If it's good enough for the IOC to strip athletes of medals after an event from being found as drug cheats, it sure as hell is good enough for the AFL.

Doesn't matter whether you agree with it, feel sorry for Jobe, it HAS TO BE one of the outcomes from this mornings findings!

I think Jobe will be stripped but the medal will go down in history as unawarded*
Whilst Mitchell and Cotchin may not want it... They actually earnt it!

They were the Fairest and Best of 2012.

When Chris Grant polled the most votes, he didn't win due to being suspended because of an incident in that particular season. That medal was still awarded!

Jobe polled the most votes, but has been suspended due to an incident in that season, medal should still be awarded.

This is four years after though, not the same season. Can't see the AFL awarding it to Cotchin & Mitchell.
Whilst it may look awkward etc, who cares what it looks like, they are now the rightful winners of the award.

The AFL did present Brownlows to players who lost on a countback decades after the event, even though the countback system was the correct ruling at the time.

They will get it evenutally!

I sort of like the idea of it being blank but yeah cotchin and mitchell deserve it. People are ineligible for unsportsmanlike conduct in the year they run and you can't really get more unsportsmanlike than drug cheating- if Watson is sensible he will hand it back voluntarily ASAP and avoid the humiliation.

This is one issue where the amount of time which has passed really affects peoples perception of things - if Watson had been found to be a drug cheat a fortnight after the brownlow medal count, it would be a no brainer that the next highest polling player(s) should get the chaz.

There were, but unfortunately the entire process was compromised by a squad of unfair players. If Watson had any credibility, he'd hand it back without even being asked.
Not really, Mitchell and Cotchins performances were not influenced by Essendons drig cheating program. Therfore, after the completion of the Home and Away season, they were adjudged to have been the Best and Fairest players in the competition for that season. Its actually pretty simple TBH.

Yes it will always be remembered because of Jobe being a drug cheat, but that should not deny anyone else the right to win it. Irrelevant of how much time has or hasn't past

I posted this in the main thread, as the Brownlow thread on the main board got shut down, but it applies here too I think.

There are multiple reasons the Brownlow shouldn't be awarded to Cotchin and Mitchell, but the long and short of it is that Essendon players polled a total of 63 votes in 2012. These votes, unlike votes cast for players ineligible due to suspension, are votes that are tainted due to the players recieving them getting an artificial boost to increase their performance. Without that boost, there's no guarantee that those players would have performed to a sufficient standard to receive those votes. Whilst a suspended player can receive best on ground votes regardless of their eligibility, those votes are deserved, as they are on the back of that individuals own performance. A vote on the back of an artificially enhanced performance is not deserved, and should ideally be stripped and redistributed.

So then we have 63 votes to redistribute in a poll where a single vote seperated 2nd and 3rd place. Those redistributed votes could potentially drastically alter the outcome of the poll. The sensible solution is to have no winner for 2012, as the entire poll was compromised.

Strip him but leave it with an asterisk IMO - the whole season was compromised with the entire Essendon squad snagging votes here and there off players that could've influenced placings 3rd to 10th etc

Didnt Chris Grant do the same he broke the rules yet still stole votes from others? How is it any different Jobe just broke another type of rule, all people who have been reported and receive brownlow votes do it year in year out, not even the winner

Read my previous post for an explanation on why there's a big difference.
