He expressed an opinion different from yours.

No, he had the facts wrong. See idiotic statement below. Whilst it may appeal to the CPSU and idiot left most people can see it for the dribble it is.

"because they know that the nurses, the teachers, the miners, the construction workers -they shouldn’t be paying all the tax while the millionaires simply are able to minimise theirs"

This remember from someone who couldn't even say carbon tax.

ANTHONY ALBANESE: Well there is a focus, Leigh, on process and this debate, again, every question tonight has been about process rather than about substance. The Government's job is to talk about substance. Take the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme ....

He gets numerous facts wrong ie Buffet pays a lower tax rate not lower tax. He also fails to acknowledge the massively disproportionate amount of tax paid by the rich.

Huh? Still not getting the problem here?

Essentially Albanese and Buffett are contending that the rich shouldn't be able to manipulate their taxable income to pay a smaller tax rate than the poor and that there should be a tax rate floor for a given income that you shouldn't be able deduct your way below.

Pollies always think they can dupe people by saying they will tackle avoidance. The muppet Tory chancellor in the UK has tried the same trick. The predicted revenue never arrives. Its a con. The other great BS line is "efficiency savings". Like that works in the PS.

Albo is either thick or just having you on. Note he doesn't even mention spending.

As for Buffett, hypocrite of the highest order.

However, an even bigger problem is that he and his ilk simply cant grasp the reality of the attitude of successful people and how they react to tax. If you have a penal top rate of tax, people will find ways to avoid it. Lower the tax rate and it becomes less worthwhile to set up expensive tax structures.

On the same day

Albo - tax the rich
Shorten - tax the rich via an ETS

They never learn.

His point wasn't 'tax the wealthy more' - it was 'make sure the wealthy actualy pay tax like everyone else'.

What's your issue with this? You think millionaires shouldnt have to pay tax?

Mal its BS. Osborne pulls the same crap in the UK. Instead of making tough decisions they play to the crowd and pretend they can solve budget issues by tackling avoidance. It raises two thirds of stuff all every time (and can even cost money, see charging non doms).

The wealthy do pay tax like everyone else. A massively disproportionate amount.

Its just dishonest claptrap. Biggest proponents of it is The Guardian. Amusing given their penchant for offshore tax avoidance to avoid tax when selling assets.

Hang on - whose more likely to have an accountant/ off shore finances/ money cycling through a trust etc?

The poor or the wealthy?

Hey man - I'm happy for the poor to be equally pinged for tax avoidance if it makes you any happier.

A lot of wealthy peeps and companies don't pay tax via various schemes. That should stop.

S ANGELES (AP) – An attorney said Wednesday that the body of a mystery man was decomposing in his car in the tony Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Southern California for nearly two weeks before he was found by authorities on July 17.

Inside his home, detectives discovered more than 1,200 guns, scopes, 6.5 tons of ammunition, bows and arrows, knives, machetes and $230,000 in cash.

Tons....

Really?
Yeah, not seeing the problem here, could you try and explain your position?

Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan police commissioner, last night ordered an urgent review of a policy that allows officers to refuse certain duties on moral grounds after a decision to excuse a Muslim policeman from guarding the Israeli embassy.

PC Alexander Omar Basha, who is attached to the force's Diplomatic Protection Group, objected to being posted to protect Israel's embassy in central London from possible terrorist attack because he disagreed with the country's bombing of Lebanon. The officer had reportedly attended a recent anti-war protest.

Hey Meds, what's with UK politicians? Another caught on video sniffing with friends?

Maggie, I have no idea but its long been going on. The below happened just after I first arrived in the UK. There have been a heap of sex scandals ever since (Hamilton, Jeffrey Archer etc).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/february/8/newsid_2538000/2538165.stm

Forensic scientists are investigating the "suspicious circumstances" of the death of Conservative MP for Eastleigh Stephen Milligan

One officer said: "The body was naked except for a pair of stockings and suspenders."
But he refused to comment on rumours the politician was also bound and gagged.

Do you think it is also happening here?
Interesting article, that is what I mean, seems a frequent occurrence in the UK more so than here or USA?

Possibly but they probably get away with it The tabloids are pretty ruthless here and Murdoch has a bone to pick with them given the witch hunt over phone hacking (The Sun on Sunday broke the story).

Of far more concern is the expenses MPs claim. I have little doubt Australia is just as bad if not worse. Would love to see an expose by the media letting us know who has been putting their hand in the cookie jar.

I posted a link in the Bishop thread where it lists the amounts for each MP but no details sadly. Totally agree irrespective of which party. Have no doubt there would be some interesting expenses.

UK used to just list totals of expenditure IIRC. However recent ruling has changed that. It would be great if the ALP, Greens, media etc all hounded Abbott to demand we follow suit.

MPs will no longer be able to keep their expenses claims private, after a court ruling on Wednesday stating receipts and invoices submitted by politicians must be made public

The court case centered around the inquiries of a Telegraph journalist, who requested specific receipts submitted by three MPs but was provided with only a transcript of the transactions.

And have their own subject to scrutiny?

Problem with issues that happen across the board is all sides are very willing to let it slide in all by the most egregious of cases.

Nursery school staff and registered childminders must report toddlers at risk of becoming terrorists, under counter-terrorism measures proposed by the Government.

The directive is contained in a 39-page consultation document issued by the Home Office in a bid to bolster its Prevent anti-terrorism plan.

The document accompanies the Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill, currently before parliament. It identifies nurseries and early years childcare providers, along with schools and universities, as having a duty “to prevent people being drawn into terrorism”
