Looking at the last few years, we have been top four material, but always stumble at the end of the
season.
Is it all the recruiters fault, or can you teach an old Lyon new ideas. Does pride get in the way?
Will next year be any different, what if we actually used more players, rotated, rested, developed
our list, could we dare to dream.
We struggle to land the big fish of the AFL, but is this our only policy for ultimate success?
I'm hoping we take more mature agers in the drafts, it appears they are the only players the
coach shows faith in, kids only get token games, or play due to injury.
Id rather lose more games during the year, knowing we have improved the list, primed for finals
action, than going out in a whimper.

Let's start by saying the club has never been in better position, HB will also make a huge difference, clubs won't no who to tag, Hill, Fyfe, Bennel, Mundy. The addition of two recently retired Hawks players will also be a plus and also Lyon spending time with Clarkson on the Irish tour will be good.
So for all the above I believe we will rest certain players this year, pav, johno, but I believe we will mainly stick with tried and proved as IMO it's win at all costs in 16/17. If Weller for example plays as I believe he can he might be a chance but the rest youth IMO will bide there time unless injuries occur.
Lyon said he was here to win premierships I beleive he has two years to do it. The have backed him in with resources, coaches etc, it's time.

I'm just glad we're not Carlton
Or Melbourne.

Or Essendon.

Or Brisbane.

Or Richmond.

I'd rather be close to success and fall short than not have won a final in 14 years and living on glories of a bygone era.

We haven't been able to beat Hawthorn, something a lot of teams have struggled with.

I think we'll see the rise back up the ladder of Port and Geelong in 2016. Whether that affects our position or pushes others down instead, we'll have to wait and see. But losing to Hawthorn in this era is nothing to cry (well maybe a little bit at the time) or complain about. I still think Lyon has got the best results out of the players available to him the past few years. Alternatively, look at Richmond which I think on paper looks one of the most talented teams but which their (sub-standard) coach struggles to have any success with. I'm glad to have Lyon not only for our benefit, but so that we don't have to play against a Lyon-coached e.g. Richmond or Port.

The players you have listed isn't the point, they are already champions, or are good enough, on their way. What I'm trying to ask, is it the list or the
coaching?
I can see the most improvement with Fremantle with new coaching ideas, development, changing of the assistants proves they know we are missing
something.
Besides Harley, the coach is the only who can really make a difference to our future.

Things that can make a difference to how we go next year (and into the future) -

Coach - game plan, managing assistant coaches, motivating players towards a single goal, tactical changes on game day, a party to overall list management

Football Department - managing the moving parts, the list, contracts, talent identification
Board - allocating and managing financial resources, people, facilities, marketing and membership
Media Team - managing player exposure to media, and mitigation when things go wrong
Assistant Coaches - specialist coaching with midfield, defense, ruck, forward groups, game day strategies, player development
Development Coaches - skills training for young bucks
Match Committee - choosing the right players for the right role, for each game
Leading Teams - facilitating reviews and providing the framework for players to be kept accountable to their decisions
Sports Science - pre-season programs, keeping players 'fit and available', mitigating injury risks, rehabilitation of injured players
Psychologist - establishing a high-performance mindset, dealing with personal challenges, developing mental tools, counselling
Nutritionist - setting an optimal diet for each player, and holding them accountable
Leadership Group - setting standards for playing group, coaching younger players, on-field leadership, managing conflicts
Players - performing to their abilities/capacity, buying in, playing their role, managing their workloads, mindset, recovery, diet, 'outside football' factors, game day decisions on field, picking the right boots

Members
- financial contribution, gameday support (or booing), public forums / discussion (and the impact it has on players)

By no means exhaustive, and there are lots of things outside of football that can impact the team - from the relationships of an individual player putting them off their game (breakup, divorce, death) to a flu, to falling off a stage at a concert or taking a non-approved painkiller...

All teams face the same challenges, and over a season all you can do is your best to minimise and mitigate the risks. My point here is that there's more to determining success than just the coach. The coach is the tip of what is a large iceberg, and ultimately wears responsibility for the decisions made by many others in a large machine.

As an example, I would suggest that Jason Weber is equally responsible for how we started the season, and has contributed to how Fyfe has developed through his role.

Not fair Arcassius, you took it seriously.
