Any match between the big 5 or so clubs in Melbourne is bound to be a massive money earner too but duly noted these three matches would add enormous amounts to our economy, still why do they have to directly interfere with the AFL season when they could just as easily be played mid week?

3 matches couldn't all be played during the midweek, so that would almost certainly require those clubs involved to extend their stay at the cost of preparations for their own seasons.

Fact is the MCG had prioritised correctly based on which will make it more money. We're all happy to talk about the AFL being a business now but when a bigger business comes in and makes moves everyone all of a sudden expects the MCG to act like an organisation based around principles and morals rather than money.

Can't have it both ways, suck it up now.

Too right HawkMongrel. Not to mention if the shoe was on the other foot and AFL was encroaching on soccer's territory in a similar vein that all the posters going on about fairness and the AFL not being consulted really wouldn't give two shits whether the FFA or whoever was consulted.

Oh dear....assumptions

valid assumptions, how many times have we heard about soccers "big dawn" only for it to instantly hide behind the clouds again.
how many A-league teams have folded now?

how many soccer fans mention an aussie soccer team as their favorite? the people at the match don't even give a s**t about the game turning there backs on the field, ******* around with those big circles, light flares. it's a day out an event more the a sport

you'd find more soccer fans on george street that could name entire teams including rookies in some euro comp then could name the starting 11 for their local A-league said. nobody care about the A-league. the whole thing would have folded already if it wasn't for millionaires propping it up. It's the australian equivalent of european rugby union.

The league's only 10 years old this season, and its come a long way in that time. Look at the latest TV deal relative to the previous one if you don't believe me, unless you think Foxtel are bankrolled by those "millionaires" as well. You're also confusing the popularity of international soccer with the local game, a lot of people support both domestic and overseas sides simultaneously, they're not mutually exclusive options and its the difference between watching live sport (A-league) and international games (televised). If you don't like the game don't watch it, but at least understand where the game is at the moment before you start talking s**t about it.

A league attendances are growing approx. 10% yoy past 10 years. Its gone from average attendance from 9500 to 14000. A leagues smallest club wellington Phoenix has better average attendance than GWS. A-leagues growth rate is healthy - my only fear is the league is going to be engulfed by foreign players than nurturing local talent. Money is coming into the a-league thick and fast and multi billionaires, sheiks, Russian oligarchs want a piece.

i know exactly where the game is, the leagues ten years old because the NSL fell over. its back by millionaires which has led to teams folding when those buisnessmen stop using clubs to as away to show people how rich they are. media rights were what was it $160 million?

they are playing with a pittance of a salary cap to keep said millionaires bank rolling these teams, because they have been promised profits. hell they are chasing the foreign market to attract a magical "$1 billion dollar" payday, just to attract asian league "stars" and the game still isn't likely to have anything more then one game a week on SBS.

nothing i've stated is false, as i said far, far, far more soccer fans in this country could name clubs like liverpools entire list, before naming the keeper from any A-league team. of course soccer fans attend but they don't really care. the moment the a-league finishes (hell even during the season) the really support is shown with teams from other leagues and code's rather then some Sydney FC gear.

Please stop wasting everyone's oxygen.

Thanks.

Not in Australian though, and last i checked this is still Australia. This crap gets trotted out every time these issues arise. Soccer isnt big here at the pro level, has never been. Yes its great for the Euro FIFO sides, but when they've played their one off games and gone hoe, we're left with a second rate product that even supporters of the round ball code cant be bothered getting behind.
Considering Soccer is bigger in WA than Australian Rules for people 15+ then you consider the NSW & QLD I have little doubt that it wins overall by some margin.

Average attendance last year was 13,000, it was 14,600 in 2006-7.
