Round 6: Saturday 23rd April
Melbourne vs North Melbourne @ MCG
North Melbourne has held off a fast finishing Melbourne side to take victory by 8 points at the MCG in front of 35,698 fans on Saturday afternoon.
The Kangaroos led by more then 5 goals going into the third quarter, before we saw a fight back from the Demons who kicked 6 goals in a fast finishing last quarter, but it was a sealing goal to Matt Campbell that sealed the vitory for North Melbourne.
Matt Campbell kicked the crucial goal as the Demons had got to within 2 points of the Roos with just 2 minutes remaining, before Campbell scored.
The Kangaroos kicked started the match off with a 4 goal opening quarter and lead only by a small margin at quarter time, until they kicked away with a 7 goal second quarter which saw them take a break into half time.
But it was the fast finishing Melbourne outfit that would get the better in the last quarter, but wasn't able to snatch victory.
Melbourne had more possessions, more tackles, won the clearences and won the hard ball count, but still wasnt able to get the victory.
Coach Hayden Sumner had this to say: We just left our run too late in the end. The stats showed that we won everything all over the ground, but yet we still lost the match. What does that tell you really? It's pretty dissapointing in the end, when you win the stats like that, then you should take your chances and get the victory, we'll look back over the week to see where we went wrong, and get ourselves to play 4 consistant quarters of footy, instead of leaving all the work to do in the last quarter.
Other then that though, we'll learn from this and the next time we win all the stat counts at the end of the game, we'll make sure we'll come away with the 4 points as well. There's no point in winning the contested ball and possession count when we cant even kick a score to win us the match.
There is going to be a few changes next week i think, we need more players in the forward 50 to be able to score for us.

Round 7: Saturday 30th April
Richmond vs Melbourne @ MCG
After the dissapointing loss against the Kangaroos last weekend, we have decided to bring in some grunt into our side with Joel Macdonald and Simon Blease coming back into the side to take on the Tigers at the MCG. We have also shuffled around our forward line structure to see if we can kick a winning score on the day. Richmond are going to be hard to beat as they are on their way up after having spent most of the last few seasons nearing the bottom of the ladder.

Round 7: Saturday 30th April
Richmond vs Melbourne @ MCG

Richmond have come out and kicked amazingly accurately to knock off the Melbourne Demons at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night. Richmond amased 23.2.140 in a great display of goal kicking from the whole side, which saw their spearhead forward Jack Riewdolt finish with 8 goals, his best return for the year. Riewoldt and Matt White were the two players who kicked the 2 behinds for the Tigers, but it was an amazing kicking in front of goals, as the Demons kicked 16.6.102 themselves which is very accurate as well.

Matthew Bate returned to form for the Demons and he went head to head with Riewoldt down the other end, booting 7 goals for the Demons in a one man display. It was a great old fashion shoot out between 2 forwards, but it was the Tigers who prevailed with the victory.

The Demons went into half time with a slender 3 goal lead, but it was a huge 10 goal effort in the third quarter which saw the Tigers run away with the match.
That's something we can't allow to happen, we can't let a team be able to take full control of a match in just one quarter of football and let them kick 10 goals to get the edge on us. We had played extremely well up until that point, but we just allowed the Tigers to dominate us from half time on wards. This is something that will come with experience and being able to 4 consistant quarters of football. We dropped off the pedal and we let the Tigers back into the game, and once they got some momentum going, they werent going to be stopped.

I was very impressed and enjoyed watching the shoot out between the two forwards. We dont have much of that anymore in footy, and it was great to see Matty Bate get on the end of a few and kick 7 for the club, his best for his career. It was just a little dissapointing to see Riewoldt up the other end kick 8. Although i was impressed with both our defenders. Frawley had a season high 22 touches and 12 spoils, while Matthew Warnock has continued his good form with 21 touchesand having 7 hard ball gets.
Nate Jones was out major ball winner throughout the midfield this afternoon amassing 32 possessions and laying 7 tackles.

