It might be about to get a lot better if the AFLPA gets their way. They are proposing to change the rules from 8 to 6 years service before one becomes a free agent and for it to be put in place in 2016. It has been suggested the AFL might settle for changing it to 7 years service. IF it is changed to 6 years then it opens up pandora's box as suddenly Gold Coast Suns players are eligible for free agency. You're looking at Dion Prestia, Sam Day, Tom Lynch and Tom Nicholls all becoming available at the same time. Unlike GWS who would have their first go at retaining free agents in 2017 under the proposed change, Gold Coast don't have any extra cap which is going to make it very difficult to hold on to all of their players.

That's always going to be the case. If you looked at the class of 2015 this time last year it would be a much more impressive list, obviously as time goes on more players re-sign.

Updated. No free agents in 2016 for Hawthorn as it stands. Will probably change when others sign one year extensions later this year.
