I'm not in any way transgender, but when I was a young boy I remember getting these Littlest Pet Shop toy dogs. I noted though that a lot of their products were being advertised as girls' toys and began to be concerned that I was playing with girls' toys - I was probably around 8 or 9 years old and this was around the time "gaylord" was the worst insult going around. Naturally I did not want to be a gaylord and so reacted against the toys.
As it turns out, I am indeed a homosexual, but in part because I had to deny this when I was eight (well before I had any idea what my sexuality was) it took me a long time to accept it and then come out - though my family and friends are all quite progressive the issue was more I'd spent so long denying it it was hard to then say "Okay, no, actually I am."
That's not to say the notion of boys' toys and girls' toys are the reason for people being closeted or anything like that - of course not. But growing up is hard for most people, as we work out who we are, and kids especially shouldn't feel weird or pigeonholed because they're a boy and they like to play dress ups or they're a girl and they like to play soccer.
