Hey Matchu , drove past Metricon on Friday and noticed construction beginning on parcel of land direct opposite where the bastketball stadium is atm , have any ideas what it could be ??
scroll up the page to post #662 in this thread, it's gonna be a massive sporting complex. double story driving range, 9 hole golf course (remaining i think), tennis courts, soccer fields.

New theme park near Metricon on the cards.

Good pick up. It would appear from that article that Premier Palaszczuk went into bat for the Gold Coast after the Chinese developer began to lose interest in the site. I know their interest in the project began to wane when they weren't awarded the next Gold Coast casino licence but politicians often have a way of talking billionaires into doing something through other means or maybe she went as far as to promise him a casino licence in the future should he continue to build in Queensland.

I think this particular project is exciting. It says it would include a water show, wave pool, indoor ski centre, skating rink, vintage car museum, houses and apartments, if it ever goes ahead. Could you imagine going skiing on the Gold Coast! I have no doubt a project like this would help the Suns even more (it's less than 1km from Metricon) and push the case for a light rail extension from Broadbeach to Nerang. Who knows SUNS, he may even build that multistory car park you've been praying for ;)

It's always funny reading the comments section on those GC Bulletin articles. People always seem so anti-development until it's built and they realise it was actually a good idea all along. Then they enjoy the benefits and stop complaining haha.

I know exile has already answered this but I thought I better clear something up. The area directly opposite the basketball stadium is the new home for Gold Coast Soccer which will of course include soccer fields and a clubhouse. Next to that project to the north is Carrara Gardens who are currently redeveloping their land. So it wouldn't be hard to confuse it and think it's one massive project but they are actually two separate projects that are going at the same time. It's definitely boom time on Nerang-Broadbeach Rd at the moment and its all thanks to the Commonwealth Games.

I will just park at the new theme park and walk up :p

Better yet, buy an apartment there!

They really need to build a footpath on the Metricon side of Nerang-Broadbeach Rd. The theme park would only be about 200m or so away from the Nerang railway station and is located just off the M1 so its easily accessible to the public. Certainly more accessible than any of the current GC theme parks.

Carrara Sports Precinct update from 6 October 2015:

And this one is for Donble:

You can see the three soccer fields being built across the road from the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre. You can also see the Carrara Gardens clubhouse in the bottom right and if the picture went a bit further you would see the tennis courts being built there currently.

A nice video that explains what will happen to the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre (CSLC) in legacy mode (post Comm Games). The two halls will hold 15 basketball courts and 11 netball courts in legacy mode. So it would appear that one hall will be designated to Gold Coast Basketball and the other will be for Gold Coast Netball. They also plan to hold volleyball and futsal activities in the building. All that is coupled with the Suns' new training facilities (weights room, indoor pool, training oval etc) so it sounds like it'll be a very important piece of infrastructure for several Gold Coast sports going into the future.

The guy in the video explains that the lifespan of the CSLC is predicted to be 50-60 years. That's really good news for the Suns. I'm not entirely sure what that means for the Carrara Indoor Stadium as it currently houses Gold Coast Basketball but I'm sure we'll find out in the near future.

I suppose the most surprising thing was how high off the ground those halls are. I'm going to estimate at least 3 metres. I also found what looks like drainage equipment being installed on the north western corner:

I guess this is how they'll try to deal with flooding. Still no work on the Carrara Indoor Stadium:

And, lastly, an update on the Carrara Gardens redevelopment. You can see the new club house being built with Metricon behind it. I suppose they are just laying the foundations for the tennis courts at the moment:

Did you take these yourself? Keep up the good work - I'm loving the updates!!

new article up on the bulletin website this morning.

http://m.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/n...rara-development/story-fnvizjmv-1227573512146

a 7/11 & red rooster complex has been proposed for the dream centre site just further west of the tennis academy construction site.
That's good! I assume it's going to be one of those all-in-one servos like you see next to major highways, but regardless, it'll be a great new addition to the area. I really hope someone comes and invests in parking though.

I understand the issue with traffic and congestion following a game, but until there's actual infrastructure connecting surrounding areas to Metricon people are going to want to drive instead.

I assume with the lifting of the whole thing due to flooding that the underneath will become car parking for staff and players?

This MEGA deal doesn't make sense, as its reported for these reasons
  • Port would give up 2 1st rounders to get pick 5, but they could just give us those picks and the deal would be done
  • We wanted 2 first rounders but in this deal would accept just 1.
I smell BS
Wrong thread bud

a 7/11 & red rooster complex has been proposed for the dream centre site just further west of the tennis academy construction site.
Great news. That Red Rooster will probably get smashed every time an event is held at Metricon and they'll be loving life as a result. The important thing here is that it's within walking distance (I'd estimate 700 metres) of the stadium. I've always thought the area lacked restaurants within walking distance and it appears that problem is about to be solved. The Dream Centre is literally right next to the new development at Carrara Gardens and over the road from the planned theme park so it'll be a somewhat scenic route to Red Rooster. I wonder what Gaz thinks about the church being turned into a fast food restaurant.

I believe that's the plan but what if the car park floods? Maybe the drainage system they are putting in place is designed to avoid any flooding altogether. Either way, the actual training facilities in the CSLC won't flood which is good. The whole sporting precinct has cost in excess of $300 million so you'd like to hope that nothing floods.

It should also be noted that there are rugby fields on Alabaster Dr next to the new soccer fields being built.

Yeah good idea , does'nt look like they have elevated it much either , so these floods will affect.

i hope they go easy on the seasoning with there chips, nothing worse then red rooster chips being over seasoned

A car park can act as a detention basin and flood provided it is has mitigation measures to protect loss to life(usually warning signs, evacuation stairs and warning sirens). Looking at the fact it hasn't been elevated to protect it from minor flood events however indicates to me that it is unlikely to act as a carpark and the 3m elevation would likely just be the 100year flood level + the freeboard

You can see these plans below that the photo posted above with pipes underground is in fact going to become a water retention basin. There will also be a smaller water retention basin installed on the other side of the lake. It appears that the tin sheds will be handed over to the City of Gold Coast council in the future as well.

So this:

Will stop this from happening:

Matchu any guesses as to what 'FUTURE COGC FACILITIES' stands for? it's on that plan a few posts up in the area where our tin sheds are at the moment.

Doesn't it stand for City Of Gold Coast, as part of the re-branding the city did with the whole Gold Coast red full-stop thing last year I think it was? No idea what they will store there though.

city of gold coast does make sense.

and you know what? if that's true, that location could be used for a ferry port down the track, i reckon!
