Ablett Snr - the reason i love footy

left field - Chris Grant, superstar that SHOULD have won two brownlows

1/ Ablett Sr - I've never seen anyone do the things he could do. In a list highlighting individuals, he was the best individual. Consistency of effort and team ethos are irrelevant.
2/ Hird - Consistently willed himself upon the moment.
3/ S Madden - Favourite player as a kid. High marking, goal kicking ruckman who revolutionised his position... nothing else to be said.
4/ Carey - See Hird.
5/ Lockett - Another whose individual ability made his deficiencies irrelevant.

* Saw Matthews at the tail-end of his career and thus mainly as a forward. Was awesome. If I'd seen more of him as a rover he'd be in there too.

Matthews - uncompromising
Carey - had an extra gear when needed
Lockett - most intimidating player I've ever seen
Voss - like Carey had an extra gear when game was on the line
Roos - 10 years ahead of his time as a rebounding defender

Modra (his highlights reel is better than Ablett's - see YouTube)
Hawkins (a magician, unbeatable, owned his wing)
Daicos (consistently pulled off the un-pull-offable)
Jarman (simply the best, more skill in his little finger than the whole team put together)
Albett Snr (a walking highlights reel)

I'll probably get destroyed for this, but seeing as I'm only 24 this is my top five favourite players I'VE PERSONALLY witnessed in no particular order..

Ben Cousins
Gary Ablett Jr
Chris Judd
Alan Didak
Adam Goodes

Abuse me all you like, and I am fully aware I'm old enough to have seen many greater players, but many of them are a childhood fuzzy memory, these ones are fresh in the memory and have personally blown me away. If I was 125 years old perhaps my list would include all the greats, but they are only statistics to me. these guys have blown me away when I've been old enough to FULLY comprehend how good they are.

My top 10 of all time

1) Warren Tredrea - Uncompromising
2) Dermott Brereton - 2nd greatest CHF of all time no question
3) Peter Bell - The best midfielder to ever grace the game
4) Lance Whitnall - Was there a more skilled player of his size?
5) Peter "Spida" Everitt - The premier tap ruckman of all time
6) Mal Michael - Toughest defender of all time, could play small or tall
7) Anthony Stevens - greatest captain and leader. period.
8) Austin "Aussie" Jones - elite ball winning wingman, best ever bar none
9) James Clement - Mr Lock n Load. Lock down his opponent, load up on defensive rebound
10) Richard "Richie" Van Den Berg - In my opinion was better than crawford. Had the ball on a string his whole career.

Thoughts?

well you took 10 shots at the five greatest players of all time and you didnt get any that would be considered top 5. this must be some kind of sick twisted joke, peter bell the best midfielder ever what!!!!!! everitt was the greatest tap ruckman in his dreams brendan lade clearly was a better tap ruckman in the mid 2000's alone. van den berg was a thug and thats about it. james clement should "lock and load"" a gun and point it at himself as he is not top 100 all time. "aussie jones no, tredrea great but no. lance whitnall delisted while still in his twenties from the worst team in the league at that period. just a shocking shocking list. anthony stevens again just no.....

Have you ever watched football in your life? These players are greats.

There were many who were unlucky to make my list, such as:
- Kent Kingsley, the greatest "lead mark goal" player I have ever seen
- Russell Robertson, the dominant aerialist of his era
- Leigh Matthews, the elite of his time
- Darren Gaspar, the padlock, would stop opponents like no other
- Travis Johnstone, beautiful user of the ball either side of his body
- Peter Daicos, the macedonian marvel
- Shane Woewoedin, brownlow medallist. enough said.
- Troy Cook, Indigenous star, magical
