Brownlow Medal 2011
Well done to Chris Judd who has been named the 2011 AFL Brownlow Medal winner. Judd won the medal with 4 votes over the Skipper of the All-Australian and St.Kilda sides in Nick Riewoldt. Judd who wasn't named in the All-Australian side this year proved to be the fairest player awarded by the umpires for the second time in his career.

Judd played all 22 games for the Blues, racking up his best figures to date. 696 possessions and kicking 15 goals. His insperation that he brings to this Carlton Football has been enormous since crossing over from the West Coast Eagles.
Now at 28 and at the prime of his career, Judd is deservidly winner of the 2011 Brownlow Medal

Melbourne Trade Week
Trade 1: Loose: Austin Woonaemiri to Sydney Gain: Shane Mumford

Trade 2: Loose: Clint Bartram to Richmond and Gain: Mitch Morton

Trade 3: Loose: Luke Tapscott and Pick 19 to Adelaide and Gain: Daniel Talia

GAIN: Shane Mumford - Mitch Morton - Daniel Talia
LOOSE: Austin Woonaemiri - Clint Bartram - Luke Tapscott and Pick 19

Hayden Sumners comments

You know Trade week is pretty hard. A lot of time is spent with other coaches and getting to know what key area's we needed to work on over the season and see if anyone from other teams would suit that missing link that we needed to be a better side. We believe the 3 players we picked up in Trade week can all help us out in good ways.

First we pick up Shane Mumford from Sydney. Mumford was a good get for us, Mark Jamar is nearing the end of his career and certainly won't be around much longer. Mumford is only 25 and will be starting to hit his peaks this or next year. Which gives him a year to develop our style and be able to take the number 1 ruck role after Jamar has left the club, then we can still have Max Gawn as the second ruck option and forward option.

The next we targeted was Mitch Morton. Out of favour at the Tigers with the likes of Nahas, King and Riewoldt as the focal point down their. Morton has plenty of talent, and is 25 still. Pretty young and has a bit of height and a good leap about him. And after loosing Wonnamiri earlier in the day to Sydney, we thought that Morton would help us out in the forward line and bring in a bit of experience to help out the guys like Bate, Jurrah, Gawn and Watts.

The last trade we made for the week was to get Young Centre Half back Daniel Talia to the club. Huge wraps on this kid from the Adelaide camp, and with Nathan Bock heading to the Gold Coast, it was up to Davis and Talia to fight it our for the position. Unluckly for Talia though, he seems behind Rutten, Davis and even Otten at this stage, so we wanted to give him a lifeline. The kid is only 20, and we see a lot of potential in him to be our Centre Half Back for the next 10-12 years. Very excited about Talia being at the club.

But of course we had to get rid of players to get players.
So we wish all the players that got traded away from the club all the best for the rest of their careers. Austin Woonaemiri will love Sydney and the surroundings. He was a good asset to our forward line in 2011. Clint Batram will benifit going to a club that is struggling for small defenders in Richmond. Batram played most games for us last year, but seemed to have been on the outer with some of his team mates. And Luke Tapscott also felt like a change, even though he was one of our better players throughout 2011 playing every single game of the season. But he will benifit as well playing with the Crows who are a team on the rise, and with Reilly, Doughty and Johncock all coming to the end of their careers, Tapscott will fit in nicely down there.

2012 National Draft
Melbourne Picks
Pick 2: Ryan Wimblett (Midfielder) 17 yrs - 187cm - 85kgs
Pick 21: Conner Hewitt (Small Forward) 18 yrs - 180cm - 80kgs
Pick 38: Marc Local (Midfielder) - 19 yrs - 182cm - 88kgs
Pick 55: Carlos Ibbitson (Tall Forward) - 19 yrs - 197cm - 96kgs

Ryan Wimblett went at pick number 2 for the Melbourne Demons and is a super prospect. He is a powerfully built outside midfielder, who can push forward and kick goals. Wimblett is pretty slow across the ground, doesn't have the pace but is extremely damaging by foot and rarely misses a target. He has an elite motor and will wear down opponents, but is servicable at best at ground level. He has reasonable decision making skills, and is deadly accurate shot in front of goals. (Plays like Dale Thomas: Collingwood)

Connor Hewitt went at pick number 21 for the Melbourne Demons and is all class-the complete package. He is a crumbing small forward. Hewitt has exellent agility, and is a deadly accurate shot for goal. He possesses exceptional break away speed, and it extremely damaging by foot and rarely misses a target. He has reasonable decision making skills, and is a reasonable mark on the lead. (Plays like Lindsay Thomas: North Melbourne)

