meh, the AFL is a billion dollar industry, you don't want a dill running it. To attract the best people you have to pay.
 
What exactly does the OP believe the CEO of a spectacularly successful ( especially compared to other major sports in this country) organisation like the AFL should have been paid?
 
In answer to the thread title to get this sort of job you have to be incredibly well credentialled, respected, highly trained and have skills that probably 0.001% of the population have. People love to bag Demetriou but by nearly all business metrics he was a huge success as CEO, and if he didn't apparently deserve the money it would be the commission's fault not his.
 
When you think about how many people are directly employed through the AFL system ( players, club staff, AFL staff, ground staff, umpires etc) it runs into the many thousands.

No different from a CEO in charge of a massive Australia wide company.

Doesn't bother me one bit that A.D and brother of Hame get paid the dollars they receive.
