If it wasn't for Ben Merrett (Southport Sharks - Son of Roger) missing out on most of the season due to Osteitis Pubis, he would have gone in the Father Son rule to Essendon. He's a FF who had a good end of season but not enough I guess to get picked up. Anybody know anything more?

I spoke to him at the Essendon v Lions game at Cararra earlier in the year...

He wants to play for Essendon - not Brisbane - and the club seemed keen for him to come down during the season to train with them, look at the facilities, etc. Not sure if he did this, but hopefully they're still interested!

Last time I heard Roger talk, he sounded a lot more pro-Essendon than Brisbane. I suspect he harbours a bit of resentment at being given the arse (more recently).

He can't hold anything against us anyway as he left.

What kind of moron leaves a club for more money and better weather anyway?....oh, I do apologise roger.

Ben is 17 years old. He played in the Qld State Carnival, was looking good for State Selection then broke down with groin problems. Only played half a season. He's a great mark and a great kick at goal.

I don't think the Lions will push too hard for Ben to go under F/S. Not worth 3rd round pick. So they’ll let his wish of going to Essendon complicate matters for the Dons. Next year as it's already been said they'll have Gary Fould's son as well to consider. To get them both need to give up 3rd and 2nd round picks in the "Dream Draft". Not likely to happen.
If the Merrett's have been pushing the Essendon line, it's not very smart politically. Considering the status Merrett Snr. has at the Lions and the fact that the club's B&F is named after dad.

I tell you what we'll draft him, put ********loads of money and time into his development and when he's just about ready to repay the faith and enter his prime your club can come in and take him off our hands for bugger all. It will be just like old times. ;)

I like it.

Don’t they say, “History repeats it’s self”
Sorry for the clichés

Just a bit of background family history. Ben Merritt's dad Roger played for us in 2 flags. Ben's mother is a passionate Essendon supporter and his grandfather Reg Burgess was an outstanding centreman in the 50's for the Bombers. I'm surprised to read he is prepared to move to Melbourne to play rather than stay home in Brisbane.
Roger's departure from Windy Hill in '86 was catastrophic for us. Cost us a flag
or two. He was almost beatified in Brisbane - so popular was he with the supporters, he carried that fledgling club on his shoulders.
Then he got involved in club politics, missed out on the coaching gig, upset a few people, and was out on his ear !
Then Roger applied for an assistants role at Essendon, but missed out.
Acker loathes him.

Does anyone know what position he has been playing at southport and what size he is?
193cm 80k Full Forward (mostly Reserves due to his groin problems this year) Played some senior games last year. He turned 18 this year.

Der, only the evil Melbourne clubs do that to Brisbane.

That's so funny! Look guys, the kid can play footy. His Dad isn't that involved with Ben's decision. The kid wants to go to Essendon, they've been telling him that they want him and with not much romancing from Brisbane to sway him, Ben will most likely be a Bomber next year. He's also a good ruckman, like Dad!

If Ben Merrett were to get Drafted, especially through Father-Son, I would be absolutely shocked. He is an ok player and one day should play good consistent football for Southport but that is about it. He was not injured at the U/18 State Championships and didn't even make the initial QLD U/18 Squad of 30. He will be 19 in just a few short months also, and would need to improve DRAMATICALLY in the next 12 months if he were to even be looked at.

Struggling to work out precisely where the whingeing by Essendon supporters has been happening. A few comments, but no whingeing.

I assume you meant whingeing, and not winging.

I can clearly see that.
If you can see that, you may like to apologise to Marcuz (Marcuz's post clearly had tongue in cheek flavour) and the Lion supporters for making a goose of your self and opening your mouth before your brain cells cranked up?

Put a little harshly, but a fairly accurate assessment of where he's at
