If I sign up for NJPW now, will I be able to watch it or not?

If you sign up to their online service?

Yes, it'll be on demand at some stage - I'm just not sure when. (If I were to hazard a guess I'd say tomorrow?)

I've just finished watching it on New Japan World half an hour ago.

Damn I wanted to watch it now. I guess I'll just sign up and watch it tomorrow then, all I've heard was that it was one of the best wrestling shows people have seen for a while.

yes, really not good enough re: flipps.

$45 for a stream that was of a poor quality even when not crashing half a dozen times over a 3 and a half hour period. completely missed aj's match! will try for a refund.

show was good though, have next to no experience watching japanese wrestling - was underwhelmed by the first few tag matches but loved everything from those 2 veteran fighters onwards (sorry can't remember many names haha). Everything looks so friggen violent! not sure who my favourite was - knew kenny omega from his famous youtube of fighting the little girl and thought he was really charasmatic, also liked nakumara a great deal. will keep a closer eye on this stuff in the future.

was good to hear (jumpin') Jim Ross (the white meat babyface from Norman Oklahoma). As a layman I liked Stryker's helpful rainman facts he kept dropping, but hated his carrying on over embarrassing s**t (I'm a mark! Hey Jim, come on, say LARIATOOOOO! etc. jesus christ)

Good call man. As I said, I think this is the best top to bottom show I've seen in 20 years watching wrestling. I don't want to overhype it and set unrealistic expectations... but once you get to the last 2 matches I'm sure you'll agree with me.

If you're going to sign up anyway dude, there couldn't be any harm in seeing if it's available on demand now?

edit: I just checked for you - you can click on WK9 in the archive but I'm not able to play the video yet.

timtamWB I've just checked once more before going to bed - it's now available on demand. Although to be honest, from the random 2 minutes I skipped to (it's like the youtube player, not like WWE network player) the stream seems worse than when I watched it live at the moment... undoubtedly there's a hell of a lot of people on it!

I'll be watching it again when I get home from my first day back at work tomorrow.

I'd hoped tonight would be a great last night before going back to work - it so was, there's nothing I'd rather have done! I'm just bummed I can't watch it again when I get out of bed tomorrow.

I understand why Sunday night PPV was able to thrive for so long in North American wrestling. 5.20pm through to 10pm was just a brilliant time to be watching a live wrestling show. I'll be ditching the WWE Network after Wrestlemania, because this live Sunday night thing kicks arse.

I'm not sure if you know, but is it possible to unsubscribe from NJW at any time, or is there a commitment?

I want to see the show, but at the same time I'm not interested in the rest of the network really, and I don't have the time to dedicate myself to it.

There's no commitment - it's month by month. The only thing is that, from what I could tell from the google translation (which Jericho would kindly refer to as "Japanglish"), it goes by calendar month ie. the first of the month until the last of the month.

And you might surprise yourself dude - I suspect a lot of people, including myself, bought NJPW World for WK9, and considered the archive content and smaller shows this month a bonus. But on the strength of that show, I'll definitely be keeping it at least one more month to see the next major show, which is in Osaka in 5 weeks. (Although there's at least 6 live "lesser" shows available on the service before then.) This is how you launch a friggen over the top streaming service!!!

It's just a shame you didn't watch it live. As I said, the ability to watch live, big-time shows on a Sunday night is magic, it might've convinced you even more.

Oh, and by the way, even if you do only watch WK9 then unsubscribe - don't forget the G1 Climax tournament in August. This is their tournament featuring their best 22 wrestlers in a 12 night round robin tournament that takes place over about 25 days. Last years was awesome, I can't believe it looks like we'll get the whole thing next year for 10 bucks.

My favourite spot from WK9

WK9 was such a good show. I usually only watch a couple of NJPW matches a year, but after watching it I think I'm going to try harder to watch more and more of it

That last match... that may be the best match I've ever seen. Definitely the best match I've watched live/semi live.

That was a great show. Great show. Everything is just so... hard hitting. I guess that's why it's called strong style. :p I'm going to try and watch more of NJPW now, I doubt I'll get around to it.

EDIT: Ok turns out by last match I meant the Intercontinental title match. That last match may have been the second best match I've ever seen :p

Now I've watched him, I wish I had of gone to Adelaide to see Shinsuke Nakamura last year!

Gradually making my way through WK9. Watching Ishii vs Makabe. JR's descriptions are awesome. "That was a CAR CRASH disguised as a clothesline!"
I do have to be picky about the pronunciation of Maka'be', though. It's not Maka-bay, it's not Maka-bee, it's Maka-beh. As in, bet, met, let, net, pet.

Because I get annoyed by that ...

Oh, and ...

KAZE NI NARE~~~~~~~~!

I found it a bit weird how Ibushi no-sold a few things but I got caught in the moment anyway.

Funny how Ibushi is a 'kid' but four years younger than Nakamura. In terms of combat sport experience or something similar, I guess?

I was so happy for Shibata and Goto, though.

Here are Dave Meltzer's ratings for WK9 if anyone cares for them
  • Yuji Nagata won the New Japan Rumble in 26:09. *1/2

Absolutely agree with the IC match getting 5 stars, that was amazing.

Meltzer is such a blowhard for Japanese wrestling.