Marc Local is an absolute fantastic prospect and should develop into a fine footballer. He is a powerfully built outside midfielder, who can go forward and kick goals. Local is a smooth mover with good pace, and reguarly finds a target with good footskills. He has a good enough fitness base to run games out, but is servicable at best at ground level. He has reasonable decision making skills, and is a reasonably accurate shot for goal. (Plays like Matt Priddis: West Coast)

Carlos Ibbitson is an exciting player with strong upside. He is a strong key forward who presents competitively. Ibbitson is an elite mark, pulling down contested grabs that very few can take, and is a very good mark on the lead. He has reasonable decision making skills, and is an average shot for goal (Plays like Nic Naitanui: West Coast)

Pre Season Draft
Melbourne Pick
Pick 2: Clancee Pearce (Tagger) - 21 yrs - 182cm - 90kgs
Clancee Pearce has only played the 14 games for the Fremantle Dockers in the past 3 seasons. Didn't get a game at all last year, and we think he could become a very good player within our team as a tagger. We already have Jordie McKenzie that takes the best midfielder each week, but if we can fit Pearce into the mix as well and also be able to shut down another good midfielder or even a damaging forward, then he will be a great pick up from our Pre season pick.

Rookie Draft
Pick 2: Max Price (Midfielder) - 19 yrs - 187cm - 86kg
Pick 19: Spencer Grimsdale (Small Forward) - 19 yrs - 186cm - 89kg
Pick 36: Jason Warrender (Midfielder) - 19 yrs - 183cm - 86kg
Pick 53: Jaden Melrose (Ruckman) - 18 yrs - 201cm - 98kg

Max Price would be welcome addition to any team. He is a powerfully built outside midfielder, who can go forward and kick goals. Price is very slow across the ground, but is extremely damaging by foot and rarely misses a target. He has an elite motor and will wear down opponents. He often runs into trouble due to poor decision making. (Plays like Nathan Loveett-Murray: Essendon)
Spencer Grimsdale is a good all round player without many visable weakness in his game. He is a livewire small forward who will quickly become a crowd favourite. Grimsdale has good agility and is a reasonable shot for goal. (Plays like Andrew Embley: West Coast)

6 new players are putting on the Melbourne jumper in the Round 1 clash against the Tigers at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. Daniel Talia ex Crow will start in the back pocket, but will no doubt be looking to get to one of the Tigers tall, maybe even Jack Riewoldt, some very exciting times ahead with this 20 year old kid.
Max Local will start off the half back flank, while Mitch Morton is getting a run with the Demons, being an ex Tiger himself, wasn't getting much opportunities.
Shane Mumford starts forward for the Demons as well, knocking the spot from Max Gawn as the foward to pinch hit in the ruck with Jamar doing the bulk work of the ruck work. Conner Hewitt and Clancee Pearce the ex Fremantle tagger, will begin on the interchange for the Demons

Round 1: Sunday 8/03/2012
Richmond vs Melbourne @ Melbourne Cricket Ground
round3t.jpg

Melbourne and Richmond kicked off the 2012 season at the Melbourne Cricket Ground . In front of a healthy 39,366 fans at the G, Richmond kicked of their 2012 season with a victory over the Demons who again struggled to perform on the big stage.
After finishing in 16th position last season, the Demons have made a few changes to their squad, but still weren't able to get the result against the improving Tigers outfit.
Richmond got off to a pretty good start in the first quarter kicking the first 3 goals of the match, before the Demons hit back with 2 of their own.
The match was a lot tighter then you think come the second term, where the game really started to be an arm wrestle, with the Demons clawing their way back down to a 7 point deficet.
Only 2 goals seperated the two sides at the three quarter time break and with the Demons still trailing, they needed to dig deep in this last quarter to secure a victory. but it was the Tigers who kicked into gear with a 5 goal last quarter, with the Demons only kicking the 1 goal for the term which saw the Tigers run away with the victory in Round 1.

Considering loosing the matchh by 33 points, the Demons dominated play with a huge difference in the disposal count, beating the Demons 423-271. A huge difference, but it just shows that Melbourne were wasteful with the ball and their disposal was very poor.
Melbourne also chased hard which is a good sign when they didnt have the ball in their hands with a 74-37 tackle count, leading their way.
For the Tigers their forward recruit, Jay Schulz who made the switch from the Power stood up and kicked 5 goals to relieve the pressure a bit from Jack Riewoldt who finished the game with only the 1 goal. Dustin Martin and Dan Connors finished with other majors for the Tigers, while their skipper was best on ground picking up 32 possessions.
For the Demons their goal sneak Aaron Davey toppled the goal kicking with 3 goals, while Matthew Bate kicked 2 from Centre Half Foward.

