NRL wants ANZ Stadium to be made rectangular

This is the best thing for all three sports.
A rectangular ANZ will certainly bring more people to the precinct for RL.
Big Bash @ ANZ has never drawn above Spotless capacity except for Sixers derby.
Spotless will do GWS for the next 30 years except for Prelim finals and Swans matches once they become a decnt team. They can play finals @ SCG if a big crowd expected.
So not worth keeping ANZ for one match per year that is not selling out at the moment.

They are not trying to make the stadium a permanent rectangle stadium, the proposal has retractable stand to change it from an oval to a rectangle.

That expensive proposal is simply never going to happen.
Making permanent rectangle is cheaper to build and much cheaper to operate.
With Swans leaving ANZ is finished as a AFL venue.

The Giants can play their home game at the scg v the swans can't they ?
Why? Melbourne and Sydney derbies work just fine with one smaller venue in A-League. GWS are yet to sell out the Showgrounds.

Victory - Docklands 47k (seats in capicity), City - Swan St 30k
Sydney FC - SFS 45k, Wanderers - Parramatta 21k

Turns these games into events. The mad dash for tickets instead of we'll see on game day makes its a must see event like what both A-League derbies have become.

Apparently NSW has $2billion to spend on a whole range of things, they have said they are going to spend on sports entertainment but Sydney football stadium and Parramatta Stadium are also wanting major upgrades and it's unlikely the government will have enough for all 3

Just wait for the promises to roll.
$2 bill....peanuts.....

On the 28th March 2015, NSW electors will be required to vote for the 56th Parliament.

About time that ground ****ed off for good. GWS one day possibly outgrowing the Showgrounds Stadium isn't an argument. That ground has plenty of room for further construction if needed. Swans at the SCG, Giants at the Showgrounds and Manuka. Easy.

I don't mind ANZ, I have been there for SOO NRL and AFL.

That said for rugby league and any other rectangle based game you are too far away (same issue with the occasional game at the SCG).

They need the seats closer, but they also need to get more of an angle on the seats so you are over the action more. Fair dinkum, most Sydney surbuban hills have more angle then the first level of ANZ.

It was an Oval from the beginning or did you miss the Olympics?
It was oval-ish, but not wide enough for cricket or Aussie rules. The 2001-2003 reconfiguration removed the original seating on the wings, replacing it with the movable sections that are there today.

No I didnt - not that it technically was an oval with a bloody great big running track around it, but then neither did I miss the AFLs funding to convert it fully into an Oval after the Olympics, nor did I miss the loans guaranteed by the AFL for ANZ Stadium since.

If the NRL want it converted to rectangular, they can damn well pay for it. The AFL paid for the conversion to an oval
And every other sport has been paying for it since, just so the AFL could have a handful of games each year.

The future of ANZ Stadium has zero to do with the AFL.

Take that up with the Government and subsequent management who werent particularly interested in making it a stadium restricted to rectangular sports when you could play AFL and cricket on it too.

They certainly aren't blameless, the NRL being weak didn't help either, can only hope lessons are learnt and they find a way to fix it.

It's the same size as it was built for the Olympics. The AFL only gave them money so they wouldn't turn it into a rectangular stadium.

It most certainly isnt the same size it was during the Olympics. The lower seating bowl had to be reconfigured to make it into an oval shape, and movable seating had to be introduced.

The stadium has had major redevelopment work done throughout 2001 and 2002 to reduce the size and convert the playing field into an oval shape to enable Australian Football to be played. Stage two of the project was completed in March 2002 and included the removal of the two stands at either end, remodelling of the lower level of seating into an oval shape. Stage three included the extension of the roof at either end which used to be occupied by the two large stands - this was completed in 2003.

It was built for the Olympics and the only thought that went into what happened after was "how do we defray/reduce the cost". (with the AFL eager to chip in both to be seen as a 'big player' in Sydney and because of the ownership arrangements...)

Suitability (etc) really just didn't come into it, so now, 10 years after it should have been converted into a ~60K rectangular stadium, it remains a dogs breakfast.

The proposal is $350m, the stadium wants the NSW government to fund the majority of it. Apparently NSW has $2billion to spend on a whole range of things, they have said they are going to spend on sports entertainment but Sydney football stadium and Parramatta Stadium are also wanting major upgrades and it's unlikely the government will have enough for all 3
Government should allocate tax dollars smarter than this. Eg public housing.

How much is the WA government spending on their new stadium?

Or the SA government on revamping Adelaide oval?

Mind you, in terms of numbers who will use it, they're still probably more cost effective than a lot of arts bodies and museums...

Yep, although the numbers going to Subiaco or Adelaide oval are probably stronger (certainly per capita if not outright) compared to the anemic crowds for ANZ.

Who is to say that after an upgrade/refit/etc, the numbers wont rise due to the better viewing, etc?
