Looks like a residential project dressed up for the town planners to me
The plans and renders do seem very vague. I'd like to see a list of what it's actually going to include. $3 billion is a lot of money to spend and it almost looks like there is a miniature Jewel tower at the front of the project. A cultural centre with an Asian theme doesn't really tell us much...

the proposal above looks very enticing! the idea of a "world cultural centre" does seem pretty out there...

no idea what it would actually be though. i wouldn't even know what to compare it to. anyone?

They'll be trying to put all the residential in towers above the high water mark no doubt ;)

The frame for Hall 1 of the CSLC is virtually complete now. It looks like a large structure. Much bigger than the basketball stadium next to it.

The Gold Coast News just ran a story on the Suns new $22 million training and admin facilities.
  • Current training and admin facilities are demountables next to the stadium.
  • The club will move into the new facilities in October 2016.
  • It will bring the whole club together under one roof for the first time ever.
  • The top level will be the admin section for up to 80 staff with a balcony and cafe.
  • Players will move into a high performance gym below with physios at their fingertips.
  • A three lane-25 metre lap pool, recovery baths and medical facilities will be included in the high performance gym area.
  • A second training field lined with synthetic grass will be created behind the facility.
  • It will be used during the 2018 Commonwealth Games and can be hired by visiting teams in a range of sports from netball to rugby sevens.
  • Andrew Travis - "Now we can genuinely look our players in the eyes and say we've got the best facilities of any club in the AFL."

******* mint. Operation destination club underway.
I'm sure the current players will appreciate the upgrade from demountables to world class facilities. I find it interesting that the synthetic field will be outdoors, because they are usually indoors. Adelaide's and Essendon's as examples:

Perhaps it's to do with the climate on the Gold Coast and the fact that it doesn't rain anywhere near as often as it does down south? I'm not entirely sure. However, now that the whole area is becoming a sporting precinct, I thought it would be interesting to compare it to a world class sporting precinct like the one Manchester City has built:

So how does it compare? Let's have a look...

High quality stadium? Check.
Plaza area for fans? Check.
Nearby public transport? Missing.
Pedestrian bridge? Missing.
Academy and youth field/stadium? Unsure.
Car park? Check.
Secondary training fields? Check.
High performance centre: Check.
Administration facility? Check.
Lecture theatre/media facilities? Check.
Elite training field? Check.
Recovery pools and baths: Check.
Medical/health facilities? Check.

There really isn't much missing. In an ideal world you'd have a tram stop out the front of the stadium along Nerang-Broadbeach Rd but, with the exception of that, it virtually has everything a world class sporting precinct requires. Combine these facilities with the Gold Coast climate and you can see why sports teams from around the world will be lining up to hire out the facilities.

Best facilities of any club in the AFL.. Obviously he isn't including Collingwood and Hawthorns future head quarters??

Or is it actually the cream of the crop?

Thought the same. 'Best facilities in the AFL' is laying it on a bit thick. Off the top of my head, it would bring us level with Essendon and the Crows. Collingwood still has better facility IMO and Hawthorn are about to get on that level or beyond.

For a small club it's probably the best, but this is just bringing us up to where a lot of clubs are already.

Figured as much.. Jeez he must think Queenslanders are stooped and live in a bubble saying half the s**t Travis says.
Not a very big fan of his, I'll admit.

also worth noting, the carpark for the existing basketball hall has been torn up. not sure how long ago that was done though.
Good eye. Nice to see they've started work on the public pedestrian plaza that will be located in front of the CSLC and the indoor stadium. From the render below it appears it is going to be mostly concrete and grass patches with a focus on specific trees such as the line of palm trees out the front of the CIS and CSLC. It doesn't get much more Gold Coast than a line of palm trees haha.

If Griffith University didn't offer a high quality running track then I think this would be a much bigger issue than people are making it out to be. Do the tenants of the Carrara Sports Preinct really need a running track? Probably not as much as they need several synthetic training ovals. If it's a choice between one or the other then I think it's pretty obvious they are going to remove the running track post Games.

Also, they've started laying the turf in the southern soccer precinct. It looks about half done:

Matchu do you know where this warm-up track will be located in the precinct? It appears that the pros of taking the track down far out way the negatives. It would be pretty cool to have a running track, but like you said, I can't see it being necessary with the one already at Griffith and the lack of athletic events on the coast.

I think this is what the precinct is supposed to look like in Games mode:

If that render is correct, the running track will be placed around the synthetic oval at the back of the CSLC. Then the precinct will look like this post Games:
