After a promising pre-season in 2013 the Melbourne football club finished the year off in 16th position on the AFL ladder. Some good signs throughout the year with Chris Dawes kicking 90 goals for his new side, while co-captains Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove enjoyed stellar seasons with both featuring in the top possession winners for the year. Jimmy Toumpas was solid in his first year after being taken in the National Draft earlier in the year, while Jack Watts found some more game time in the defensive structure. Even though the Demons had only won the 3 games for the year, there were still signs with Mark Neeld as Senior coach that the development is certainly there and on the cards.

The 2013 All-Australian squad has tonight been announced with the Geelong Football club leading the way with 4 announced and with Adelaide, Essendon and Carlton all having 3 players introduced. Some speculation about the All-Australian side this year particularly with it's backline consisting off, Andy Otten (Adel), Nathan Blee (PA), Rhyce Shaw (Syd), Nathan Lovett Muarry (Ess), Harry O'Brien (Coll) and Brendon Goddard (Ess) making the side.
Nathan Blee has a good season in his debut year, but some would speculate about it being an All-Australian type year particularly with the year that the likes of Dustin Fletcher, Darren Glass and Ben Rutten had at full back.

However some legends of the game again won All-Australian honors with Gary Ablett, Paul Chapman, Matthew Pavlich and Chris Judd all got named again for the multiple time. Gary Ablett was named captain of the side with Matthew Pavlich as his vice-captain.

2013 All-Australian Side

HB: Nathan Lovett-Muarry (Ess) - Harry Obrien (Coll) - Brendon Goddard (Ess)

News coming out of Aami Park

Some big news speculating out of Aami Park this evening is that the Melbourne board and members will set a press conference tomorrow morning at 10am, with what many people believe will be the sensational sacking of Melbourne coach Mark Neeld. Neeld who is in his 2nd year of his 4 year contract after taking the Demons to just 5 wins in his first 2 seasons. This could only mean bad things for the Demons with the AFL Gillette trade period coming up and the National Draft, Melbourne will need to find a new senior coach fast if the rumors are true. We'll be back from Aami Park tomorrow morning with the live press conference from 10am

A day in hell - Mark Neeld, Demons coach sacked

After the rumors coming last night that the Melbourne Football club were holding a press conference for this morning at 10am. With the rumors becoming fact. Melbourne have parted ways with it's coach Mark Neeld only 24 months into a 4 year contract. It's a stark reminder of the pressure coaches are under in being judged on one thing and one thing only - winning. Five victories from it's last 42 has spelt out the terms of the Demons' marching orders. Some say they waited too long, while others will think Neeld should have had more time.

The current playing list is mostly noncompetitive. For a club that has had approximately 17 top-20 national draft picks over the last decade, their current position and standing at AFL level in unacceptable. Neeld did try to install cultural and behavioral changes which seemed to meet with some resistance and prompted the departure of senior players, and in others there were some obvious under performers. His elevation of two young men in Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove to the captaincy will no doubt be a decision that will haunt his consciousness for a while.

In the past few weeks alone the club's president Don McLardy and board member Stuart Grimshaw resigned. CEO Cameron Schwab was sacked this season as well.

All eyes will now be on the administration and who had a hold over their strategy going forward. But questions still remain about this playing group and their development. Do they have the talent and desire to yield success? They have a defense that is feeble, a midfield that lacks inside ball-winners, and an attack that has mild potential at best.

Melbourne find their new senior coach

After a few weeks on the look out for a new senior coach and with some big names in the industry including Rodney Eade, Paul Roos and Mark Williams all putting their hand up for the coaching position, the Demons have finally found their man.
But to the Demons faithful either of those names would of been fantastic for the football club and it's future, however none of those "top 3" have taken the top job.

