COLLINGWOOD has overhauled its strength and conditioning program but makes no apologies for the massive workload it is pumping into its players.

The club’s strength coach Marty Girvan has been moved on and will be replaced in coming days.

Collingwood has drilled into every aspect of its injury crisis, including the amount of running undertaken, the load put into young players and the type of leg weights players done by players.

But while they believe they will do some things differently, the Magpies are adamant it is short-term pain for long-term pain.

They believed they were not fit enough under David Buttifant and new fitness guru Bill Davoren massively increased their loads in the last off-season

Strength coach you say? I'll apply tomorrow

Knowing the mighty T, I think he will be a great replacement.

In all seriousness, the fitness coach has copped a lot of flack but the strength coach could be the biggest problem to our injuries. I hope we get a solid one this time.

Whilst Davoren's and Girvan program's may have been incompatible,
I fail to see how you can blame someone for injuries this year that have not occurred previous when Buttifant and Girvan were working together.
The change was Davoren.
See it for what it is, a scapegoat and personality conflict.

Our injury list has been woeful since 2011. This year was just the worst occurrence.

Seems we are getting mixed reviews from the club.

Davoren is not under the microscope but the strength coach was just released?

Buckley at the members meeting said on a training scale of all the sides we ranked about 6-12 and that our players were in fact under-trained despite breaking down yet in the above article it say the club makes no apologies for the "massive workload" pumping into the players.

Sounds like nobody has a clue with what they are doing down there.

This year was comparable to 2013, which was only slightly worse than 2012, which was slightly worse than 2011.

Let's face it, Buttifant didn't adjust the training program in line with the sub rule and reduced rotations and it burnt us.

Sounds like Buttifant favoured rest over work and that has been detrimental

You raise the possibility of incompatibility, so why not that Girvan has failed to adapt the new training direction?

Not entirely true. Buckley said the workload was increased, however, it still needed to increase in the coming seasons to get up to speed with the top sides.

Has it really been detrimental though?

Seemed to work for 10+years for us playing on finals consistently and winning a GF- and our players were all at physical peak fitness and strength levels during those years where we were the best side in the comp.

It's obvious we aren't getting it right at the moment with the current regime.

If you read the article Davoren is also under pressure to turn it around next year.

We weren't in 2011/2012 lost a heap of last quarters even in our dominant 2011 year.

Thats all great, but the game changed (sub rule, rotations) and Buttifant didn't keep up with the shift to a more Aerobic style.
