Most impressive list rejuvenation in one off-season?

That is one of the greatest pieces of drafting ever, nailed 2 in 3 years and set up a dynasty.

Its hard to reconcile WTF they were doing in 2000

Traded for Justin Murphy, Mitchell White and Kent Kingsley.

First pick was used on Josh Hunt. Played 198 matches for the cats and played in two premierships. Not bad for pick #44. Next two picks in the 70s, played 1 match between them.

Obviously they took a long hard look in the mirror on NYE 2000 and went 'let's just go back to nailing the drafts like geniuses. OK, deal'...

Swans 2009 offseason set up our flag in 2012:

Out:
Leo Barry
Jared Crouch
Michael O'Loughlin
Barry Hall
Tadhg Kennelly
Nic Fosdike

In:
Josh Kennedy
Ben McGlynn
Shane Mumford
Lewis Jetta
Sam Reid
Gary Rohan
Dan Hannebery (finished schooling)

Those outs tho

It's called probability.

Not really. The cats were in a drafting purple patch at the time but traded away almost all their picks for one of the most useless sacks of potatoes you might ever see - Kent Kngsley, Justin Murphy and Mitchell White for picks 11, 27, 42, 45 & 57. They did land Josh Hunt with pick 44 which was their first pick.

Geelong's core built on '99 and '01 and Hawthorn's built on '01 and '04. That's why I've always said that Hawthorn were a couple of years behind Geelong when it comes to slowly sliding back, '08 was just an early Christmas present.

The main difference now is that Hawthorn's class of '01 have endured much better than Geelong's and Hawthorn has recruited from other clubs much better. They've picked up players for specific needs and they've all been, as far as I remember, resounding successes. Geelong has mainly recruited players from other clubs to keep Menzel, Vardy and Cowan company in the recovery room.:(

Of course GC and GWS have helped the likes of Hawks, Cats, Swans and Freo endure around the top 4 longer than they may have otherwise. Not that any of them haven't deserved to be there by being gun teams, it's just held back, imo, other established clubs from getting the best talent from the drafts and potentially coming up and challenging for the top 4.

I always throw up Geelong finishing top 4 at the end of the h&a in '13. For me it said more about the rest of the competition and their lack of access to top young talent that may aided them in climbing more quickly.

Thankfully it seems to be returning to normal now and middle rung clubs might get a run at it now. If they're astute enough.

Of course there's FA now too which basically coincided with the end to the compromised drafts. The joker in the pack.

Essendon's last round in 1992 had the following in it: Kieran Sporn, Michael Symons, Glenn Kilpatrick, Brad Fox, Derek Kickett, Terry Daniher and Simon Madden.

13 months later in the premiership side: Mark Mercuri, Ricky Olarenshaw, David Calthorpe, David Grenvold, Dustin Fletcher, Dean Wallis, Sean Denham and Tim Watson.

Fair amount of change.

From a Melbourne perspective, 2013.

Dom Tyson, Christian Salem, Bernie Vince, Daniel Cross, James Harmes, and Jay Kennedy-Harris. Vic Michie from the same period decent but not great, and Aidan Riley a total bust, but we did pretty well. Technically we drafted Hogan the year before but he only became eligible to play when we got these guys in.

Everything from 2007-2011 was garbage (':

Agree with most or all of that. I would add a couple of points;
  1. Clarko has been a genius at protecting Hodge/Mitchell/Burgoyne etc. He has basically devised a H&A game plan specifically to prolong their careers - kill them with your kicking and they are really only called on to play nuts in September. Geelong on the other hand played 8 odd years of top level contested football without the Hawthorn chip chip to conserve energy and bodies and it eventually took its toll.
  2. I agree that the new teams have diluted the talent. It also helped that Collingwood fell off a cliff.
  3. The Geelong 2-3 years ahead of Hawthorn is spot on.

If you look at Melbourne's 2013 list and compare it to now, you'll be hard pressed to see such a massive turnover of crap. 2014 still had a lot of holes though.

Geelong in 99, 2001...woah.