The Demons new CEO Peter Jackson has held a press conference and named unknown Hayden Sumner as the new Senior coach of the Melbourne football club. Now like me, you are probably wondering who this guy is and where does he come from. Sumner had graduated from Monash University in sports coaching and sports management, also doing work experience with the Bendigo Gold in the TAC cup.
Sumner put himself forward for the Melbourne coaching position, up against the big dogs and Jackson said that the youngster had some wonderful visions of where he wants this football club to go in the future.
"He is a young man who has some brilliant ideas. For a young guy, he is really smart and his business side of things are incredible. Sumner mentioned in his presentation, the plan to help the Demons have their own VFL team by 2014 and will push everyting he has in his power to let that happen. He also has vision from the administration department at some changes he would like the club to take in the next year or two, so that the club can have success it truley believes it can have.

Sumner mentioned that the playing list is uncompetitive over the last few years, and believes that he can change the culture around the place so that stars of the competition would want to come to the Demons to play their careers at. Players at the current time would try and escape playing for the Demons at the moment with the club on the end of some big losses over the last few seasons, but Sumner and Jackson insist that, that rein is now over, and the Demons will no longer be the "easy" beats of the competition.

Jack Watts is one Demon to try and find a new home in 2014

Jack Watts, the name that has speculated out in the media this afternoon to have been linked with a move from the Melbourne Football club after the former number 1 draft pick delayed talks with the Demons at the start of the 2013 season. Just 8 months later, Watts has been linked to the Western Bulldogs ahead of the Gillette AFL Trade period in just under a week.

With the news that the Demons have given untried coach Hayden Sumner the Senior position for 2014-2015, Watts has agreed to explore the trade period, and with the Bulldogs firming as his new home, the Demons will now look to strike the best deal available for the talented youngster. High expectations had been on Watts, being named the face and future of the club when he was drafted. But the talented key position player just never really lived up to expectation in Demons colors after being played in multiple positions and never finding the confidence to find great form.

With the Trade period approaching, Melbourne's coaching panel and list management have said the Demons will be active in bringing in talented young players to the club, and doing whatever it takes to bring in players who will win games for the club, even if that means giving up a talented player like Jack Watts.

New Melbourne coach Hayden Sumner had this to say about the possible departure of Jack Watts.
"Yeah it's a difficult one really, Jack is a player who in the perfect world we'd like to keep and play for us in 2014, but there's no harm in him trying the market and to see if we can strike a deal with rival clubs to see which is the best option for Jack and our footy club going forward. He was a number 1 selection so with that, we'd be looking to get a reasonable deal on the table.

Day 1 Wrap

9am: Hello and welcome to the Gillette AFL Trade week with some big names being touted around as potential trade bait such as Melbourne forward Jack Watts amongst them. Watts who came out and delayed contract talks with the Demons early in the season has been officially been granted by the club to explore his options and to see wether the Demons can strike a deal that will suit the club the best if he officially wants to leave the club.
It's going to be a very interesting day with some other names being thrown into the ring with Adelaide spearhead Richard Douglas, Collingwood's Travis Cloke and Carlton's Bryce Gibbs, all big names looking to move clubs throughout the trade period.

11am: First paper work has been lodged by the AFL with the deal being signed and delivered sees Port Adelaide's Brett Ebert being send to Richmond in exchange for Picks 46 & 63.
A veteran of the Power side being shown the door after the Power flooded it's youngsters in 2013 and with Ebert coming towards the end of his career, looks set for a new life as a Tiger.

11:36am: More paper work has come through and we can update you that Sydney have given the Brisbane Lions pick number 30 in the National Draft in exchange for experience but injury prone defender Matthew Maguire. Maguire who started his career out at St.Kilda now finds himself at his 3rd club in the Sydney Swans after a horrid few seasons with injury for the Lions.

1:14pm: A little over 2 hours has passed since the last trade news but we have confirmation that Melbourne and Jack Watts have finally struck a deal. Coming as the most talked about trade of the week, Jack Watts now finds himself at Whitten Oval as a Western Bulldog as the Bulldogs have sent Pick 7 in the National Draft to the Demons for the talented youngster.

