Meet Brisbane's 'Mozzie Squad'

THE Mozzie Squad has Brisbane buzzing. Lions small forwards Josh Green (176cm, 80kg), Dayne Zorko (174cm, 78kg) and Lewis Taylor (173cm, 77kg) may be small but together they have had a giant impact on turning around the club’s fortunes.

Their fast, fearless and frenetic run-and-carry has become a genuine weapon for Brisbane who are gunning for three straight wins when they take on GWS at the Gabba on Saturday night. They have even developed a bit of attitude, clipping senior coach Justin Leppitsch for incorrectly referring to them as The Three Amigos. “We had to let Leppa know he got it wrong. It’s the Mozzie Squad. We are all under 180cm so everyone is against us. We have to stick together,’’ Green said. “Leppa has been great for all three of us. He has given us a licence to use our pace and really take the game on. “We like to start up the ground and sprint back towards goal and open up that space for the midfield which is quite important for the team.

Green has kicked 14 goals in nine games as well as averaging 14 disposals a game.

Who are the AFL's most improved players?

BRISBANE LIONS
Most improved: Josh Green

Always one of the most lively Lions, Green has turned himself into one of the best small forwards in the competition with his most consistent season to date. For a team that generates fewer inside 50s than any other in the competition, the 21-year-old has kicked 19 goals and forms a deadly combination with Dayne Zorko and Lewy Taylor. Green has gone from super-sub to one of the first Lions picked with his good vision, decision-making and class around goals.

After Round 17, looks all but certain to take home the clubs leading goal kicker award.

It'd be good if he can make it to 30, would cap off a pretty solid year for him.

Irrespective of how he finishes the season, he looks almost certain to win with one of the four lowest goal kicker tallies in our post-merger history.

1. 26 - Justin Leppitsch (1998)
2. 27 - Mitch Clark (2011)
3. 28 - Jonathan Brown (2013)
4. 42 - Daniel Bradshaw (2005)
...
17. 85 - Jonathan Brown (2009)

Should also join Jason Akermanis as the only Brisbane Lion players under 6ft to win the award :thumbsu:

Should make it to 30, has kicked a goal in every game bar one this season. 30ish goals in 20 games is a very solid return for a small forward in a struggling team.

Despite our problems with talls I'm stoked that we have a genuine small forward who can wreak havoc - I often forget he's only 22 as well.

Hope we can get him a win for his 50th against the Dees!

Insanely underrated year as a small forward kicking goals nearly every week in a forward line that has had too few entries and the ones that do arrive are often of sub-par quality. Takes his chances and keeps laying the pressure on.

A far cry from the guy I watched miss about 12 / 20 set shots at training from around 30-35 metres out only two seasons ago.

Big time player. A guy you can count on to show up every week and a lock in the top 5 of the B&F this year.

It's be good for him to work on his longer kicking. Seems to struggle to kick over 40m. Luke Power style.

I'd hate him if he played for another club. That sort of player. :D

Punchable little face and is partial to a bit of chirp. I love him!

The Lions’ ‘mozzie squad’ duo, Dayne Zorko and Josh Green, do not grab as many plaudits as opponents Jaeger O’Meara and Harley Bennell, but they far outshone the exciting Suns on Saturday night. For much of the night Zorko’s renowned flashy skills did not come off but he more than made up for it by collecting 21 contested possessions - and ended the game with two goals. Green has been inconsistent for the up-and-down Lions this season and his three-goal, seven-tackle display ensured his side’s midfield dominance did not go to waste.
I might be biased, but that seems a bit rough. He's averaged just over a couple of goals/game over the past 10 games, bagging at least 1 goal every game this season, except for one - notably the last time he played the Suns.

Classic statement typical of someone who has only a fleeting familiarity with our progress this year. The crap flowing last night from the commentary team about how poor the Suns were and such little acknowledgment of our effort was sickening. All the emphasis about the Suns young developing team when in fact we had more players with under 50 games playing than they did. And their coach has been reading from the Scott manual on post game press conferences - virtually no acknowledgment of our effort - all about what they didn't bring to the game.

Very rough. He plays mainly as a small forward and kicks goals by crumbing. Playing for a team like us all year, that is a tough job. He has taken a big step forward this year, and is a genuine threat up forward. You can just about put him down for 2 goals a game and his pressure keeps defenders honest. Whilst he hasnt really developed that midfield side to his game, he is just so good up forward.