Brad Green and new pre season recruit, Clancee Pearce were the best on ground with 30 disposals each, with Scully not far behind on 29.
The Demons new recruits, as their were plenty of them in this first round of the season did pretty well. Pearce as we mentioned was great picking up 30 possessions, and laying 4 tackles. Mitch Morton was very good off the half forward flank picking up 20 touches, and kicking 1.1
Daniel Talia was pretty good in defence having 15 possessions, laying 5 tackles and having 6 contested possessions, with Conner Hewitt who made his AFL Debut was very good with 15 possessions and having 4 clearences. Also for the Demons Max Local had a more quieter game with 7 possessions and 5 rebounds from the defensive 50, while the more dissapointing story of the day was Shane Mumford, who had been talked up to be a great pick up for the Demons, stuggled, only had the 2 possessions, although amassed 21 hitouts which is a promising sign.

Melbourne Forward struck down with Injury

Melbourne head into the Second Round of the 2012 season with a few injuries heading into the week of training. Forward Liam Jurrah is expected to miss the one match with a ankle sprain he sustained at training in a marking contest.
But the more serious is Jack Fitzpatrick who hasn't played a game for the Demons, but is a young and upcoming star for them, has suffered a AC joint and is expected to miss atleast 6 weeks of football which will slow down his development.

Ricky Petterd and first gamer Max Local have both been omitted the side which lost to Richmond last week, and we will see another first gamer this weekend with Number 2 draft pick, Ryan Wimblett been given a run for the Demons and he has been named off the half back flank.
Jack Watts formely a number 1 draft pick has come into the side to suspense of the out of Liam Jurrah and Sam Blease who finished last season on fire comes into the side and has been named as the sub, the position he played a lot last year.

Melbourne vs Carlton @ MCG

Melbourne notch up 1st win of Season
round22012.jpg

The Melbourne Demons have won their first match of the 2012 season coming in the second round against the more favoured Carlton Football Club at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday afternoon.
A big shock loss no doubt for the Blues who had been backed by most punters and all the money had been on the Blues, but the Demons took the victory as an upset to start of the season. Maybe this is what we can expect from this Demons side in 2012.
The Demons who led for the entire match, just came away with a 9 point victory considering having a 6 goal lead at three quarter time, before the Blues hit back with a 4 goal last term, as for the Demons who only managed the 4 behinds, but it wasnt enough and Carlton run out of time to run short by 9 points.
The Demons started well kicking to a 2 goal lead at quarter time. Their midfield, Grimes, Green, Moloney and Jones had plenty of the ball in the first term. A high scoring affair in the second term from both sides was a spectical to see with a 6 goal term for the Demons, and a 5 goal term from the Blues saw the Dees take a 16 point lead into the main break.
Brad Green had 22 possessions up until half time, he really showed that the old legs still have plenty of Football left in them, while Clancee Pearce continued his good form having 17 possessions in the first half of football playing on the ball.
After half time, the Demons came out firing and added another 6 goals to the tally in that third quarter, which saw them go out to a 6 goal lead heading into the third quarter, but in the end it was just a 9 point victory to the Demons, but a wins a win and they would be happy to get their first for 2012.
Carlton seemed wasteful with the ball and their disposal in the 2nd and 3rd term, as they had a disposal count of 388 to the Demons 316. Carlton won all the stats apart from the Inside 50's which the Demons were ahead by 2, and seeing those stats you would of thought the Blues should have won, and won comfortably.
Brad Green, the Demons veteran showed his class and that he can still play high possession football with a huge 37 possession game, with 5 hard ball gets and 7 inside 50's continued to his name, one of Greens best for the club.
Clancee Pearce is proving early on to be a sensational pick up for the Demons in the Pre Season draft, picking up 32 possessions after his 30 last week, while also claming 6 tackles for the club.
Young Connor Hewitt was very good off the half back flank with 19 possessios to his name and had a tough 5 clearences from the centre bounces.

Number 2 Draft pick Ryan Wimblett played his first game for the Demons and had a solid game. Wimblett finished with 11 possessions, laid 3 tackles and kicked 2 goals on debut, considering he started the game off the half back flank.
So the Demons pick their first win of the 2012 season with a 9 point victory over the Blues at the G, and some of their youngsters are showing some very good signs early, Pearce, Wimblett, Connor have all done very nicely in their first games for the club.