1:30pm: A busy day already here on Day 1, but more news have come out of the Melbourne Demons camp with small forward Shannon Byrnes only lasting 1 season on their list with the ex-Geelong premiership player now finding himself at Collingwood after the Pies exchanged running defender Alan Toovey to the Demons. Bit out of left field that one, but Toovey will be a welcomed inclusion to the Demons backline.

3:01pm: A little quieter in the past couple of hours, but we can update you on some more news with Bulldogs younster Tom Williams has been traded to the Brisbane Lions in which has seen Brent Staker join his 3rd club at the dog kennel. Bulldogs fans will be happy to see Jack Watts and Brent Staker join their club in the first day after crying out for a tall forward.

5:00pm: Close of play here on Day 1 of the Gillette AFL Trade period and with 5 deals done on Day 1, how did you see the day? Jack Watts finally found a new home and is now a Western Bulldog as is Brent Staker from the Lions. Tom Williams has been given a new lease on life becoming a Lion, while Shannnon Burns looks set to chase a 2nd premiership with his new club at Collingwood while running defender Alan Toovey becomes a welcomed addition to the Demons back line in 2014. Thanks for joining us, and we'll be back here at 9am tomorrow morning for more AFL trade week.

Day 2 Wrap

9am: Good morning. Welcome back to Etihad Stadium ladies and gentlemen with the second day of the AFL trade period getting underway after what was a pretty interesting start to the week with some big names finding names none other than former number 1 selection Jack Watts finding a new home with the Western Bulldogs in turn for pick 7 in the 2014 National Draft to the Demons. And we also saw ex-Collingwood defender Alan Toovey now finding himself at Aami Park with the Demons on-trading Shannon Byrnes to the Pies in return.
We have some big names still being tampered around as potential trade bait, so we'll take a look at what unfolds today.

10:15am: Didn't take us long in the morning to have our first paper work come through and we believe it is off Matthew White from the Richmond Tigers who now sees himself as a Hawk in 2014, after the Hawks gave up picks 41&68 to receive the talented midfielder. White who was starved of midfield time with the Tigers now heads across town to the Hawks where he'll be looking to get some quality time with the likes of Sewell, Hodge and Mitchell.

10:43am: Another quick trade has come through and a deal done with ex Demon defender Matthew Warnock who was traded to the Gold Coast Suns in 2013 has been shipped off again and this time will see himself playing for Port Adelaide in 2014 in exchange for picks 39 &73. With a flock of talented talls coming through at the Suns, Warnock has given himself the best chance at playing regular senior football and he's hoping he finds that with the Power in 2014.

1:20pm: Ladies and Gentlemen we have big news coming through that a deal has been done which has come out of left field and it involves the Melbourne footy club. Paper work has come through and we can announce that Melbourne have traded Mitch Clark (their prize recruit from a couple of seasons ago) to the West Coast Eagles in exchange for midfielder Luke Shuey. This is a massive massive trade for both clubs with Mitch Clark who is originally from Perth nearly signed with the Fremantle Dockers in 2011, but sensationally made the move to Melbourne. After a great season last year and kicking 53 goals for the Demons, Clark has informed the club he would like to go back home and with that Melbourne made the trade to see midfielder and Melbourne born Luke Shuey now become a Demon. Huge news in what will get the football world talking

What a trade :0

6hmt.jpg

Earlier today we caught up with new Demon coach Hayden Sumner and asked him his thoughts behind the Mitch Clark trade to the Eagles.

"Yeah look in a perfect world we would of liked to have kept Mitch in the end. He is a great talent and him kicking 53 goals for us last year and his partnership with Dawsey in the forward line was one of the best in the competition. It is sad to see the big fella go, but we understand and respect his decision to return home for family purposes. In return we pick up one of the best young midfielders going around in Luke Shuey. As a management team we looked at the best possible scenario for our club with the Clark trade and we elected to go for a young up and coming midfielder who has already spent a few years in the system. He can make an impact straight away. He is a classy outside midfielder who is quick around the ground and his left foot is damaging, something we lack in our current squad at the moment.