It's our 3rd loss in a row now, and we have to get back onto the track next week and get ready for the Western Bulldogs who are going to be a tough opponent themselves. The season doesn't get any easier as we go on.

Round 8: Friday 6th May
Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs
The Western Bulldogs have moved into equal first on the AFL Ladder with their win against the Demons over the weekend. The Bulldogs join ladder leaders St.Kilda and Hawthorn at the top of the table with 7 wins. The Bulldogs have played a game extra then the two sides currently sitting on top of the ladder.
Melbourne with the loss to the Bulldogs now drop down to 13th on the AFL ladder and join the likes of Carlton, Brisbane, North Melbourne and the Gold Coast all sitting on 2 wins after the 8th round of competition.
Infront of a healthy crowd of 36,540 at the MCG, saw the Western Bulldogs outgun the Demons in the second half which has been a real downfall for the Demons all season.
Apart from the Fremantle game back in round 1, we have started games off very well and at half time we are in the game, either in front or close to our opponents. But once we come out from half time, our pressure drops and the players seem to mentally and physically tire. This is something that is going to take a while to adjust too.
We have these guys on a intense training programme, so that's something that they'll learn to master and be better for it in the long run im sure.

We were smashed in the possession count after half time. The Bulldogs just kept finding the ball and were harder at the contest then our players. 288-416 was the possession count at the end of the match. The Bulldogs just had more class in the midfield with the likes of Cooney, Griffen and Sherman finding plenty of the football. We just had too many passangers today. Brent Moloney tried hard with 26 touches and young Jordan McKenzie was very good as well, but that's another loss for the club and now we slip down to 13th position on the ladder after a promising win against the Dockers at home in Round 1.
The bye certainly can't come quick enough for us, as we need to do a season review as a coaching staff and look at areas where we went wrong over the first half of the season

Round 9: Sunday May 15th
Melbourne vs Hawthorn @ MCG
This is going to be a really tough contest coming up against the Hawks who are sitting on top of the ladder undefeated after 8 rounds of the AFL premiership season. We hope to get as many supporters as we can to this match and watch us take on one of the best teams in the AFL and see where our team is at compared to a premier side.
We have made the two changes to the side this week with exciting forward Liam Jurrah expected to miss the next 3 weeks through injury, while Simon Blease has been omitted from the side. Lynden Dunn and Colin Garland come back into the side which gives us a bit of height around the contest with Garland helping out in defence.
We have also changed our structure around a bit. Jack Watts will start on the half forward line, probably going to do a job on Buddy Franklin or Jarryd Roughead. It will be a big learning curve for the kid. Jarred Rivers wil start forward, as will Luke Tapscott who has played all season in the back pocket.

Round 9: Sunday May 15th
Melbourne vs Hawthorn @ MCG
Hawthorn has moved up to equal First on the AFL Ladder with a 32 point win over the Demons on the weekend. Melbourne who has lost their last 5 matches, will travel to Adelaide to face the bottom of the ladder Port Adelaide side, while the Demons are looking for their 3rd win of the season.
In front of 37,219 people at the MCG, Melbourne once again played some good football in the first half and only trailed by 15 points at half time, before the Hawks kicked 6.3 in the third quarter while the Demons added 2.3 for the term, which blew the game wide open in Hawthorn's favor.
Buddy Franklin proved to be the match winner kicking 6 goals in a pretty dominant display, Jarrd Roughead finished with 3 goals, while for the Demons defender Jared Rivers was trialed up forward and finished with 3 goals, while Matthew Bate continued his good form, kicking another 3 goals, taking his season tally too 23 goals after having missed rounds 4 and 5 through injury.
Hawthorn smashed the Demons in the possession count at the end of the game amassing 413-282. Hitouts were a domination by the Demons though with Mark Jamar leading the AFL in hitouts having 36 against the Hawks.
Colin Sylvia (33) and Jack Trengove (28) both played really well and got plenty of the ball, i was also very impressed with Lynden Dunn's game, he had 28 possessions and had 11 clearences as we played him through the midfield this afternoon. Jared Rivers provided a target up forward for us kicking 3 goals as we had to try something in the forward line to produce a winning scoreline. Rivers provided a target, so he might just pinch hit up forward every now and then once Jurrah is back in the side.

