The kind of situation where a lack of exposure actually increases his appeal.
Round 1 last year he was exceptional. However, it was his marking in the forward 50 and not his ruck work that made him stand out for mind.
As he is being "considered" or "touted" as a pick 40 - rookie it is testament to the lack of key talls in the draft.
The ratings of Michael Apeness also suggest this.
As a forward for the Ranges I preferred Boyd (obviously) and O'Sullivan pre-injury over Apeness's form (also preferred Roth but he's not a key forward).
I am perplexed as to why Apeness would be considered a 1st round option. I think it would be preferable to look in the 3rd round for rucks from state leagues (well, not the VFL).

I'm only interested in Boyd firstly then Nankervis and M.Harvey as those key forward/ruck types. The others wouldn't be so highly rated any other year.

Knightmare, when will your final edit be of your mock draft?

I'll likely shuffle the order around tomorrow night.

I'm reading that Crouch may slide to Adelaide's pick 23. I'm not sure how I feel about this! I'm not sure he is the type we need.

From what the experts are saying Adelaide aren't looking at Crouch all that closely with others preferred interestingly.

Good luck with that. Just from Port's point of view I've heard Impey on one hand Apeness on the other, Port saying they are not interested in a tall forward then linked with two by Callum Twomey, rumours of Saints taking Dumont and Dunstan at 18 and 19 (two of my hopes, don't worry I have more ;) - and one of your previous incarnations). And that's just pick 21!

I'm at the stage of throwing my hands in the air and just accepting I will like whoever's name is read out. :p

Hi Knightmare,

There was a boy you had down in the other chances list and likened to Jeremy Howe. Seemed to have an X factor and was very consistent. I have forgotten his name but could not see the write up any more. Pretty sure he was a Victorian. Does this ring a bell?

For my next update I couldn't find room for Trent Dumont in my first round so at this point in time I have him at Port Adelaide's selection.

Port Adelaide having added Polec and White I just can't see adding more outside types. The team were effective from a ball movement and transition standpoint and if anything lacked that little bit inside so I'd be guessing one of the South Australian mids or even Crouch would be the choice.

For the Saints I also have Cripps and Hartung as young Twomey does. My first round will just end up looking a little different.

That said it will probably be completely different by the time I update it tomorrow so stay tuned folks.

There are two guys with some Jeremy Howe.

Matt Rennie for one can really take a hanger.

But Guy Dickson is the guy I like as that type. He wasn't invited to the draft combine or the state screening so he's not getting drafted as far as I can tell but none the less I like his game and if he wants to he could make a team later on if he puts chips away in a state league and continue to work at his game.

Yet again agree with your analysis and we had this discussion on the Port Board. We had stretches of games in 2013 where we just couldn't get our hands on the ball, so another genuine contested ball winner - or one of those pacy 190cm intercept types - would be most likely. Still more than happy with Dumont. ;)

Interestingly Geoff Parker in a draft Q&A on the Port website said "In this draft in particular, we’re going to be very focussed on needs."

KM, what's your opinion on Jacob Chisari from Pioneers? Does he have a shot, or is he a bit too short? From what I've heard, he had an outstanding year..

If we land both Aish and Scharenberg tomorrow evening I will think Xmas has come early. I rate Scharenberg above Aish and most other players in the draft. His ability to see the play unfold, find gaps in traffic, take punishments, show courage and make the right decision QUICKLY are why I want him at the Pies over any other.

I doubt Scharenberg would get past the Dees given they asked for the medical and test results specifically with a view to picking him at 9.

Great work KM, really impressed with your insight into the draftees this year.

You have Freeman going to WC in your latest mock, have WC gone cold on Sheed?

Would Freeman be a better fit in your eyes for WC than Shred, or is it a matter of best available for you at 11?

I would say Freeman would be a better fit. He brings pace to a west coast midfield that lacks speed. West Coast have a lot of similar midfielders to the way sheed plays. However Sheed is the West Australian captain and was the larke medallist. If WCE pass on him and he turns out to be a gun they will look mighty stupid

I agree we lack speed but i think we lack players that have good disposal more than anything. Shuey can give us that speed if he is fit and i would rather surround him with player that have good-elite disposal.

Sheed is a very smart kind of footballer and is exactly what we need.

I think there are a few players we could get with later picks to inject some speed into the midfield.

KM, do you think Tom Cutler could end up being played more predominantly in the midfield?

