I think people forget how good Browns game sense is. He isn't quick off the mark at all but can consistently get the 1-2 meters on his opponent needed to take a grab. I imagine we'll have a t least 2 roaming CHF's and leave Brown one out deep forward with Green and Zorko streaming forward with the flight of the ball crumbing.

Really excited to see what Close and Paparone can bring to the forward 50 next year too.

BRISBANE - Jonathan Brown (bowler)
Don't mention the 'R' word (rotation) to this big quick. He's already spent enough time sidelined with injury in recent years but now that it's summer and there's no chance he'll back into a pack, the shackles are off and he'll be steaming in. And you can guarantee it'll be off the long run.

Back in the day, backyard cricket was infamous at Browny's and was quite the pass-time for a lot of the Lions boys.

Brown suffers foot setback
December 10, 2013
Andrew Hamilton

JONATHAN Brown has suffered a setback in his recovery from the foot injury that prematurely ended his 2013 campaign and will not run again until the New Year.

Brown has been placed in a moon boot as a precautionary measure after the plantar fascia injury that ruled him out of the last month of the season.

Brown completed the full schedule of training in Arizona and was ahead of his usual pre-Christmas levels before complaining of a sore foot over the weekend.

The Brisbane co-captain attended yesterday's training session where he completed some stationary drills and spent time on the bike.

2013 Review - by Matt_BL

Jonathan Brown entered 2013 with some question marks over his head, some of these being will 2013 be his last season and can he still prove to be our number one target in the forward line? The first question, has been answered as Brown signed on for the 2014 season, which would seem likely to be his last bar an outstanding 2014 or Justin Leppitsch wanting to keep the skipper going.

Much like the team, 2013 for Brown got off to a slow start, the first two rounds but in particular round 2 against the Crows did raise a few questions about his form and whether he could be up to it. There were some doubters but a spectacular round 3 performance against the Gold Coast Suns where Brown kicked 5 including a great snap from the boundary silenced these critics fairly quickly. Brown’s season ended up yielding 28 goals from 15 games at an average of 1.8 goals a game. It was the highest at the club for the veteran key forward at 31 years of age.

Whether that says the team is too Brown centric, or that he is still the smartest and most opportunistic forward in the team is up for debate. It’s my opinion that Brown still has the football smarts, strength and fitness to still be of use even when he isn’t the main target up forward as there was a good goal spread from the small forwards and midfields.

This season it seemed the aggression Brown showed in the premiership years had returned, with the Round 8 clash against Essendon bringing the sleeping giant out to involve himself in a melee after a huge Justin Clarke hit on Elliot Kavanagh. Fans also saw a slightly awry arm hit Michael Jamison in the jaw in the Round 9 clash, which the hit saw a 2 week suspension given. As expected the great man labeled Jamison soft, and next time those two meet there won’t be much love lost, although whether Jamison is brave enough to take him on remains to be seen.

The season ending prematurely for Brown when he went down with a plantar fascia tear in Round 19 against St. Kilda where he pulled up abruptly early in the first quarter. Media speculation was that it may be the last time seeing Brown play, luckily it wasn’t to be.

Barring injuries and suspension, a 1.8 goal average and playing 22 games would have given around the 40+ goal season which is still a very good return for an aging key forward and Brisbane in 2013 being a middle ranged team. Whether this form continues is critical for the Lions’ chance to make the finals for the first time since 2009. Depending on the new game structure implemented by Justin Lepptisch it is hard to see whether Brown will continue his Centre Half Forward role or play closer to home allowing a number of new budding key forwards including Jackson Paine or Jordan Lisle to become the primary target inside the forward 50.

If Brown does choose to retire at seasons end it will be interesting to see what role he takes up in football. Brown is a popular media personality making regular panel appearances on the Footy Show during the season, but we also saw him venture into the coaching box, and featured prominently in the Round 23 game against Geelong where the Lions went down by 1 point. No doubt he would make a good assistant coach and may serve 2 years similar to Simon Black then seek opportunities elsewhere to broaden his football knowledge.

Whatever capacity Jonathan Brown serves in 2014 and beyond, he is one of the Brisbane greats and a great leader of the club.

BRISBANE captain Jonathan Brown will return to the Lions' pre-season training next week as he continues to overcome the foot problem which prematurely ended his 2013 AFL campaign.
Brown, who missed the last month of the season due to a plantar fascia injury, was forced to sit out the team's final two weeks of pre-season training before Christmas after suffering a setback in his recovery.

But new Lions coach Justin Leppitsch said the veteran forward is fine physically and should be back on the training track by the start of next week.
"Browny, from this point on, will have modified pre-seasons anyway," he said.
"I don't think it's affected his run into the games.
"He'll be back on the park in the next week or so once we get the running miles into his legs."

Jonathan Brown
“Browny’s been held up a little bit with that stress reaction in his foot. It’s unusual to see an older bloke get a stress reaction – you usually see it in younger guys who are still adapting to training.

“But coming off his plantar fascia injury last year, he’s probably just getting used to the loads again.

“He’s just had the all clear from the specialist so will start building up his load again now.”

NEW coach Justin Leppitsch says the playing group drove the move to relieve Jonathan Brown of the captaincy at the Brisbane Lions.
Triple premiership forward Brown will act as an official mentor for Jed Adcock, the player with whom he shared the captaincy last season.
Under a new leadership structure, Tom Rockliff will be the sole vice captain, with Daniel Merrett, Daniel Rich and Joel Patful the new deputies.