Round 10: Friday 20th May 2012
Port Adelaide vs Melbourne @ Aami Stadium
This is certainly one game we come over to Adelaide with a bit of confidence from our weeks training and facing the Power who currently sit on the bottom of the AFL ladder. But it's going to be a very hard match just like every week is in the AFL. We have two changes to the side this week with Max Gawn and Colin Garland both out of the side that lost to the Hawks by 34 points last weekend. Clint Bartram and Jamie Strauss come into the side with Strauss starting as the sub, and Bartram will come in and provide plenty of run across the half back line.

Round 10: Friday 20th May 2012
Port Adelaide vs Melbourne @ Aami Stadium
The Melbourne Demons have recorded their 3rd victory of the 2011 season with a 39 point win against Port Adelaide at Aami Stadium on Friday night.
The Demons led by their Captain Brad Green who had 37 possesions, 23 of those handballs, 9 un-contested marks, 10 tackles and 6 hard ball gets led from the front to give his side their 3rd victory of the year.
Melbourne led in every stat at the end of the match, something they have struggled to achieve in 2011. Possessions 316-378. Tackles 47-67. Clearences 21-37 and the most important stat of them all according to coach Hayden Sumner: Hard Ball Gets: 23-50 in favor of the Demons.
Our players were really hard at the ball and the contest tonight. We were first to the ball on many occasions and then flicked it out to our runners who kicked us forward. We started off the game well, which we have been doing all season, but we continued on after half time, an area we have usually dropped off, but instead kicked 8 goals in a big third quarter for the club, and we didn't stop their. We knew we had our hands on the win, but we wanted to win big and kicked another 6.0 in the last term to run out 39 point winners.
Brad Green as i mentioned was sensational for the club, led from the front and had many contributors. Nate Jones, Col Sylvia and Brent Moloney were all great through the midfield picking up big possessions, Ricky Pettered was great forward picking up 28 touches and kicking a goal, while Joel Macdoald and Jack Grimes both had 28 touches from the back half.
Jack Watts stood out this afternoon and had a great game in front of the goals icking a season high 5 goals for himself without having a miss. While Tom Scully played more up forward instead of through the midfield and kicked 3 goals, while Grimes, McKenzie and Lynden Dunn all chipped in with 2 goals apiece.
Melbourne players, coaches and fans were all up and about after the win away from home against the Power, which is the Demons 3rd win off the season, which started off in round 1 against the Dockers, and then beating The Brisbane Lions and now taking the scalp of the Power in Adelaide.

Round 11: 29/05/2011
Melbourne vs Carlton @ MCG
Another game at the MCG this weekend. After coming off a good win away from home, the Demons travel back to Melbourne to face Carlton who sit below the Demons on the AFL Ladder.

Melbourne could make it 2 wins in a row with their match against the Blues, but the Blues will be looking for their 3rd win of the season.
It's going to be a very intense battle through the midfield with the likes of Gibbs, Judd, Murphy, Moloney, Sylvia and Jones.

melbournedemons1.jpg
Round 11: 29/05/2011
Melbourne vs Carlton @ MCG

Carlton has come away with a handy 41 point win against the Demons at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. The Blues who have had a dissapointing start to the 2011 season got their game together and knocked off the Demons who had some confidence beating Port Adelaide in Adelaide a week earlier.

Carlton who have been seen in the eyes of the public to play finals football this year, have only won the 3 matches, the same as Melbourne who are struggling and sitting 12th and 13th on the ladder respectively.

Carlton got off to a blistering start in the opening quarter and that's where the game was won and lost. Carlton came out on fire, dominating possession and kicking scoreboard pressure, kicking 7.2 in the first time, while the Demons could only manage 4 behinds for the quarter, and from their on in, it was going to be a long way back for the Demons.

