Yea no dates . I did find an artist impressions of the stadium and it must be said that the demountable building are gone and in it's place is a warmup track for athletics
Is it this one from another angle? You can see the big screen has been moved in that impression.

Indeed you can. Also the training fields in the top left corner..

On a side note, doethe solar panels generate enough power to supply the stadium on game day?

I have heard Gold Coast Athletics will move to Carrara once the training fields are completed.

The website claims the solar panels produce 20% of the total energy required. Still a lot better than other stadiums across Australia.

Hey Iva Bigun, thought this was relevant to our debate before about the state government's spend when it comes to roads.

Coomera Town Centre approved but Westfield could refuse to build after State Government funding snub
THE Gold Coast’s largest planned project has been finally approved but only a fraction of it can be built because the State Government is refusing to fund road upgrades.

Gold Coast City councillors yesterday ended 18 years of negotiations by ticking off approval for the $500 million first stage of the Westfield centre at the Coomera Town Centre.

But rather than push ahead with a massive shopping centre featuring a cinema, two-level department store and artificial beach similar to Brisbane’s Southbank, Westfield will be restricted to a department store, supermarket and some retail outlets because the Newman Government won’t commit to upgrades to surrounding roads.

And Westfield is furious about it.

A source close to the giant retailer told the Bulletin: “I do not think Westfield would consider the centre a worthwhile investment with this sort of cap in place. This is the biggest project the council has approved in several years but this cap on development could put the brakes on.”

A Bulletin report in January, using Right to Information, revealed the continuing arguments between the Government and the developer about road upgrades.

While Westfield sought for the upgrades and interchanges to be completed by 2017, in time for the Commonwealth Games, the Government had a timetable of 2021.

Sydney-based Westfield development executive George Arena attended yesterday’s council planning meeting and said the timing of any development would be subject to negotiations with the Government.

“(The restriction) does not give a lot of latitude for development so in terms of what we would build, you will probably not see a critical mass,” he told the planning committee.

“We must speak with the Government to understand the timing to deliver a substantial centre, rather than restrict this to a small-intensity shopping centre without the interchange upgrade.

“We will have to make our assessment of the situation but we will work with the state to see their timing of the interchange in order to deliver the full scheme.

“Everything takes time and the proper assessments have taken place, so we are satisfied with the outcome.”

The project is expected to create 1200 jobs during construction and 1600 permanent jobs once the centre opens.

Under the approval, just 20,000sq m of the 93,320sq m site can be developed until the Newman Government spends more than $495 million to upgrade nearby Foxwell Rd.

These will cost $120 million for the first stages and another $90 million to be completed, along with $90 million for the northern interchange, $140 million for the southern Motorway connection and $55 million for extra works.

Acting Mayor Donna Gates said she had “grave fears” the upgrade of the intersection, and the rest of the town centre, could be delayed by years because of the Government’s budget position.

Coomera councillor and city planning boss Cameron Caldwell said the ball was in the Government’s court.

“We know the interchange is under extreme pressure and perhaps the approval of this will be the catalyst for the Government to free up capital to allow its progression,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said the department was finalising planning for the road upgrades.

“We will consider the funding once that has been completed,” she said.

Coomera MP Michael Crandon defended the restriction and said he would lobby his LNP colleagues to fund the roadworks.

“I have been lobbying exit 54’s duplication since I got elected but you have to understand we have Labor’s debt to deal with,” he said.

The committee’s decision will go before the council on Tuesday.

Last time I bring this up. Promise.

I've said this before but I really think they should look into extending the roof as a part of the redevelopment. You can see in the picture below that the dotted line shows the areas that are protected by the roof. Around half of the bottom tier on both the southern and eastern sections aren't protected but that would be easily fixable by just extending the roof.

Lets go ALL OUT,

Blue section represents grandstand seating and underneath is Gym and high performance centre

Yellow is football dept and Admin offices

Red is Social club and Restaurant (backing on to the Nerang river with floor to ceiling glass to highlight the views of the river in the foreground and the spectacular high-rise of Broadbeach and Main beach in the background (unique from any other stadium), This (restaurant)could be used during games as the high flyer area (like the long room at the MCG) and on non game days a open to the public dining experience. Plus what a money maker this could be during concerts

Considering this development would be potentially 3 stories high, much more could be made of the area than just my initial ideas above (third floor could be a open to air beer garden). What would you add?????

