I'd think we'd have a fair offer for Rance on the table. FA so we wouldn't have to worry about trading picks and solidifies our defense for the future. Having Rance, Clarke and Gardiner is a pretty solid core down back.

Considering Tippett chose Sydney in that infamous trade period I'm pretty happy to pass tbh. He'd come with a fairly hefty price tag and Sydney would probably ask for a first rounder to boot. He's had quite a few injury niggles the past few years and as much as we need a focal point up forward, I don't think his heart would be in it at the Lions. Pass.

I was away for work last night and happened to be staying at the same place that all of the western bulldogs were staying. I must say I couldn't believe how lean these guys were. Even the biggest bloke - Minson - there was nothing of him (not talking height here).

Aaron Sandilands in sights of Gold Coast Suns as Fremantle Dockers ruckman ponders playing on beyond 2015

EASTERN States football clubs are circling on Fremantle Dockers legend Aaron Sandilands.

The Sunday Times can reveal the Gold Coast Suns and the ruckman’s management have recently met to discuss the 2016 season.

It is understood the Suns believe the 211cm ruckman would be a vital acquisition in their attempts to fast-track a maiden premiership built around a brilliant midfield that includes Gary Ablett and a brigade of young stars.

Sandilands will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and contract negotiations with Fremantle for beyond 2015 have now been stalled for the past six months.

He could attract offers as high as $1.2 million a season if he left Fremantle.

The giant star accumulated a league-high 890 tap outs from his 23 appearances in 2014.

He won his fourth All-Australian selection and was runner-up to Nat Fyfe in the Dockers fairest-and-best voting.

Leading player manager Colin Young, from Corporate Sports Australia, said his 32-year-old client had “never felt better” and wants to play on after 2015.

“We have tried for the last six months to begin negotiations with Fremantle,” he said.

“However, we respect that it’s the club’s call to put these discussions on hold.”

In December, Young said Sandilands wanted a resolution on a Fremantle extension before the new AFL home-and-away premiership campaign or he will hold off and explore all options and alternative offers from clubs at the end of the season.

The Sunday Times understands other Eastern States clubs with finals aspirations have also expressed interest in signing up Sandilands.

When asked about the discussions with Gold Coast, Young confirmed he had recently returned from Queensland.

However, he said he regularly visits the Suns because Corporate Sports Australia manages several Gold Coast players such as Jeagar O’Meara, David Swallow, Brandan Matera and Harley Bennell.

The Dockers would have cover if they lost Sandilands with Zac Clarke and Jonathon Griffin ready replacements.

Young also manages Fremantle defenders Michael Johnson and Paul Duffield, due to be a free agents at the end of this season too.

They are also yet to sign new contracts.

Former Fremantle coach Chris Connolly said the club should trade Sandilands for an “early draft pick or younger player” if it doesn’t think it can win the premiership in the next few years.

“If they believe they can win the premiership in the upcoming years they should definitely keep him as he has a huge influence on the results of big games,” Connolly said.

“If they believe they need to rebuild the list as they cannot win the premiership in the upcoming years they should consider trading him to a club who is looking to win the premiership for an early draft pick or younger player.”

Current Fremantle coach Ross Lyon recently said Sandilands had “a few more years left” in his AFL career.

Lyon said the ruckman could “surprise with his longevity”.

With captain Matthew Pavlich and senior defender Luke McPharlin possibly retiring at the end of this year, it would be the end of an era for the Dockers if they lost Sandilands too.

But losing the star trio could give the club its biggest trade war chest ever.

Fremantle general manager of player management Brad Lloyd said the club “does not provide a running commentary on contract negotiations”.

“We are in regular, if not, weekly contact with all player managers,” he said.

Young said football clubs that used free agency with the proper due diligence could benefit greatly.

He also said it was inevitable the number of years a player must before he could become a free agent will be reduced from eight to six.

Not at all necessary. Cannot understand this one bit.

Not sure why the Suns would go down that path tbh... Got 2 very good young ruck prospects in Nicholls and Smith that can definitely compete with the top 8 or so rucks when fully fit. Also just recruited a top state league ruck prospect as well and have Dixon, Day, Gorringe and Wright that could also play ruck if needed. Just doesn't seem like a smart move with the brigade of young stars soon to be demanding top dollar. If it ever does happen (not likely) then Dixon could feel threatened for his spot in the team and this is where we should come in and sign him up.
