We have all heard past Geelong players, Lingy, Harley, Cam Moooney etc etc, mention they feel our current team reminds them of what Geelong was like back in 05-06.

I personally have never really taken notice much of this, ofc the dream is amazing because we all know what Geelong have been able to achieve, and if we could achieve half of that, we'd all be very lucky.

But watching Open Mike on Monday Night, hearing Cam Mooney talk candidly about Geelong in 05-06, I can see some very big similarities between our current team and Geelong.

Cam mentioned that one of the biggest problems was that the players were all great mates, and while it was great, they were unable to pull each other in when one made a mistake.

Our leadership dramas have been well spoken about, and this year so far we seem to have taken more control on the field, but I am yet to see a senior player or even a junior try and pull another player in when a fatal mistake is made such as a structural issue or a mistake that goes against our game plan and how we want to play.

Are our players too close? Are they able to step up and pull each other in if one makes a mistake?

Would love to get everyone's point of view.

I'm getting sick of hearing this.

In 2004 Geelong played in a prelim and were 9 points off playing in a GF.

2005 they should have played in a prelim, falling just short.

Their elite young talent were younger overall than ours are now and we are no where near where they were then.

They didn't have a 36 year old winning them half their games, they had a 20 - 21 year old who turned out to be the second best player to Carey coming through.

They managed to get Joel Selwood at 7 in 2006.

They had Bartel, Kelly, Johnson, Mackie, Corey, Enright, Chapman.

Who do we have? Don't say Bastinac, Atley and co. Not in the same league.

Where do I stop with the differences? Ok, the inconsistencies may be comparable to a degree, but that gun side had already achieved a lot more than our lot has at a younger age.

Our kids probably had more talent but they didnt have the sublime leaders around them that was geelong. not ratting on our own senior players but any average joe could become a 200 gamer with high credentials with enright, scarlett, milburn, corey, ottens, king, harley, ling all setting a fine example of how to make it in the game.

Forget 2006 - that was last year - we are Geelong 2007!

Geelong 2007:

Rd 1: Disappointing loss to Bulldogs has team and supporters lamenting another wasted year
Rd 2 and 3: Strong wins against Carlton and Melbourne has everyone up and about that we are back on track'
Rd 4: close loss to the under performing Hawthorn produces muffled calls to sack Thompsons
Rd 5: Devastating loss to bottom 4 from previous year North Melbourne at Geelong and angst towrds this team is at fever pitch - particularly calls to sack Thompsons as he bumbles through his presser and doesn't have the answers
Rd 6: thumping win over Richmond that starts a streak that will end in a flag

SO - prepare to get pumped on Friday, then sit back and enjoy the ride!

As a previous post said, Geelong played off in two preliminary finals before 2007. We finished 10th.

Mackie? Over rated IMO.

Actually, Geelong also finished 10th before 2007.
right you are. But they had preliminary finals experience in 2004, which is our 2011.
Season is still young, we will develop good, however id like to see us make a final, and win one.
let alone a Grand final.

I'm going to go with this mans theory until proven otherwise (may only take until this friday to be proven otherwise)

any of you that have posted in this thread even read the OP?? abby makes a very valid point. who is it in our team that is directing the younger guys? who is pulling thdm into line when they are not following the "easy fixes" set by Super Brad? When Boomer publicaly named some of the younger guys as not pulling their weight everyone had a go at him. Funny thing is Loogie went on to play is best football ever. Last night on AFL 360 they were talking about premiership teams being tough, how Buckley was making The Pies tough, how Bomber* was trying to make * tougher. I just dont see anyone at North Melbourne trying to be tough. Langford said he had never been more bruised than after Mondays game because the Geelong guys kept protecting who ever he was tagging. If our boys dont give it to Pinchy Pinch on Friday night then it has to be the end of Marshmellow Scott.

Everyone needs to stop with this rubish

We have no Ablett
We have no Bartel
We have no Enright
We have no Corey

We also most importantly don't have Bomber Thompson

That's a fairly simplistic view. In 2007 fans could have said Geelong don't have:

Voss
Lappin
Akermanis
Power
Brown

And they most certainly don't have Leigh Matthews.