A 41 point loss against a club that has had a dissapointing start to the half of the season was dissapoiting from our players. They just had so much more clean footskills then us and we turned the ball over far too many times. We had more tackles, clearences were even and we even had more hard ball possessions but yet we still go beaten and got beaten comfortably. This shouldn't happen against a side that is struggling.

Tom Scully is starting to get better as a all rounded player. Last week he kicked 3 goals and helped us with the win, this week we played him more in the midfield and he was our leading possession getter with 30 touches. Ricky Petterd is having a good couple of weeks, with another 28 possession game from him and he is starting to cement his spot in the current 22, as he was in and out of the side at the start of the year.
Our Forward line is starting to function together pretty nicely, but we are relying on two-three players a match to kick us a winning score. It's not enough in this game. Matthew Bate kicked another bag of 5 this afternoon and takes his total to 28 for the season, while Jurrah came back into the side after injury and casually kicked 4, while Watts who bagged 6 last week, chipped in with a handy 2 goals this afternoon.

Pretty dissapointed with the result considering we were playing a side who had expectations to play finals but yet were sitting 15th on the ladder, two positions lower then us before the game started. And we also won most of the stat counts at the end of the game and to be beaten by a big margin like 41 points in unexceptable from this team who had a good win against the Power last weekend. We have a big challenge this weekend against the reigning premiers in Collingwood, so this week we'll find out where our players sit in the AFL

Davey knocks up 150 for Melbourne
Now what seems to be a veteran of the Melbourne football club, Aaron Davey has reached 150 games for the club. Davey who was pick 3 in the 2003 Rookie Draft, originally from the Northern Territory runs out for the Demons in his 150th AFL Match.

The 28 year old has been a great servant to the Demons forward line, with his electric pace and goal sense around the forward 50. Some say he hasn't lived up to his hype, but the Demons inside say that Davey has been a successful part of this side, and stilll has years left in him. Along with those 150 games, Davey has kicked 163 goals next to his name which takes him 10th on the Melbourne all time leading goal kicking, just behind Brian Wilson and Cameron Bruce now at Hawthorn.

Davey mad an impact as soon as he played with the Demons kicking 28 goals in his debut season, 30 the year after, and 37 his best effort in a season in 2006. Davey thus far in 11 games in 2011 has kicked 16.9 and is an important leader for the football club.

So on behalf of the coaching staff, i say congradulations Aaron for reaching 150 for the Melbourne Demons

Round 12: Saturday 4/06/2011
Collingwood vs Melbourne @ MCG - Queens Birthday
Queens birthday weekend. Monday match against the Magpies is always a huge match on our season calender. Melbourne and Collingwood have proven to be great rivals in recent times. We always have great contests against Collingwood, and we are hoping with a extra day break we can put up a good show against the Premiership side in the competition.
We have gone with a pretty familiar side, and we will be hoping to get a win for Aaron Davey who play his 150th game for the club this weekened. Here's hoping for a close contest, and a Demons win