2 Demon stars set to miss 4 weeks

Melbourne have had the nail hit on the head this week with Serious injuries to 2 of their key midfielders in Brent Moloney and Jack Grimes.
Grimes who Captains this Melbourne club injured himself in the win against Carlton on the weekend but will miss the next 3-4 weeks with a fractured cheekbone. Grimes played out the match against the Blues, but scans on the Monday showed the young Captain will need to miss 3-4 weeks at minimum.

Brent Moloney is the other out for the Demons as he was subbed from the ground on the weekend only having the 6 possessions to his name until he injured himself. Moloney grabbed for his shoulder in a tackle against Brock McLean on the weekend, and knew soon that he done little damage to his AC joint and he too will miss around a month of Football to get himself right.

Not the 2 players you wanted to miss a month of footy for the Demons, its a huge loss, but its a great opportunity for other players to come in a fill the role left by the 2 stars of the club.

INT: Conner Hewitt - Brad Green - Lynden Dunn
SUB: Colin Garland

IN: Lynden Dunn - Colin Garland
OUT: Brent Moloney (AC Joint) - Jack Grims (Fractured Cheekbone)

Round 3 and we head to the Sydney Cricket Ground to face the Swans who sit in 15th position up until the Round 3 match. Coming off a very good win against the Blues last weekend, we have been hit pretty hard with injury, with Jurrah 2 weeks ago, and now Moloney and Jack Grimes all missing from this side, but we do have some good depth to cover those players. Colin Garland and Lynden Dunn get another run for the club with the absence of the 2 midfielders.
A very even contribution last weekend from all 22 players, so we are looking for the same against a struggling Sydney outfit this weekend. I am looking forward to seeing Clancee Pearce stamp his mark on this game as he is getting quality game time through the midfield, and we get to see Young duo, Connor Hewitt and Ryan Wimblett in action again, so we'll montor those and see how they go.

Round 3: Friday 25/03/2012
Sydney vs Melbourne @ SCG

Sydney finds an extra gear to overcome the Demons
melbvswans22012.jpg
The Sydney Swans have come from behind to take victory from the Demons at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday Night Football. The Swans who trailed by 1 goal going into the last term, came out and kicked 7 goals in the last term to come away with the Victory by 5 goals in front of a home crowd of 32,102 fans.
The Swans got off to a firing start in the first term, by kicking 6.3 in the opening term, while the hapless Demons could only manage 1.1 for the term, with the affects of Moloney and Grimes not being in the midfield for the Demons as the Swans midfield got on top early with Kennedy and Craig Bird having plenty of the ball in the first term.

Melbourne hit back as they aslways would with a big second term, kicking 6 goals while the Swans managed 2 for themselves which saw the Swans go into the main break leading by 12 points.
Another big quarter was shown by the young Demons, who again kicked another 6 goals in the third quater, with Jack Watts providing plenty of scoring up forward, which then saw the Demons take the lead for the first time in the match and led at threee quater time just by a solitry goal. However this is where the crowd of 32,000 strong got behind their team and saw their team kick 7 goals in the last quarter to come out with a 5 goal victory. 3 goals to new recruit Justin Westhoff proved to be the match winner for the Swans in the last term, with speedster Lewis Jetta and Ryan O'Keefe botting 3 goals a piece.
It was a great come from behind win for the Swans who led for most of the match, but to the Demons credit, got in front and made it a contest for 3 quarters atleast. The slow start killed the Dees.
Jack Watts finished with 4 goals for the visitors, while Matthew Bate the other multiple goal scorer kicked 2.
Josh Kennedy had the most disposals on the ground with 35, while Craig Bird provided plenty of run and carry through the centre with 32 touches of his own.
New Swans recruit, Justin Westhoff finished with 6 goals, his best return for his new club, while Will Thursfield was good for the Swans as well picking up 21 touches.

Scully, Nate Jones and Colin Sylvia all had plenty of the ball for the Demons, however they were smashed through the clearences, a place where Moloney and Grimes have been starring in this season. Connor Hewitt had another solid match with 17 possessions, while Number 2 draft pick, Ryan Wimblett had a very tough job on Rhys Shaw who ran around the kid picking up 30 possessions, while Wimblett only managed to have 2 touches, one game he would wanna forget.
Sydney win their first match of the season while this loss has taken the Demons down to 15th on the ladder at the current time.
