Mike Sheahan picks his best teams of the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's & 2000's

I can't reconcile this statement with the following....
If he's not going to do it properly using actual knowledge outside of Victoria, then why bother doing it at all??
It's not up to Mike Sheahan to celebrate the history of the WAFL and SANFL in the 1960's and 1970's.

Somebody should do it.

It's already been pointed out a million times that Sheahan is not qualified to do it (too parochial, NFI, etc)
Did it ever occur to you to put up your hand? Why are you waiting for somebody else to do it?
You prefer to waste your energies complaining about the lack of respect from Victorians.

OK, then it is not the greatest of their generation. It is the greatest to play VFL for the 70's and 80's. Then, it is the greatest to play AFL for the 90's and 00's.

He's selling something he hasn't done and is unqualified to do.

these decade things are kinda stupid, for example if there was a team from 2004-2014 N riewoldt would have CHF locked up. Its players are basically getting rated on the fortunes of their birthdays. Start hitting your career straps half way through a decade and miss out of a good chance at a team of the decae

Mike Sheahan wrote about VFL and AFL football for four decades. He never covered the SANFL, nor the WAFL.
Sheahan is no more parochial than any other journo who covered the VFL, SANFL or WAFL. They all pretty much stuck to what they knew.

The constant complaints about this are quite tiresome. What do you hope to gain by relentlessly beating the same drum, year after year? Sheahan is nearly 70 years old. He is unlikely to change at this stage of his life. He's not going suddenly start picking Russell Ebert in his greatest team ever to shut you Port fans up.

Don't like Sheahan? Stop reading his articles. Don't open a thread with Sheahan's name in the title.

1. Did anyone ever claim the VFL = AFL? Everyone knows the AFL is a continuation of the VFL competition with expansion teams from Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney. We don't need keep going around in circles over this.

2. You're misrepresenting the position of the so-called "troglodytes". Nobody disputes that good footballers have come from all parts of the continent. Nobody ever seriously claimed "Victorian footballers are better". That's just playing to your SA inferiority complex. The Victorians always boasted their VFL comp was the strongest - they had a greater depth of the talent and more good players.

This cannot be disputed. More than 50% of AFL fans and 50% of players selected in the national draft come from Victoria. Then you have all the players from Tasmania, ACT and the NSW Riverina. Add to that the many high-priced WA and SA champions who chased the VFL dollars (or simply wanted to prove themselves in the best competition.)

Sheahan's 90's players:
  • NT: McLeod
  • WA: McKenna, Jakovich, Matera
  • SA: Bradley, Jarman, Wanganeen, Hart, Rehn, Kernahan
  • NSW: Carey, Kelly,
  • ACT: Hird
  • VIC: Williams, Silvagni, Ablett, Lockett, Hocking, Harvey, Salmon, Grant, Brown

So you have the 9 Victorians… Plus Carey, Kelly and Hird… Plus Kernahan and Bradley who chose the VFL over the SANFL. The old VFL clubs would've been lining up to secure the likes of Jakovich and Matera. Let's be charitable and say only Jakovich's club agreed to the transfer fee.

So even if the VFL, SANFL and WAFL maintained the same course and the AFL never eventuated, at least 15 of the 22 players from Sheahan's 90's team would've been playing VFL footy. And that's with Shaun Rehn in the ruck! As good as he was (prior to rupturing his ACL) I would say he is a somewhat contentious selection for ruckman of the 90s.

1990's All Australian rucks: Stynes (2), Wynd, Rehn (2), J Madden, McKernan, Salmon, Everitt (2), Allan… Just the one ruckman (Rehn) recruited from the WAFL or SANFL from that lot. Damian Monkhorst was another Victorian ruckman from that era who would sit comfortably alongside any of them.

Im convinced every GWS "supporter" on this site is either a troll account or is directly employed by the AFL.

Not sure why Luke Hodge is in there ahead of Adam Goodes or Ben Cousins if we're talking from 2000-2009. Anyway I should expect this from Mike Sheahan...

Pav six time AA as a kPP (more than Riewoldt and way more than Brown) yet can only get a spot on the bench. You have to laugh

Am I the only one that thinks the teams are pretty good?

Sure, there may be one or two I could argue with, but over four decades there will always be stiff omissions. I can't see any selections that are ridiculous (as would usually be the case if a BigFooty poster had a go)

Leaving out Ben Cousins from the 2000s team?

Yeah ridiculous.

Bloke is in the top 50 players of all time IMO.

1970s
B
: J. Rantall (SM/NM/Fitz), D. Dench (NM), G. Southby (Carl)
HB: B. Doull (Carl), P. Knights (Haw), F. Bourke (Rich)
C: W. Schimmelbusch (NM), P. Bedford (SM/Carl), K. Greig (NM)
HF: M. Blight (NM), R. Hart (Rich), A. Jesaulenko (Carl/StK)
F: K. Bartlett (Rich), P. Hudson (Haw), P. McKenna (Coll/Carl)
Foll: L. Thompson (Coll/SM/Fitz), L. Matthews (Haw), B. Cable (NM)

Int: G. Wilson (Fitz), G. Dempsey (Foots/NM), W. Richardson (Coll), M. Tuck (Haw)

Coach: R. Barassi

Captain: W. Schimmelbusch

Out: Mckenna, Bedford

In Clarke, Stewart

He has two specialist full forwards in Hudson and McKenna, that won't work so i'm replacing McKenna with David Clarke. Sheahan loves Bedford, but Ian Stewart was sensational for Richmond in the early 70's.

2000s
B
: C. Johnson (Fitz/BL), M. Scarlett (Geel), D. Fletcher (Ess)
HB: *L. Hodge ? (Haw), J. Leppitsch (BL), *N. Lappin ? (BL)
C: N. Buckley (BB/Coll), M. Voss (BL), S. Black (BL)
HF: N. Riewoldt (StK), J. Brown (BL), B. Harvey (NM)
F: J. Akermanis (BL/WB), M. Lloyd (Ess), B. Johnson (WB)
Foll: D. Cox (WC), C. Judd (WC/Carl), G. Ablett jnr (Geel/GC)

Int: M. Pavlich (Fre), M. Ricciuto (Adel), S. Crawford (Haw), W. Tredrea (PA)

Coach: L. Matthews

Captain: M. Voss

Out C Johnson. B Johnson

In C Enright, A Goodes

Enright is the epitome of the modern day defender, the best since Doull, how Sheahan could leave him out only typifies his overwhelming Brisbane bias.

Goodes in for B Johnson, is Sheahan mad?

You could make a case for * Andrew Mcleod in place of Lappin or Hodge?

He acknowledged on the radio (SEN) that Cousins makes the team based on performance and ability, but he left him out due to his career being tainted by drugs. He also referenced a game in which he came back after a lengthy layoff and had 38 disposals. In his opinion, it was too suss.

Right, or wrongly, Mike reckons he was a cheat and it's the sole reason he wasn't included.

No need to respond to my post, I'm merely parroting his views as expressed on radio.