It's going to be interesting to watch with Cutler where he ends up. Playing as a midfielder will be the hope at his size and with his skillset. If that doesn't work out he probably ends up more a back flanker but optimally he's someone who if he can develop would really be a nice midfielder.

KM, what's your opinion on Jacob Chisari from Pioneers? Does he have a shot, or is he a bit too short? From what I've heard, he had an outstanding year..

Chisari had a very strong season. There just isn't the club interest as evidence by not being invited to the draft combine or even to the state u18 squad. Too many quality smalls and those other smalls ranked ahead of him and something eye popping that makes them stand out ahead of him.

He can make it onto a VFL list though the way he's performed this year.

I know Derek Hine would treat it that way.

It's looking increasingly likely that Brisbane take Scharenberg.

Letting Aish slide to 10 I can't imagine would work either with Brisbane and Melbourne both clubs who could use him.

Collingwood seem sold on Aish and if there is a lock for pick 6 it seems.

KM, is there any chance of Sean Tighe getting drafted tomorrow?

As well as he's performed year after year it's unlikely. He wasn't invited to the draft combine so he's just one of many who will more likely than not need to keep chipping away in the state leagues until a club comes knocking in the rookie draft one year and finally recognises his talents.

Is that your final mock KM?

I'm annoyed I had to take our my 2014 power rankings and draft profiles but to fit all my 2013 content such action was necessary.

I'll be home late tomorrow night from work so unless I update during the day tomorrow after hearing some late news this may well be my final update for 2013.

Not so much gone cold on Sheed as much as intrigued by the scenario Freeman gets through with his pace. He's one of the few I'd label as a Subiaco specialist as someone who has the pace but then will run as far as you let him so I can see him as an eventual selection.

I guess I just don't want my phantom draft looking the same as all the media experts and the positions of Freeman and Sheed specifically early on are by-products of that.

Cripps just took a fair jump in the power rankings. There's a strong chance he's going top 15 tomorrow.

Cripps may well go to Carlton at 13. Lots of clubs like him and if he doesn't go first round then he's going very close to it.

There's a bit of talk the Saints will choose Sharenberg over Billings at pick 3.
I heard something similar to that today. Granted it's no where near a reliable source soto speak (as hes failed so many times) but strange you've heard the same thing.

A couple of guys on our board who have been spot on in the past with trades and drafts both said from separate sources that we'll take Sharenberg. Then apparently on SEN Brett Anderson was less than convincing when he placed Billings at pick 3 in his mock draft. It would really shake the draft up cos the Dogs look committed to Bontempelli, likewise GC with KK and Pies with Aish. So where does that leave Billings?

I mentioned this on the pies board. What is being committed to someone? Last year we would of been committed to someone at 18/19/20 who we didn't pick up cause Grundy slided. Things change. You put your club first before your verbal commitment with a 18 year old kid. And were talking top 10 picks, they are gonna get picked up elsewhere.

To me, Aish looks the better player than Billings anyway. But thats just personal opinion of course.

I guess it's easier to commit to a player the higher the draft pick. They may rank Bontempelli as the second best talent in the draft and knowing Boyd goes to GWS have told him if he's available they will choose him. I'd say GWS are committed to Boyd and have told him so. Likewise Kelly.

Hi KM. Keep up the great work.
In speaking to some of my magpie friends they believe that they are too 1 paced. Which 2 players in say the top 15 would add that much needed pace to the Collinwood list?

If looking purely at speed Nathan Freeman and Lewis Taylor would be the obvious guys if that was your only criteria.

My analysis of Collingwood is too small, too unskilled and too slow.

I look at the list as needing a young premier key forward (McCarthy is only option if Collingwood went this way), a tall strong bodied monster of a midfielder (Acres in my mind is the only option and the best option), a damaging, lightning outside linebreaker (Aish - not lightning but closest thing to this type) and a damaging rebounding defender (Scharenberg).
*Noting that Kolodjashnij and Bontempelli probably aren't available at 6.

If picking I'd take Aish (6) and Acres (10) for Collingwood.

Aish can fill either of the back flank or wing roles and from round one. Acres can add some more size into what will be a very small midfield post Ball/Swan and could play on a flank next year as a stop gap until that midfield vacancy opens up.
Best of both worlds and fills the most pressing list changes.

Knightmare, what is your opinion on Cameron Conlon? Watching his highlights would make you giddy if your club picked him up. Do you see him as a superior talent to McCarthy?
