I should have been more specific when i said as opposed to outright results. Only winning matters... of course! You'd be surprised at how naturally results-driven a bunch of eight year old kids are. Winning isn't one of the things which need to be drummed in. The focus from the clubs' perspective is on the kids' development, social skills within a team environment i.e. learning to be a team player as opposed to playing like a millionaire hungo/leading to space so the player with the ball wants to pass it off to someone in a better position/being supportive of a player who makes a mistake and the general enjoyment and wellbeing of the kids.

Our club strives to ensure the kids are good sports individually, play fairly and respect and value their teammates. The last thing we want is to have a bunch of self-serving egotistical teenage boys who only play for themselves, want individual glory only and who are not supportive of their teamamtes when they make mistakes. Humility and graciousness are the other important aspects, and so while winning is the most important end result for a team, final margins are usually not encouraged to be emphasised. Instead, values like unselfish pieces of play by an individual apeared to be constantly reinforced by the coach yesterday, with the emphasis on the importance of a team first ethos.

I'm not sure what you mean when you ask how are the teams picked?. The best way I can answer is that in the under 9s there's two teams, Tigers black and Tigers yellow. There's enough kids in each side that they all just about get one quarter on the bench and three quarters on the field. Under 11s and in every age bracket as you move higher up, the participation numbers tend to drop slightly. Under 11s still retain the two sides, as does the under 13s. By under 13s, the numbers become low enougn that as such, it can often be difficult to get the numbers to field two sides. In that case, some of the bigger/older/better skilled kids from the age bracket below get an opportunity to step up and play in the older group to make up the numbers.

By under 15s, there's only one side as the numbers significantly drop off. The cream of the crop take their footy seriously, while many teens without the talent/dedication tend to drop out. By under 15s, the side takes winning very seriously and only the best 22 get picked. If kids aren't good enough at that point, it really is a case of too bad, unfortunately. While they may get a token game, quarter or whatever, they are generally gap fillers that make up the numbers. If you prove yourself at junor level, the chances of retaining your position in the 22 and cementing a permanent position increase significantly.

With the tackling, it's pretty much touch football. The kids have to block, corral, smother etc. while generally putting on as much pressure as possible. You can tell that some of the kids really, really struggled with that aspect of the game. One kid actually had a brain fade on our side and tackled the oposition kid and was paid a free kick against. Generally though, from what I could tell, it was up to the umpire to tell the kid to "get rid of it now" when they were under pressure but still trying to barge their way through.
Thanks SC - that's incredible! I love the way they approach training the kids. Sounds like a fantastic organisation! Thanks for taking the time to explain the kids' footy to me SC, I'm very impressed. Not tackling is actually a terrific way to teach other important skills! Are there any girls playing in the under 9's? It's so well organised + I love their holistic approach to developing the whole person + engendering skills that will give the kids great ability later on in life! It's obviously the way to go. Thanks again SC, I'm excited about it.

I certainly will. The lady said that it was one "one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard". I wish I was there to hear it. She's redeemed herself from locking the cat in the walk-in. :)
It is one of the most beautiful things I've heard too! It's just so wonderful that you + your wife are instilling such wonderful values into your children. As for the cat in the closet incident, she really was only doing what she thought was right, just a pity the cat pooped on the carpet :( It would have been far worse if she'd hit the cat, but she proved that she has learned about right + wrong. It's kind of cute upon reflection, just not for the poor cat lol

Hey everyone, are we still friends ? Shall I be allowed to post in here later, or / and will I want to ?;)
Hey chuggi, of course you are welcome! Congratulations + you were the much better team yesterday :thumbsu:

Girls can play up till U-12s in our comp. There are a few girls teams around which are older- not too common but more than 10 years ago.

He's run away- gone AWOL. How can there be any hanky-panky?
Poor hubby is probably terrified of you after a defeat :p We're just not used to losing, so it's way worse for us when we do :(

Random?
Is there something I missed?

Edit- sorry. The pic didn't download, though I waited for a couple of minutes. Got it now :)

Very cute!! Lol
Two dogs are eager to get going, one cheeky dog just slips you the wink before they get moving :)
I wonder if they're tied in?
Yesterday I saw and old couple driving along a main road with a little yip yap dog sitting in the front between them.
I wondered if they realised how little an amount of mince meat he'd make, if the old feller slammed his foot down hard on the brake? Maybe they shoulda got a bigger dog if that's what they're after :)

Yeah- just loving the weather. Need to get outside and do some gardening while it's this good. The laundry can wait, don't you agree? ;)
Good to hear you didn't lose too much last night- were you at the casino?

Well depends. I said that a few weekends in a row and end up running out of socks and undies ;)

Played at a friends house. Would never play at the cas and make rich people richer. Was going to be a $100 lost but managed to claw back to $10 only.

Lol- time to buy more socks and undies! (I don't mind doing the washing so much, it's what to do with all the clothes afterwards that I hate! :()
And lol :) Could easily have been a $200 loss. Try playing with matchsticks next time, hey? ;)