melbournedemons1.jpg
Round 12: Saturday 4/06/2011
Collingwood vs Melbourne @ MCG - Queens Birthday
Collingwood and Melbourne has showed a classic match at the MCG in their Round 12 clash on the Queens Birthday holiday. Melbourne really took it up to the Premiers of last season, but it was the Premiers who would get the four points with a 2 point win in front of 65,433 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The game was even throughout the whole contest, and the scoreboard never got out to a 2 goal lead for the whole game, so credit to both sides who didn't allow the opposition to get away for a lead. It was a even contest in the first quarter which saw the Pies lead by a point at quarter time. Which then lead to a 7 point lead for the Pies at half time, but credit to the Demons who have kept up with the Pies who are pushing for a top 4 position if they got the win this afternoon while the Demons are struggling down the ladder with only 3 wins for the season.
The story of the year has been the Demons keeping up with sides and playing good footy for the first half, but then dying in the second half and loosing comfortably, but not this afternoon. Melbourne played some quality football, and Collingwood just had every answer to the Demons attacks. A 8 point 3/4 time lead saw the Pies have the edge, but it was setup to a classic finish.
A high scoring last quarter was a highlight. Liam Jurrah kicked 2 goals in the quarter to kick start his team for the fight back, and it were the Demons who kicked 6 goals in the last term, but the Pies had the answers like the whole match, with 5 goals of their own.
Liam Jurrah had put the Demons in front with 1.30 remaning up by 4 points, and the Demons had flooded their numbers back, it was going to be a huge upset if they could pull it off.
Collingwood won the centre clearence through Ben Johnson who banged the ball deep into their forward 50. A scrimage and a ball up was in place. All bar 2 players were inside the Collingwood forward 50 for this contest, as Melbourne tried to conjest the area, Jolly won the hitout and tapped it down, another scrimage. 45 seconds to go by the time this second ball up took place, Jolly again won the tap, and goal sneak Leon Davis picked up the ball and got a quick kick away which sailed through for a goal, Collingwood snatch a goal and put themselves up by 2 points with just 40 seconds to go.
Collingwood flooded their numbers back, but it was Collingwood who held the ball through the middle of the ground and snatched victory out of the Demons grasp with a 2 point victory. A classic on Queens birthday.
Melbourne coach Hayden Sumner said he was very proud of the groups efforts this afternoon. It was my first match as a coach where the game was this tight. It was intense. The boys played extremely well i thought, although we didnt get the win, i am extremely happy with the result, because we know when we string our game plan together and have every player contributing, we can match it with the competitions best and can take victory. It was down to the wire, and it took the Pies till the last 30 seconds to take victory away from us. It was a good 4 quarter effort from the guys and everyone should be proud with the way they played, its just unlucky about the result as we would of loved the confidence and the 4 points against the Pies.
Clint Bartram played one of his better games for the club, having 27 touches while Jones, Moloney and Sylvia battled hard all through the match. Aaron Davey had a pretty quiet 150th, finishing with 15 touches and kicked 1.1.
Liam Jurrah is finding some good form with another 4 goal performance while Jack Watts, Trengove and Nate Jones contributed with 2 goals. It's good to see with Bate not having an impact with have Jurrah and Watts who can score goals, and Max Gawn who will come back into the side this weeked also can kick a bag.

Brent Moloney suspended for Kicking offence

Moloney showed in the video reference seen kicking Collingwood midfielder Dane Swan whilst Swan was attacking the football in their Queens Birthday clash on Monday. The Match review panel said that Moloney's actions were a dissapointment as we are trying to cut out the violence in AFL matches, and said that Moloney had a brain fade against the Pies.

Moloney's case is listed below

+ 225 base penalty points
- 56.25 points deducted for good record
- 42.19 points for an early guilty plea
TOTAL of 126.56 points
= 1 week suspension

He will be a big loss for the Demons, as he has been great through the midfield so far this year, throwing his hard mature body around the contests and picking up plenty of possessions.

melbournedemons1a.jpg
Clint Batram injures ankle at Training
Melbourne Defender Clint Batram who came off a season best game against the Pies on Queens Birthday on Monday will miss the next weeks match against West Coast after injuring his ankle at training throughout the week. Coach Hayden Sumner said that it was a minor sprain which will only see Clint miss this week's match and will be right and ready to go next week.
Bartram enjoyed his best game against the Pies last weekend, so he and Moloney who got suspended will be big outs for the club who face the Eagles in Melbourne this week. So we will be forced to make a few changes this week. Good news is that ruckman/forward Max Gawn is available after a 3 week suspension.

Round 13: Sunday 12/06/2011
Melbourne vs West Coast @ MCG
After a fantastic Queens Birthday match and some incidents inluding a suspension to midfield Brent Moloney and a ankle injury to Clint Bartram throughout the week, the time has arrived to face off against the West Eagles who are travelling along very nicely sitting in 7th position on the AFL Ladder.

