The AFL has the power to commercially protect certain categories, but cars aren't one of them. Beer is (CUB - Carlton Draught) hence no other club having a beer sponsor other than Carlton. Any team can be sponsored by any car company they can convince to fork out the dollars, you evidently don't know what you're talking about.
Not sure if it is worth replying to a 3 post opposition poster, here we go.
Premier partner is Toyota, major partners are CUB, NAB, Coca-Cola and Gatorade. AFL has a policy against clubs or players (in the collective bargaining agreement) from accepting sponsorships with rivals to one of these partners.
Clubs/Players can receive sponsorship, as long as the AFL approves, which means as long as the AFL partner isn't going to crack the shits about it.
One recent car manufacturer allowed was Jeep, to sponsor Richmond. Jeep are an insignificant player in the market, Toyota wouldn't be happy, however, Jeep isn't a major threat to Toyota in Australia.
There isn't much beer competition in terms of advertising because a manufacturer either doesn't have the money to afford sponsorship of an AFL club or it is too large a competitor. Similar with soft-drinks, sports-drinks or Banks. Some clubs have financial institutions as sponsors but they are not major competitors to our big four banks.
Mazda is a major competitor, if they stop sponsoring us Toyota would have grounds to block them from sponsoring anyone else.
All these agreements are a restraint of trade, clubs know the AFL partners pay a premium for AFL sponsorship and protecting of their market, however, Toyota doesn't really pay enough to justify AFL blocking all motor vehicle sponsorship and advertising, they do pay enough to protect them against major competition.
CUB pulled out of being the premier partner because the AFL would not(could not actually) prevent all AFL grounds from selling non CUB beer at football games, Adelaide were selling Coopers I believe at their ground and AFL have no real hold over SANFL or WAFL, at the time.