I really like your ideas. One thing that needs to be considered here is that there still needs to be a path all the way around the stadium so patrons walk around. I think that was one of the big things when it came to stadium design because too many stadium don't let you walk all the way around. Anyone who has been to the Gabba knows exactly what I'm talking about around the BCG members area. So perhaps a hall way for the public on the ground level with plenty of tv screens so people don't miss the action.

I think you could also make it almost an extension of the current square corner area on the right of the picture below. You could just use the exact same design and rotate the square corner by 90 degrees so it gives the illusion of half a square. One of the biggest issues really is the location of the northernmost light tower. It's so awkwardly positioned and would be so much better off being located about 50 metres west of where it is. I know the cost would be enormous but the long term benefits would be massive in terms of spare land that could be used for the grandstand/training and admin facilities.

I really like the idea of building a three storied area that overlooks the Nerang River and the Broadbeach/Surfers Paradise/Main Beach skyline. I guess the biggest obstacle with these ideas is that we are thinking about a permanent upgrade while the state gov is set on a temporary upgrade. You want to get a permanent upgrade right because there is no going back once it is done. If it was to be considered for a permanent upgrade by the time constructions starts, I would be pushing hard for that light towers to be moved.

Also, if it were to be built next to the Nerang River, it would be easily accessible via the ferry terminal, once it is built. This would work out well for tours of the stadium for tourists who travel by ferry on days that games aren't being held. Plenty of money to be made with through stadium tours.

Matchu It could also potentially house a museum of sporting memorabilia like the MCG and Adeliade oval or a state centre of athletic excellence, the options are endless.

I hear your issue with the light tower, I think they would probably build around it as they did with the SW tower but this is a bit of a pipe dream so if money was no object I tend to agree with you.

I can imagine offices in the new development overlooking either the oval or the river, it would make an attractive place to work and no doubt help us attract and retain the best people.

Something like this may not happen in my life time but the Gold coast has a can do attitude and I could see something like this happening sometime in the future

I think a museum/sports memorabilia area is a great idea. Could you imagine how attractive it would be for patrons if you had premiership cups/other Suns memorabilia in front of you, the oval to the right and the Gold Coast skyline to your left? Not to mention potential cricket trophies (when we get a BBL team) and memorabilia provided by hosting the Commonwealth Games. SUNS might have to give Karmichael's boots back for the good of the museum :p

I suppose you could build around the light tower and they probably will just to make it aesthetically pleasing. We can only hope that something like this is a possibility because Metricon is already one of the most unique grounds in Australia so adding these ideas would make it amazing while also increasing the capacity to 35,000-40,000.

Get excited Suns fans... a western extension of the light rail could be coming and a stop at Metricon is in the plans!

Western light rail link connecting Nerang and Broadbeach is back on track
A WESTERN light rail link connecting Nerang to Broadbeach is back on track, with State MPs backing the push ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

A proposal for an 11km east-west spur line running along Nerang-Broadbeach Rd tothrough Carrara, Metricon Stadium and Nerang railway station has been revived by Mermaid Beach MP Ray Stevens, putting it in competition with the proposed Griffith University-Parkwood link.

A northern link connecting Griffith University with a heavy rail station at Parkwood is under investigation by the State Government and the Gold Coast City Council and has been costed at $435 million, including construction of the new station. No costing has been determined for the Nerang-Broadbeach option.

In a speech to State Parliament last week, Mr Stevens said the proposed link would be “ideal for transport”.

“This is a workable, financially feasible proposal because most of that route is over flood plains, which are not built on and could be easily covered by a raised rail line,” he said.

“This is the most achievable solution because the heavy rail has ground to a halt at Varsity Lakes because of its major alignment issues, as well as the difficulty of acquiring land.

“There is no budget or planning to take it any further and given the current financial straits we are in, we do not have billions to spend on it.

“It is not the ideal solution but it would do something achievable because anything else in the next decade is extremely unlikely.”

Mr Stevens said a heavy rail link to Coolangatta, expected to cost more than $2 billion, had become an “impossible target”.

A light rail link connecting Nerang with Broadbeach was first suggested in 1999 when the system was first proposed but was abandoned more than 10 years later and declared “unfeasible”.