As you've seen in this thread, there was no bigger advocate for this show - but you could almost have stopped reading that when he gave the Junior tag match 4 stars.

I enjoyed the IC title match more, but I thought the Heavyweight title match probably had more features of a 5 star match.

From all reports, the Heavyweight title match was apparently a bit repetitive of matches they've had before. Still an amazing match.

Definitely agree with the IC title match getting 5 stars though. It was amazing. Although apart from the last two matches, some of the ratings are questionable.

very good show. the tag team match was a fun spotfest. i was really looking forward to sakuraba/suzuki while it was good i was a bit disappointed and think it need some more time. ishii may be my favourite nj guy and despite not being a fan of makabe i loved this match. like most people i thought the ic title match was motn. they really turned the brutality up a level towards the end which was awesome.

honma:hearts:

I thought both the last two matches were 5 stars to be honest. Off the top of my head, I can't think of an overall wrestling card that has had more quality across the board, and I then topping it off with two 5 star main events. Amazing. Who needs wwe :p

AXS TV have started running a New Japan Pro Wrestling show each week on Friday night in the US. Usually for 1 hour but this week will be 2 hours. Is old footage from previous bouts over the last few years. Has English commentary added.

I'd never watched anything from Japan until out of the blue I watched Wrestlekingdom 9 this year due to JR calling it and it was the best wrestling event I've watched possibly ever so pretty stoked with this new series.

Here's a great post from /r/squaredcircle with details for many different wrestling promotions
http://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCirc...ing_for_an_alternative_heres_a_list_of_other/

NJPW:

New Japan Pro Wrestling is a Japanese promotion that is in a booming period in the United States. They recently broadcasted their first English Pay-Per-View, Wrestle Kingdom 9, with Jim Ross and Matt Striker as their announcing team to much fanfare. Their top three stars are Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada and Shinsuke Nakamura but they also have a lot of wrestler knocking on the door to get recognized as one of the top stars: Kota Ibushi, Tomohiro Ishii, Katsuyori Shibata, Hirooki Goto, Tetsuya Naito just to name a few.

A good way to look at those Japanese website is to use the Translation option using Chrome.

ROH:

Ring of Honor is an American promotion that was created in 2001 shortly after the closing of ECW. They always prided themselves in showing the best pure wrestling possible. A lot of ROH Alumni went on going to WWE, we even often see ROH reference on the WWE.com website. Some of the ROH Alumni that were seen in WWE are: Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, CM Punk, Cesaro, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens.

TNA Wrestling:

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling has been the biggest “competitor” for WWE since the closure of WCW. We have all heard of TNA, some like them, some don’t like them. We can’t deny sometime their storylines are bad, but we can’t also deny that they have really good action inside the ring. They recently switched from Spike TV to Destination America, while they lost big exposure, they have been gaining viewership every weeks since the move to their new home. Some of the big names right now in TNA are: Kurt Angle, Lashley, Bobby Roode, The Hardys, Ethan Carter III, MVP and Samoa Joe to name a few.

PWG:

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla is an American promotion that started out in Southern California by a bunch of wrestlers. It is seen as one of the biggest indy promotion in the United States right now with some of the best fan interaction you will see anywhere in the world. Some people are arguing that PWG is at a point that ROH was in their hottest year. WWE apparently has them in their radar, William Regal has been seen scouting in their crowd sometime. Some of the big names in PWG right now are: Adam Cole, The Young Bucks, Roderick Strong, Kyle O’Reilly, Johnny Gargano, ACH, Ricochet, Chuck Taylor, Tommaso Ciampa.

Lucha Underground:

Lucha Underground is an American promotion in California that is heavily influence by Lucha Libre. It recently debuted on October 2014 and is a pretty unique looking wrestling show, reminding a lot of people of Wrestling Society X (with better production I would say.) People may be familiar with the likes of Johnny Mundo (John Morrison), Alberto el Patron (Alberto del Rio), Chavo Guerrero Jr., Prince Puma (Ricochet) and Big Ryck (Ezekiel Jackson). Their TV shows are on El Rey network in English and on UniMas in Spanish.

After being gone for almost a year, Chikara came back from the dead and rose from their ashes at the end of 2014. This comic-book inspired American wrestling company was founded in 2002 and has captured the imagination of their fans all over the world. It features over the top comedy and characters, while the fans are also a part of the stories. It’s an unique combination that makes for an unique federation.

Beyond Wrestling has an amazing, original and unique concept of being wrestlers wrestling in front of other wrestlers. They will help a lot of young indies wrestlers getting better and I definitely recommend checking them out.

Inter-Species Wrestling is a wrestling promotion that started out in Canada but is now doing shows in the United States. Their first show in Valleyfield in 2005 featured members of the Chikara roster and if I could make a comparison, they are like the Mature version of Chikara. In the mid 00s, it was arguably the most popular promotion in Canada. El Generico and Kevin Steen both started getting recognized while being in that company. CZW:

Combat Zone Wrestling is an American wrestling promotion that was founded in 1999 at the height of the ECW popularity. It was originally an ultraviolent wrestling company, but with the years they have changed their model to incorporate more high-flying and technical wrestling. The biggest CZW alumni would be without a doubt Dean Ambrose, who used to wrestle there under the name of Jon Moxley. They still have hardcore matches, but it is not happening as often as it was in the past.