Melbourne who lost by 2 points against the Pies last weekend will have their confidence up knowing they can match it with the compeitions best when they put their best football together. West Coast have to travel to Melbourne which will give the Demons a big of an edge.

Neville Jetta has been recalled to the side with some good form in the VFL, while Joel MacDonald is back in the side for the Demons which gives them a hard nose over the ball in the absense of Brent Moloney.

melbournedemons1.jpg
Round 13: Sunday 12/06/2011
Melbourne vs West Coast @ MCG
West Coast have overcome the critics about not playing well in Melbourne with a 48 point win against the Demons at the MCG.

The Eagles with their 7th win of the season moves into 7th position on the AFL ladder with their win against the Demons, while Melbourne sits on 3-10 and are sitting in 14th position just about Brisbane, Sydney and the Gold Coast on the ladder.
West Coasts tall forwards proved to be a handful for the Melbourne defensive unti, with Quiten Lynch and Josh Kennedy combining to kick 8 goals between them, while Nic Naitanui was dangerous with 3 goals himself. Shannon Hur was very good off the half back line with his power kicking a highlight and bombed 2 goals from 50, along with his 23 possessions.
For the Demons it will be back to the drawing board for the coaching staff. Nate Jones was good with 32 possesions, while Ricky Petterd also played a great game with 30 touvhes. Jack Watts is finding some good form which is going to be expected frmm the number 1 draft pick picking up 22 touches, laying 9 tackles and kicking 2.2 for the afternoon.
Melbourne now travel up to Sydney where they face the Swans who are sitting 16th on the AFL Ladder with 2-10 record. It's going to be a good contest, one that the Demons may feel like they could win if they bring their best footy

Tough luck against the pies.

Two quick questions, do you sim the games or manage them?
2. With a poorish start to the season are Melbourne looking at bringing people in for next seasons and if so who?

melbournedemons1.jpg
Round 14: Saturday 18/06/2011
Sydney vs Melbourne @ SCG
The Demons travel to Sydney this weekend to face the Swans in their Round 14 clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Melbourne has made no change to the lineup that saw them loose to West Coast last week, while the Swans look to get their 3rd win of the season, and while Melbourne are looking for their 4th. It'll be an intense battle between the two sides who are both struggling to find any form throughout the year.

Both sides will be eager for the win as they would fancy themselves against the opposition, but it will be the best side on the day that will take home the four points.
Melbourne will be without Brent Moloney for another week as the midfielder injured himself at training and will miss this weeks game with a ankle injury after he missed a week through suspension.

Fan centeral
With a poorish start to the season are Melbourne looking at bringing people in for next seasons and if so who?
That's a tough question. As coaching this side you can see the talent that we do have. We need to develop this side and play to the players strengths. Jack Watts is a prime example of this. We have tried him all over the shop so far in the first half of the season, forward, back, midfield. He does however suit better as a forward, so we'll develop Jack in the best way possible as a forward.
Our players will take time, as most of our players are 23 and under. So we might look at bringing in some players around 25-26 next year in the trade just for that extra experience in this young side. Green and Jamar are the two older players in this group.
I think in the trade/off season we need to look at getting a quality defender. Frawley and Rivers just aren't big enough to take on the likes of Cloke or Brown each week. Someone like Hurley, Rutten will be a great get for us, but we know we'll have to give up a lot to get what we need. Our midfield is fine. Moloney, Jones, Sylvia, Trengove and Scully are our future. The forward line is a bit of a worry as well. Jurrah, Bate and Watts are our main targets, but are all inconsistant for the time being. This will change however in development. Max Gawn hasnt played the last 4 weeks through suspension, but he will be a big target up forward for the future.
So yes, i think there will be a fair bit happening trade week in the off season, but we will bring in some good kids through the draft as well, taking it we keep going on our loosing ways and have a top 3 draft pick would be handy.
And i am simming through the games, but changing the way we play (tactic) wise each match