The 13km first stage of the system between Griffith University and Broadbeach will be completed and accepting passengers from June.

Public transport advocacy group, Rail Back on Track, spokesman Steven Jamieson slammed Mr Stevens’ Nerang-Broadbeach proposal as a “brain explosion about infrastructure he does not understand”.

“The population density between Nerang and Broadbeach is small so you will never get any real patronage, except for during the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

“The only way to make back money on an investment is to get people on board and you will not get that between Nerang and Broadbeach.”

Yes! How good would this be?!?!?

Catch the tram to the footy. We are really are becoming a footy city haha. So we'll have the bus, tram and maybe the ferry as ways to get to Metricon in the near future. Exciting stuff!
It would certainly increase crowd numbers. I would actually be very surprised if both (tram and ferry) were to be built before the Commonwealth Games but I think there is a decent chance one will happen in the next 4 years and I would have thought the ferry option is the more likely of the two. Everyone that has been to Metricon Stadium will tell you that the transport is simply not good enough so it would be really interesting to see what would happen if it became more accessible. Perhaps a permanent upgrade to Metricon Stadium wouldn't be too far-fetched if the upgrade in public transport increased crowd numbers substantially. We can only hope at this point.

The AFL should definitely step in and help support the idea of a western extension to Metricon. Perhaps investing a bit of money like they did with the stadium to make it a reality.

More good news for developments in the Metricon area with the casino looking like it may become a reality! Just needs to beat out the Broadwater submission.

Nerang could be site of new casino
NERANG on the Gold Coast could be the site of one of Queensland’s new casinos.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney on Tuesday revealed the companies vying for the three licences being offered by the State Government and where they’re proposing to build new “world class integrated resorts”.

A total of 12 consortia have paid $100,000 each to register their interest in the process.

The government set the non-refundable fee in an effort to ensure only “serious contenders” took part.

Six of those have their eye on the Queen’s Wharf site in Brisbane’s CBD including Echo Entertainment, James Packer’s Crown Resorts and the New Zealand-owned SkyCity Entertainment.

Other contenders include the Far East Consortium and Chow Tai Fook Joint Venture, Lend Lease and Greenland Investments.

The remaining six are seeking to build casinos elsewhere in Queensland including at Yorkey’s Knob north of Cairns, Airlie Beach, a site 26km south of Proserpine, Great Keppel Island, and the Broadwater and Nerang on the Gold Coast.

Mr Seeney said the government was committed to establishing developments that would be “drawcards for domestic and international visitors and provide employment for thousands of Queenslanders”.

“From this list, my department will now prepare a shortlist of consortia who will be invited to move to the final stage of the process,” said Mr Seeney.

“Short-listed parties will then be asked to provide fully-fledged proposals for evaluation in late 2014.

“The final stage of contract negotiations is expected to run into early next year.”

Mr Seeney said the list of development consortia released today will be further refined later this year when the process enters the Request for Detailed Proposals stage.

“Under the close eye of Probity Adviser Len Scanlan, my Department will now consider the EOI applicants announced today to prepare a final short-list by the middle of this year,” he said.

“That is when we will ask short-listed applicants to begin preparing fully-fledged proposals for submission by late 2014.

“The final stage of contract negotiations is expected to run into early next year with a decision on who will receive licences expected by mid-2015.

“While this process has a way to run yet, it’s clear many share the Queensland Government’s vision to create resort facilities that will provide a significant boost the State’s economy now and well into the future.”

The following parties have submitted formal Expressions of Interest to develop Integrated Resort Developments with associated gaming licences in Queensland:

Queens Wharf Brisbane

1. Crown Resorts Ltd

2. Echo Entertainment Group Ltd

3. Far East Consortium/Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Ltd (joint venture)

4. Lend Lease

5. SKYCITY Entertainment Group Ltd

6. Greenland Investment Pty Ltd

Regional Queensland

1. Aquis at the Great Barrier Reef Pty Ltd — Yorkeys Knob, north of Cairns

2. China-Australia Entrepreneurs Consortium Pty Ltd — Airlie Beach

3. Fullshare International (Australia) Pty Ltd — 26 kilometres south of Proserpine

4. GKI Resort Pty Ltd — Great Keppel Island

5. Eastern Success Group Pty Ltd — Nerang, Gold Coast

6. ASF Consortium Pty Ltd — Broadwater, Gold Coast

Further information on the Queensland Government’s Integrated Resort Development process, including evaluation criteria is available at http://www.dsdip.qld.gov.au/integratedresorts

Jewel developer proposes massive riverfront casino just east of Nerang railway station
A CHINESE consortium is seeking State Government approval for an integrated resort and casino at Nerang, which it rates as a safer and superior entertainment destination than the tourist strip.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney yesterday announced details of 12 bidders that had submitted expressions of interest for three new casino licences.

