VFL's draw revamp a boon to AFL clubs
THE VFL draw will be much more AFL-friendly next season, with fewer byes for clubs reducing complications for AFL clubs.

Carlton was one of a number of AFL clubs that complained to AFL Victoria about fixturing problems in the state league last season.

Clubs were forced to bring players back into AFL ranks after injury without time in the VFL.

This season, however, the decision to have a stand-alone Essendon club in the competition - parting ways with Bendigo after a decade - is a blessing for the state league as it will return to an even number of teams, reducing the number of byes.

A reduced Foxtel Cup format - with Port Melbourne and Werribee the competing teams from the VFL - also makes the draw less complicated. Every club will have only one bye, down from four last season.

A clean bill of health at the club won't just be of enormous benefit to the senior side, but the reserves as well.

I'm quite comfortable with where we sit at the moment in terms of our depth for the coming season. Injuries are of course inevitable but if we can manage to keep the majority of the squad on the field throughout the course of the year there's no reason why the Northern Blues can't be in contention at the end of the season.

On top of that, let's not underestimate just how beneficial having a full-time coach in charge will be for the group as a whole. Will do wonders for the playing group.

Will be very interesting to see how we go at VFL level in 2013. Tipping us to have a pretty good year with plenty of experience likely to be lining up at VFL on a weekly basis.

Northern Blues intra-club by Matthew Lodge
McCarthy said that his one AFL game had given him a drive throughout the pre-season to improve on his endurance as well as his versatility under new coach, Mick Malthouse.

“I’ve grown into my body a lot more (in 2013) and that’s allowed me a lot of training form and continuity since Arizona,” said the young defender. “Personally, when I get my opportunity at senior level – be it Round 1, Round 5 or Round 15 – I want to get in and stay in and play as much of a part in Carlton going forward.”

The Northern Blues will play another intra club match next Friday night at Visy Park, followed by VFL practise matches in the lead-up to their season opener against Werribee on April 6.
