Re: Number TBA - Zachary Clarke [Pick 37 - 2008 National Draft]

I guess you are not rating the number 2 raft pick, or not rating him as a ruckman. I was disappointed we did not select McKernan who I think was available at the Ballantyne selection. Clearly a player who can be very useful as a Forward which is a position we need players for in the next 3-5 years. I think our 2nd ruckman needs an additional position they can fill.
I'm not fully convinced #2 will stay in the ruck, they'll be tempted to swing him through a few key positions while Cox is still around, wouldn't be surprised if he ends up making home up forward. But it'll be good to see how he and Clarke go against each other in the ruck in the WAFL. Clarke's leap and his big tank are almost as impressive so it shouldn't be totally one sided contest, just has to avoid the body on body contests, especially while he's giving away 12kgs.

The careers of McKernan v Ballantyne, we'll see how that pans out, hope Balla is electric in front of goals and justifies his selection.

I'd love to see Sandilands take on a Salmon like role in the later part of his career. Time will tell whether he can develop the key skills to make it possible. He'd be a forward that no team could match up on. At the moment his mobility could be exploited by an attacking defender, but better marking and accurate goal kicking would mean the defender would have to stick close by.

Re: Number TBA - Zachary Clarke [Pick 37 - 2008 National Draft]

Gav McKernan isn't a genuine KPP though ... he'll have to be developed into one ... hasn't excelled in any single key position apart from ruck in his junior career (which he'll be too short for at AFL), is more style over substance (despite big reputation) and plays his own game (not for the team).

Clarke should be a well worthwhile project ruck, but he's nowhere near the best ruckman in the draft ... apart from Naitanui and Vickery, I'd have Roughead, Redden and Stanley also well ahead of him at this stage. As much as I want him to do well this year, I think he may have difficulty adjusting to the step up in physicality playing senior football this year for the first time ... will probably get roughed up and ragdolled around by the much stronger bodies until he puts some decent size on in the next few pre-seasons.

Yeah I realise MacKernan isn't a KPP, but I see him along the lines of Simmonds, useful as a forward and a mobile ruckman. I don't see the value in having two specialised ruckmen in your starting 22, especially if they don't have a decent second string to their bow. I'm definitely not suggesting that you'd base a forward line around him. I also think we need a developing genuine ruckman or two on our list in case your number 1 goes down. I think our mix isn't too bad at the moment but obviously there is a gap where Warnock would have been in terms of his stage of development.

Re: Number TBA - Zachary Clarke [Pick 37 - 2008 National Draft]

McKernan has played as a KPP, but that doesn't mean he knows how to play there. At TAC level last year (his 2nd year of TAC Cup) he played 10 games, was named in his teams best once in a team that finished 2nd last). He had a massive size, strength and athletic advantage, so that gives you an idea of what his U18 form was like.

To give you an idea of just how poor that is, Zach (in his first year of TAC footy) was named in his teams best 9 times out of 18 in a team that finished 4th. All this despite starting the year at 77kgs.

Harves has stated that the big fella will be our number 1 ruck option against the roos with Sandi and Kep being rested. Good luck Big Z.

http://www.wafootball.com.au/wafl/match-day-stats

Made his début round 2 in the East Perth league team against East Freo.

5 kicks, 6 handballs, 3 marks, 13 ruck taps and 1 inside 50

Looking at the stats it looks like he was beaten on the day but certainly not disgraced. Anybody here that was at the game that can tell us how he went?

How ironic that my buddy got drafted by the old enemy East Perth!!:(

Seriously, this guy is a gun.

Very hard working, fantastic hands.

Just needs to learn to take front spot in more ruck knocks.

But he is really really impressing me. Has bulked up a tonne. :thumbsu: Which is obviously due to his work ethic.

I'd say he would almost be ready second half of this year. :thumbsu:

Will be the best ruckman in the league in 3 years. Bookmark it.

Absolutely stoked.

You're welcome to come back here anytime.:thumbsu:

Clarke >>>>>>>>>>>>> Warnock. :thumbsu:

Let's hope he has more integrity than previous Vic metro ruckmen with bag loads of potential.

This one would get at least a round one selection if he did go home. Only home sickness will see him leave, he's not a lazy and greedy like Warnock was. At least there's a career for him during and after Sandilands due to his marking abilities up forward and his youth. If he gets on well and makes friends with the other players, he'll stay. IIRC Simmonds, Warnock and White all kept to themselves and didn't make a lot of friends here.

Just watching a tape of the Claremont game Big Zac is the bomb.

Anyway Zac is the biz. If we get pumped today bring in Zac, Pearce (upgrade for Bucovaz LTI) DeBoer, Walters, Campbell. Bring em all in!

Brilliant stuff TBU, Zach looks to be a pretty good prospect ;)

Theres plenty to work with for Zach, good signs.

Only looked at half of that, but geez, he looks good...Nicely co-ordinated and knows how to position and where to hit the ball.

Not bad for a bloke who's only played footy for a year.

You can really see his basketball background when you watch him play, has a hell of a leap and good ball skills.

Thanks guys, think I'll have one of the easier buddy jobs if he keeps this up.;)

like how in the new dockers magazine he's talking about years 3 and 4 etc in his Dockers development. He seems more balanced & settled that Warnock

He's also living with Sandilands mum and dad