At the conclusion of 1985 Swans were 3rd last on the ladder.
1986 Sydney Swans first got Geelong coach Tom Hafey.
Then raided Geelong list of Greg Williams, Bernard Toohey and David Bolton
Champion centreman, classy half backer and pacy winger type.
They then got classy Essendon midfielder Merv Neagle (loved watching this guy play) and Gerard Healy off Melbourne. Healy a few years earlier kicked 77 goals as a forward but by this stage was a ruck rover type. Great long kick.
They also snared quality player from Bulldogs Jim Edmond, Paul Morwood from Saints and ruckman Glenn Coleman from Fitzroy.
At the end of home and away rounds of 1986 they were second on the ladder.
Greg Williams won his first Brownlow that year.
Greg Williams and Gerard Healy were devastating as a duo from centre for Swans.

There will never be an off season of player movements like there was from 1985 to 1986.
Truly was incredible.
In 1987 Swans at one stage had three matches in a row they scored 30 goals or more. Cannot see that ever happening again.
This is it for me, amazing transformation.

Adelaide Crows 1996; Finishes 12th, Liptak wins B&F, 1 AA, no Rising Star nominees

Out: Robert Shaw (Coach), Tony McGuinness (delisted captain), Chris McDermott (retired former captain), Andrew Jarman (popular player), Scott Hodges, David Brown, Jonathon Ross, Nick Pesch

Don't really trade in anyone particularly special, majority gone within a few years. Same with the new coach. Port Adelaide joins the comp, and both their 1997 Coleman Medallist and an AA star and future Brownlow medallist both miss Grand Final.

One of these names is not like the others.
Rodan was a jet before his knee reco. Consistent contributor and was especially important in some of the dark years. Yet another player who was cast aside by your mob only to play his best football elsewhere.

A bit off topic but I thought we did this in 1992. A check of the stats says 'close but no cigar'.

37.17 vs. Brisbane
32.18 vs. Adelaide
28.13 vs. Essendon

We should have won that flag but the Eagles shut us down. Bloody Matera!

Impressive the Cats got that close.
The three week run of Sydney Swans in 1987 was the following.

Swans on top of ladder then had their run stopped by Carlton the following week.

Round: 19 Venue: Princes Park Date: Sat, 8-Aug-1987 2:10 PM Attendance: 31,639
Carlton 6.8.44, 8.10.58, 11.16.82, 17.21.(123)
Sydney 1.4.10, 6.6.42, 7.6.48, 8.7.(55)

It is incredible how Sydney went from cellar dweller in 1985 to being seen as a contender for flag with Hawthorn and Carlton the next two years. Tom Hafey had coached many grand final sides so I guess to be expected. He never actually got them into the grand final. That three week run though was amazing to nearly be first side to score 200 plus in three straight games. Eat your heart out Ross Lyon.

Had Rioli, too, until the salary cap got in the way.

Would have been amazing midfield to have Greg Williams, Gerard Healy, Maurice Rioli, Merv Neagle, Barry Mitchell and Bernie Evans in the one team. Hard to play them all in the guts.

Truly was incredible.

Just to highlight how incredible this off season was from 1985 to 86 probably the second biggest list rejuvenation came in that same off season.
Carlton ended up 5th the previous season. Had Bruce Doull 34 years old, Wow Jones 31, Rod Ashman 30, Mark Maclure 30, Bruce Reid 30, Des English and Ken Hunter 28. Certainly needed to change things up a bit with guys like Doull, Ashman and Maclure close to retirement. We had fallen away from the 1981 and 82 back to back flags and not getting younger.
First off they changed the coach. David Parkin was swapped to Fitzroy to coach for Robert Walls.
Carlton then got Stephen Kernahan, Craig Bradley and Peter Motley all from South Australia in the same year.
Also got Jon Dorotich and Peter Kenny from WA and Bernie Evans from Swans. Kenny the only player not a walk up start in seniors but in his first season kicked 25 or so goals as a smaller forward in and ou of side.
As we know, tragically Peter Motley was in car accident early in his second year here and was lucky to survive but never played football again. He was expected to be as good or better than Sticks and Braddles. To think how Sydney and Carlton both brought so many quality players in, ready made too, in one off season is incredible. Unlike Swans, Carlton actually did make the grand final the next two seasons. 1986 grand final lost to Hawks with Motley quite impressive in a poor game by the team. The next season Carlton had to beat Hawks to get revenge. Bradley after the 87 premiership gave his medallion to his close mate Motley in the change rooms just happy to have Motley still alive.
