If the Malthouse claim about Betts is 100% bullsh!t, surely Trigg would sue for defamation. I bet he doesn't.

THE AFL will "make an inquiry" about Mick Malthouse's claims that Eddie Betts had an agreement with Adelaide 18 months before he left Carlton.

Under AFL rules, players cannot sign with a rival club while under contract and the League will look into the sacked Blues coach's allegation.

"We would make an inquiry to see if we need to do anything that would require us to investigate further," an AFL spokesman told AFL.com.au.

You would think Trigg would kick up more of a stink than he has about the Betts allegation? Maybe Mick is just grandstanding? It's obvious both he and Trigg didn't get along, it was less than 12 months ago that Mark LoGuiudice wanted to extend Malthouse's contract, all that talk ended when Trigg arrived. I think the loss of trust began right there and then. Malthouse is acerbic with people, if you think he is terse with reporters he is even more disdainful of football administrators who know nothing about football coaching. Carlton has a history of administrative interference with coaching, just ask Premiership coaches like Jezza, Parkin and Walls, then you have coaches who failed in the re-build like Brittain, Ratten and more Premiership coaches such as Pagan and now Malthouse! Who would take on this job with any confidence? If you are a newbie coach, your head will be on the block quicker than a cast member from Game Of Thrones! Malthouse has bitten the dust, but the Blues woes will continue on for some time yet, they may even be on the road to extinction? You do not want to be in this position in a highly competitive national market place with three solid codes and 44 teams all vying for corporate dollars and an increasing supporter base. Carlton was once a successful club, one of the big three in Australia in the 20th century, not anymore, Carlton are the worst performed AFL of the past 15 years! Malthouse was not their only problem!

Much of what you have written above I agree with. But...

Did Ratten really "fail in the re-build"??

By what measure do you judge Carlton "the worst performed AFL team of the past 15 years."??

For what its worth I think Ratten got the most out of what was an average to good list. Malthouse overestimated that list quality and his ability to do better ( I think also his ego wouldn't let sleeping dogs - Eddie and Buckley - lie). The Carlton board to their eternal shame burnt one of their own believing a combination of their own BS and Mick's. 20-20 hindsight is a wonderful thing but a diligent board with their eyes open would have looked very closely at the way Mick left Collingwood and asked a few pertinent questions. Like

  • Why did the Pies let him go?
  • Who stirred the media storm around the coaching position at Collingwood?
  • Is Mick going to deliver more than Ratten could?
  • What does our list need?
  • What sort of culture does Mick really encourage and foster?
  • Is the whole package that is MM the right fit for Carlton?
Following Mick's appointment did any one do due diligence with Daisy?
The guy was a star in 2010 - 2011 but there were serious questions re his fitness and his ankle in particular. Did anyone really think he was worth the money that they were prepared to pay him or was the whole deal done with the same blinkered judgement that led to Mick's appointment in teh first place.

Coaches may be the icing on the cake but very rarely (if ever) do they make silk purses from sow's ears.

The most important element in any team's performance is list management and a strategy to give a team a regular crack at being seriously competitive regularly.

Carlton have embraced the messiah complex to their detriment.

Ratten should have been allowed to see how far he could take the team. He may well still be there

Ratten failed in the eyes of the administration, i think a lot of Carlton fans believe he might've been on the right track?

So far this decade, taking out the new clubs Gold Coast and GWS, Carlton have in fact moved up to 2nd bottom over the past 15 years edging past the DEES. 6 seasons into the new decade and the Blues have moved up just the one rung, the way the Tigers and Demons are shaping up this season you would have to say that the Blues are well behind their fellow cellar dwellers!

Pretty compelling data :thumbsu:

For what it's worth, I though Ratten was a bit hard done when he was sacked, and now with the benefit of hindsight, more convinced he was.

I just checked his coaching record. 60 wins 59 losses and 1 draw. At least he had his nose in front considering Carlton's position on those tables. I wonder if he will be given another go?

Ratten's win/loss record is glowing compared to his successor Malthouse's >

Ratten 60-59-1 (wins 50%)

Malthouse 20–33–1 (wins 37%)

But it would be one of the most courageous appointments in AFL history if Carlton were to re-appoint Ratten - not because he couldn't do the job - but because of the absolute about face it would involve.

Nice numbers but complete and utter junk and a waste of time. Ratten coached from 2007-2012 so 2000-06 is useless and you don't factor in the 2010-12 period. Another great effort of how to lie with statistics.

Are you completely clueless? The question was how do i justify stating Carlton are the worst peformed team of the past 15 years!! I listed 2010 - 2015 clearly: here it is again for you as soon as you learn how to read! These are the FACTS man, how can you argue with that? This is Carlton's record from 2000-2009 and again from 2010-2015. They have moved up one position in 15 years! The only waste of time i can see is the Carlton football club's on field performances and that is junk personified!

This is highlighting Carlton's on going problem, they were a club built on continuous success, they have never gone through a period like this in their history.

Malthouse did a complete backflip on his Trigg/Betts story today apparently. One day Mick is pointing the finger at Triggs for "having Betts signed 18 months out." Next day Mick is commending Triggs for "good recruiting structure."

History shows the first game after the coach is sacked usually produces an inspired performance and often a win.

But you are correct regarding the players. They have stopped playing for Malthouse, and if the club has given him two weeks to turn things around, as rumoured, the players are unlikely to come to the party when it seems obvious they want him gone.
Oh yay shitney will lose this week then.things are looking up!:)

If your coach was sacked and Malthouse came knocking on your club's door and says he wants a job, would you take him?