Premier Campbell Newman last December indicated one licence would be given to the Queens Wharf development in the Brisbane CBD and two others in regional centres.

Ridong Australia, through its Eastern Success Group, is one regional bidder, with the ASF consortium and its Broadwater Marine Project the other from the Gold Coast.

Ridong is behind the Government-approved $1 billion Jewel development in Surfers Paradise but few details are known about its proposed Nerang project on a massive riverfront site just east of the railway station.

The 44.89ha site was settled late last year for $22.88 million, with Ridong Australia representatives suggesting it could become a signature project and rating it among the Gold Coast’s most ambitious developments.

Property insiders confirmed DBI Architecture had created the design for the integrated resort but rejected speculation that the city’s tallest tower, at 100 storeys, would be part of it — as originally planned.

A property analyst said: “This is a $3 billion project. It’s three times the value of Jewel. It is designed to give the Gold Coast a real nightlife, a wholesome market, as opposed to the current offer — in other words, Surfers Paradise.

“It will be traditional Chinese and contemporary architecture. It’s going to be the story of China from a commercial point of view. This will be a place where Australians can do business with the Chinese.

“There will be a world trade component … it obviously meets the Government’s criteria.”

Planning experts suggest the site is “extremely problematic” for several reasons, including flooding.

Some MPs and councillors believe a casino will not be a good fit for Nerang.

Area councillor Bob La Castra, when told about the bid, said: “I’m gobsmacked that anyone would want to build a casino here or why it would even be on the cards. I honestly hope it is an April Fool’s Day joke, because I can’t believe it would happen.”

Gaven MP Alex Douglas agreed with concerns about flooding issues but said the project would boost employment for the city’s west.

“I do not believe a casino would fit with Nerang’s character and the land would be better used as a high-density housing development,” Dr Douglas said.

Mayor Tom Tate welcomed having “two horses in the race” for a regional casino licence and was looking forward to seeing the proposal.

“I have no preference for location but Nerang is the geographic centre of the Gold Coast and if they believe it is the best case to go, then the business case to the Government should be interesting,” he said.

So if anyone can't be bothered reading those articles or researching the topic further, there are a few interesting things to note:
  • The casino will be a $3 billion project.
  • The three new casino licences will be handed out in mid-2015.
  • The only competition for the Nerang project is the cruise ship terminal that incorporates a casino.
  • The site is 44.89ha in area and is located 1km from Metricon Stadium.
  • The project will have a Chinese theme.
  • It will be adjacent to Nerang train station.
  • It is located on flood plain which complicates the situation but you'd think they could work around it with $3 bilion to spend.
It'd be huge for the Suns if this were to go ahead. Not only would tourists have a really nice hotel to stay in near the stadium but it would almost definitely result in the light rail getting extended to that area. Not to mention a really great place to go to before and after games. Hopefully this happens.

Hope they build a casino with a decent poker room. Brisbane and Gold Coasts casinos are an embarrassment when it comes to poker

The old poker room downstairs at Jupiters was decent but they didn't get enough people to keep it going. They appear to be prioritising the Chinese market so I'd imagine there would be plenty of Baccarat tables.

I found this particular part of the article interesting:
A property analyst said: “This is a $3 billion project. It’s three times the value of Jewel. It is designed to give the Gold Coast a real nightlife, a wholesome market, as opposed to the current offer — in other words, Surfers Paradise.
A real nightlife. If this is what I think it is, Suns games are going to fill up a lot more and less people will be leaving the venue by bus or car. A sea of red will head north after the game to continue the celebrations into the night. Some people probably think this is a pipe dream but the company behind this was required to a pay registration of interest fee of $100,000 which is non-refundable so you know they are serious.

According to this article brought out earlier this month, the work on the Carrara Sport Precinct is two years behind schedule. It also suggests that something should start by December 2014.