Some people would look and see that we traded a gun tall for a gun midfielder, but people have got to realize that in 2014 we get to unleash 18 year old Jesse Hogan into the side. High hopes on this young kid and when we sat down with the management and recruiters we had a little trouble fitting all off Howe, Dawes, Hogan and Clark into our forward structure, we thought maybe the side would be too tall down forward and all 4 of those guys are "too good" to be left out of the side, so in the end it has probably helped our structure that Clark has left with Hogan being elevated to the senior list for 2014. Hogan, Dawes and Howe will take up those forward 50 key position roles, while Shuey will relieve the likes of Jones and Trengove in the midfield".

We also asked Sumner his thoughts on the Jack Watts deal to the Western Bulldogs for Pick 7 in the National Draft

"It's another one of the players that you'd hate to let go. Has all the talent in the world, but the lack of confidence and being played out of position from former coaches wasn't able to get the best out of Jack. Again we can understand his logic and appreciate his team at the football club but he had to do whats best for his football career and we wish him all the best at the Dogs. Former number 1 selection, he'll be a great fit for the Bulldogs who have been lacking a key forward for a number of years and that's where I think Jack plays his best football. But in saying that though, we're able to get pick 7 in the National Draft for the trade and we're excited to (A. Either use that pick to pick up a talented youngster in the National Draft with also Pick 4 or (B. Be able to use that 7 draft pick in a trade to snare another talented player to the club during the Trade period. It's going to be a interesting last couple of days".

Day 3 wrap

9:00am - Welcome back to the AFL Gillette Trade week and what a big couple of days we've had so far. We continue to give you updates and confirm deals here as soon as they come through. A lot of big trades including some big names for the Melbourne Football club including Jack Watts (Western Bulldogs) and Mitch Clark (West Coast) over the last 2 days, I wonder if they'll feature again on day 3. Let's kick it off.

10:56am - Melbourne have kicked off day 3 with a trade coming through and we can confirm that small forward and veteran off the club Aaron Davey has been given a lifeline from the Adelaide Crows with the Demons trading Davey over to West Lakes in exchange for depleted Crow Brodie Martin. Martin hasn't been able to crack into the Adelaide side for over 6 seasons only playing the 20 games, but with the change and new club, maybe the youngster will get his opportunity.

11:13am - Not too long off a wait to get the next deal through which is a big one for the Port Adelaide Football Club. Tall forward Jay Schultz has told the club he wanted out and with that Schultz has been traded to Brisbane in exchange for tall defender Joel Patfull. Both sides
benefiting from this move with the Lions wanting a forward to hopefully take over from Jono Brown in the coming years while Port needed a extra hard experienced body in defense which Patfull will provide.

1:16pm - Melbourne have again been involved in a trade as we have word coming through that the Demons have sacrificed All-Australian ruckman Mark Jamar with a trade to the Gold Coast Suns. Jamar who is in veteran status at the Demons has been traded to the Suns in exchange for young half back Trent McKenzie. A big trade here for the Demons with the premier ruckman being shown the door and with some inexperienced ruckman, Melbourne now look a little light on the ruck options. Max Gawn is going to have to step up to number 1 ruck role for the club while Trent McKenzie will add plenty to the Demons defensive unit with his elite disposal and damaging left foot.

1:43pm - Melbourne have been in the thick of things already this afternoon with 2 trades bringing in Brodie Martin and Trent McKenzie but loosing 2 veteran players in Aaron Davey and Mark Jamar. We also have word coming through that the Demons have saved the best for last in what has been a huge trade week for them.
Bare with us for a season whilst we get the correct details here. We have word that Melbourne and Adelaide have struck a deal again this afternoon which reads the following. Colin Sylvia and Draft Pick 7 has been traded to Adelaide in exchange for Adelaide's captain Nathan VanBerlo and exciting defender Jared Petrenko.
This comes to quiet a surprise from everyone in the footy world with the Demons securing a leader and one of the best small defenders in the game while the Crows have picked up a handy midfielder and selection 7 in the National Draft. A win win situation? Or have the Demons given overs?

Melbourne 2014 Trade review

IN: Alan Toovey, Luke Shuey, Brodie Martin, Trent McKenzie, Nathan VanBerlo, Jared Petrenko

OUT: Jack Watts (Western Bulldogs), Shannon Byrnes (Collingwood), Mitch Clark (West Coast), Aaron Davey (Adelaide), Mark Jamar (Gold Coast), Colin Sylvia (Adelaide)

Melbourne's coach Hayden Sumner comments on the trade period.
In the end the club and myself personally are pretty happy with the trade week period and with the players we were able to bring into the squad. We targeted young players particularly in that 20-24 age bracket with the likes of Shuey, Martin, VanBerlo and Petrenko. Even though they have been champions of the club over many years we wanted to blood some younger players and start a rebuilding phase with the club and even though it's hard to see them go, that was the reasoning behind the departures of Mark Jamar, Shannon Byrnes and Aaron Davey. Both Watts and Sylvia wanted out of the club and we gave them the best opportunity to get to their nominated clubs. Mitch Clark was a very tough decision on the club and the playing group. The club invested heavily in Clark just a couple of seasons ago, but with the tall forward wanting to go back home to WA, we had the opportunity to bring in a talented youngster in Luke Shuey. Shuey, VanBerlo and Trent McKenzie will become welcomed additions to our midfield with VanBerlo bringing a wealth of leadership to the group.

Alan Toovey and Jared Petrenko will help immensely with our defensive structure while Brodie Martin is a bit of a swingman who can play midfield or high half forward, quiet similar to the role that Col Sylvia has now vacated. All in all, club is pretty happy with the week and the players we've bring into the club ahead of the 2014 season, and we'd also like to thank all the players heading to different homes for the wonderful service they've been able to give over their careers.

National Draft Melbourne

Pick 4 - Preston Loscar – Tall Defender – 195cm, 93kg
Preston Loscar is all class – The complete package. He is a rock in defense with the strength to take on the biggest forwards and top notch defensive skills to nullify them. Loscar is elite in his ability to spoil his opponent in a one on one contest, and is excellent at spoiling opponents on the lead. He has reasonable decision making skills, but often lets himself down with poor disposal by foot.
Loscar is going to be a brilliant defender once he get's used to the AFL system and coach Hayden Sumner has hinted that the defender will play some game time in 2014 depending on injuries and form.

Pick 23 – Andrew Pore – Midfielder – 187cm, 92kg
Andrew Dore is an absolutely fantastic prospect and should develop into a fine footballer. He is a powerfully built inside midfielder. Dore has a good enough fitness base to run games out, and is extremely tough at the ground level contest, regularly winning contested possession. He has some pace but is certainly not quick, and often lets himself down with poor disposal

Pick 40 - Tyler Hodson - Tall Defender – 196cm, 98kg
Tyler Hodson is among the top tall defenders in this draft. He is a tall backman with elite defensive skills and enough body strength to remain competitive with most opponents. Hodson is elite in his ability to spoil his opponent in one on one contests and is excellent at spoiling opponents on the lead. He’s big frame can mean he can pinch hit in the ruck if needed.

New Melbourne recruit Nathan VanBerlo has been officially appointed as the Demons captain ahead of the 2014 season with Jack Grimes who shared the mantle in 2013 as his Vice Captain. Under ex-coach Mark Neeld, Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove co-captained the club in which was the discussion throughout the football community as Trengove became the youngest captain in the history of the game and people questioned the direction of the football club and the management with making such a bold decision on it's captain.

With the inclusion of Nathan VanBerlo over the trade period, he was well regarded as a fantastic captain at the Adelaide Crows after taking over from Simon Goodwin but with a younger generation of Leaders coming through the Adelaide Football club in Patrick Dangerfield and Rory Sloane, VanBerlo thought it was best for his football and career to start fresh at a new club and will bring a lot of leadership and experience to this young Melbourne squad.
